Picard does an amazing job of giving Patrick Stewart the same kind of latitude to explore the character and make the same powerful Picard-esque soliloquies and speeches TNG fans came to love as part of his character.
Becoming involved with Dahj immediately ignites a flame within Picard that very quickly re-ignites the spark we have all come to know and love from the good captain. Based upon what we have already seen it is quite clear that this story, is going to take Picard to places he, in his solitude; and us as fans could never have expected - and I look forward to seeing the rest of it!!!!

Love this first episode. One of the best first episodes for Trek ever. Setup a great story that I am excited to see what happens next. Great acting and story. Watching this episode brings back great feelings watching Star Trek when I was younger.

I just re watched the first episodes of TNG and if that´s our point of comparison than Picard first episode did just fine. Actually it's better in many ways. In Picard we see a Star Trek for the times we live in. TNG was about optimism. Utopia. It´s the 90's in the end of the Cold War with the fall of the Berlin Wall. But you know what? No one explained to us how to reach that Utopia. Now we have new challenges to face and a generation that seems to be repeating the mistakes of the past. Perhaps this is why Patrick Steward decided to return as Picard. We see a character that realizes he can´t just let injustice go by. He can't just sit still in retirement while a new generation faces such major issues. I can see the potential in Picard. I can see how it can become a though provoking series. And hopefully, much like TNG influence a new generation.

It's excellent! This is exactly the direction Star Trek needs to go. Star Trek has always been written to reflect real life issues. Just like in real life, they'll be dark periods where wars and conflicts, both internal and external, are taking place, which are unavoidable even in a semi-utopian society.

One episode in and I can already tell it's building into something great. The callbacks to the previous series' and movies are cleverly interspersed into the new narrative. The perfect continuation of the Star Trek timeline. We've already seen Picard's dismay with some Federation ideals in Insurrection. Coupled with the tragedies in Nemesis equate to a story that's exactly where it needs to be in a post-Dominion war, post-Hobus supernova Federation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was concerned that the series wouldn't give us a good reason to really *care* about the new characters. But from the first episode it seems that they've taken the time to build up their backgrounds and in a way that makes you emotionally invested in them pretty quickly. They've also taken the time to craft the context to explain why Picard is in the position he is and how he ended up there. I don't think the direction Star Fleet took is something uncharacteristic, especially considering how we saw a definite authoritarian streak during the Dominion War, and we've also seen Star Fleet officers collaborate with Klingons to start a war. There has always been a tendency, usually curbed, to act out of fear. It also makes sense that Picard would never go along what Star Fleet decided to do. We know that Star Fleet doesn't really have that cozy a relationship with synthetic life forms given how they've treated Data, Lal, and the EMH. All in all, a great start to the show and very much in keeping with canon. Expand

Hard to review an entire season after only seeing one episode, but I will be honest, Episode 1 of this show absolutely impressed me. Stewart is spot on, the show's pacing is just right, and the music was surprisingly emotional to hear. This thing is starting off right, and I couldn't be happier.

Seeing him have to work from a position of relative powerlessness given his current station in life without the might and resources of the Federation Starfleet behind him in no way diminishes the character or what he's doing. Assembling a hodgepodge crew of former associates, new friends, and questionable contacts. If anything it's an interesting twist on the Star Trek formula to see one of its characters in anything but their prime in a position of authority on a powerful Federation starship or space station but rather essentially an elderly civilian. It makes Picard's determination to stay true to the man who helmed the Enterprise D and E that much more endearing to watch. I for one can't wait to see where they take us the latter part of this first season and into season 2. Expand

"7.4" user score, really? Where are the good reviws you lazy bums?!
Great casting job. Picard is the man, interesting story, made me anxious to see the next episode, extra points for the cool Borg cube, no 20min klingon bable or something as annoying as an overopinionated skinny b with a male name... It was refreshing to watch it. I'm no fan of the OS Star Trek, but I rememer myself crying as a kid in the 90's when I saw the intro for the TNG alone.
The acting was AMAZING. I would have been satisfied with half the job they did on the episode.
Dahj's early demise was a bit of a rip off on The Last of Us's intro scene for the quick emotional attachment, but who cares.
The new synth/AI dynamic will be interesting to see unfold...
Anyway, hope the creators of the series and its financial backers are as commited to this awesome thing as it deserves. Hope there will be a lot of seasons, because when it comes to Star Trek (TNG, Voyager, Deep Space Nine), the later seasons got a lot better than the first 3-4 ...Patrick Stewart included or not, the guy can't live forever unfortunatley...
Just go for broke, please don't make the mistake of over pu**ying the f thing, or make it about a gay romace - there are special sites where we watch that BS... I hope they go a little old school with it also, done wonders for The Mandalorian.
Anyway, my faith in human kind is now restored and 10 out of 10!

To those who loathe STD this will be a bitter pill to swallow, but this is Star Trek, post TNG era built on the STD chassis. Like a refit of our beloved flagship. It is an amalgam of the two entities.

It hits so many elements drawn from TNG-NEM era, mostly through single lines of dialog or visual cues. While having the overly shiny and glossy look of STD. Essentially proving the theory that STDs visuals should have always been set post NEM era.

It also comes with those inherent flaws in that chassis structural integrity. It is too violent. People are going to scream the same things they have been screaming since STD started. "GENE'S VISION" There is entirely too much physical hand to hand combat in a world filled with phasers.

However the reality is like it or not Gene's vision died with him. Trek was not following his vision even when he was alive and TNG was very much at the core of that deviation. So in that regard you simply cannot condemn this series because it does not comply to something even TNG did not fully comply to. You have to accept that this generation of Trek is going to be different, or there will be no trek. You simply cannot go home again, no matter how much you want and that is actually one of the emerging themes this show is setting up to explore.

Now with that said if you can accept the shows aesthetics and story telling what you have with Picard is something that is bending over backwards trying to please the fans. Even if it still makes some mistakes, what you have with this show is something that is doing its best to be faithful while contemporizing the franchise which was a major reason the series puttered out and struggled after DS9. Having errors in the continuity has always been a part of the franchises DNA. With what was seen in Picard there are very few of them, but some are present and they are pretty small and mostly inconsequential.

However, more importantly if you can accept this generation of Trek what you get is a show that is setting itself up to be a more human driven drama. Something that is going to be much closer to DS9 than it is TOS and honestly that is not a bad thing at all. Highly serialized with so far a tightly woven story that is weaving itself and producing an engrossing show.

I judge the quality of a show based on how many times I pause it and for what reasons. The times I did stop it was to cross verify information to make sure it was right. However even that was limited because the story itself was compelling. Despite a bit of a slow start the characters, settings and scenarios are drawing you in making you want to know more. Which is exactly what this sort of show should be doing. I did not once stop to check DMs, see if something else was happening or other wise get distracted. The show did an excellent job at holding my ADD addled attention.

As for its visuals, they are all as sharp as any of the STD visuals. This time they got the CGI much more accurate, albeit a bit too clean as seen with the almost chromed out D at the intro that looks too perfect. As do the recreations of D interiors like 10 Forward that look like newer, shinier, more perfect replicas of the original. There is an built in explanation for it and it does make perfect sense within the narrative framework. So the visuals look wonderful, albeit not quite as Trek as we are all used to or would prefer.

The first episode was as good as I could have possibly hoped for. However I am also one who is not going to rail on STD simply because of the mistakes of the past. Ultimately this generation is starting to hit its stride with its production and story telling. Sort of the same way the first two seasons of TNG are almost unwatchable but things quickly began turning round in Season 3.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is Picard Trek? In every sense it is definitely doing all it can to pay tribute and hold true to the TNG roots. It may have its warts but this first episode shows something that IS good and WILL only get better. So judging it just on its own its definitely the best Trek we have seen since the last time Jean Luc was still in service and you owe it to yourself to give it a chance and let it grow.

Precisely what it needs and intends to be. I like the fragility and wisdom of Picard and the subtle use of technology in realising the world. I hope it focuses on intellectual and moral issues instead of simple action sequences moving forward. That was always Star Trek's real strength.

This is a massive step forward for Star Trek. Once a show that was devoted to the episodic format, now taking it's time to explore things in a serious, complex way. The sole problem I've had with it so far is the reliance on the Mysterious Badass Waif trope. Yes, we had it with Firefly, and Logan, and bunches of other things, but I'm enjoying every other part of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is like a cool breeze hitting ones face on a hot day. I’ve seen the first two episodes now and I’m quite pleased. Some character returns over play nostalgia, this doesn’t. It seems to have its own reason for being. I gave 9 stars not 10 as there’s room to grow. I don’t require an almost 80 year old actor to run around. I’m good with the pace thus far. I just finished the Mandalorian so I’m fine with slow progression. (This is a minor spoiler, hence the tag.) I’m a little tired with the idea that the (an) antagonist is part of star fleet. That was the plot of how many of the last Star Trek movies? I’d like to think Star Fleet and the Federation is a bit more competent. A minor problem with episode one, it should have been more clear that it wasn’t Romulan blood that burned the weapon but acid or something. Quibbling issues, not enough to detract from the show. (though i would highly recommend you read the comic "picard countdown" if you are curious as to what has happened)

Without going into spoiler territory, a new journey has fallen into picards lap that he can not let go of, no matter his age or how stupid it may seem to everyone else.

The show stays strong through episode 1,2 and even 3, but then begins to slow down story wise around episode 4, until you reach the final 5 minutes of it.

star trek has never been about constant battles and action, diplomacy and cander comes into the shows too, which picard definitely has buckets of, with the cast being fantastic as expected, even the new ones.

The show for me personally, is much better than discovery ever was, this though as i say is a personal point of view.

i hold this view purely due to discovery's first season only focusing on 1 character, which was never a star trek thing to do. Beyond the fact this is show is entitled "star trek picard" the show is about all the characters and the development as a crew or the background to each, which discovery lacked heavily.

GIve picard a watch i would say, but maybe don't watch it week by week if you think you are going to get hooked or you'll need to wait patiently.

Intelligent storytelling with strong performances throughout. Picard is thought provoking whilst at the same time uncompromising with it’s stunning visual effects. It’s more dialog based than action, therefore very mature. However, when the action comes along it’s worth the wait. A real treat to see the return of some old familiar faces.

Picard’s lack of faith in the institution he once looked to for guidance is a very 2020 mood. It’s not the show’s subtlest play, but it is classic Trek. For the most part, Picard is strongest when it is trying on other genre trappings—like the mystery element, which feels partially imported from Chabon’s best-selling novel The Yiddish Policemen's Union, or the unwitting-synthetics-in-disguise element, which could be Blade Runner, Terminator, or Battlestar Galactica (take your pick). ... [Sir Patrick Stewart] is in fine fettle at the helm of a new crew.
  3. The show seeks to pull together notions of mythology, personal lore, and futuristic considerations of very modern problems, but often trips over itself in the process. But every time Picard was starting to lose me, there would be a spark of interest across the screen — a line, a gesture, a moment — that felt piercing and true.
