Pluses are the underlying story, which is interesting. The space travel effects are good. Impressive location for the first few episodes. Michelle Yeoh is still in it and the lead has new hair and is sexier. Negs are poor special effects for extraterrestrial worlds, bar the first one , the lack of Pike and the new trans non binary line, which is excessively soppy and mawkish. The feelz component is very now, it's like air kissing, everyone does it. Nobody means it. STD is still watchable Sci Fi though. Expand

The second season was certainly the best of the three so far. Pike was a strong lead, and were the stakes, if rather convoluted. S3 has been the Burnham show, with her screaming, laughing and crying at every opportunity. The crew has become grey and lifeless, with only Philippa Georgiou and Commander Reno showing anything close to spunk.

The setting is interesting, but the story and characters are deathly dull. Think to DS9, Voyager, B5, BSG etc. They all had call out characters with a complex backstory. Discovery is as lifeless as the future it is showing us.

Discovery is a show given to histrionics, but stripped of its familiar setting, it now reaches for profundity with a little more assurance.

The series settles into the chaos of the 32nd century after the second episode, when we see what happened to Discovery and its crew and witness Burnham adapt to the survivalist spirit of this new age.
