A near total disregard for continuity, where the writers/director/showrunner cannot understand that a destination only one light year away takes about 1 second at max. warp, is never going to please those weaned on Star Trek. CBS is committed, so here is hoping season two sees significant improvements.

Congratulations. Even if you don't delve into this with a political mind, this is by far the most disappointing inclusion into the Star Trek franchise. While visually stunning (because money), the series lacks any of the heart or resemblance to the franchise's previous entries. My advice, go watch The Orville if you want to see a true Star Trek heir.

As a Trek fan, I'm quite disappointed in the way the first episode went. Maybe that is me but there is so many things wrong with the characters. If you are a gate-keeping Star Trek fan, there's no doubt you'll hate this show because it's not the same exact show that you grew up with.

That said, that's what makes this show so brilliant. Too many Star Trek reboots have tried to play on ToS or TNG success and created cookie-cutter series with almost identical plot lines and characters. Thank GOD Discovery changed the way it did.

While some of the pseudo-science sounds hokey, in the larger Star Trek canon, it's really not that bad.

The characters are deep, flawed, vulnerable, well-developed, and evolve throughout the series. The writing is incredible, and every time you think you've got one up on the writers and that they might be going in a predictable route, they turn the entire thing on its head and disrupt your expectations entirely!

The show doesn't shy away from its dark plots, but it also doesn't paint a dreary depressing galaxy like many of the semi-recent sci-fi successes (i.e. Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis). Hope and adventure are always right around the corner and every episode you're left at the edge of your seat eagerly waiting to find out what happens next.

Again, if what you like is the shallow, feel-good, low energy writing of past Star Trek series, you're going to hate this. If you hate the fact that the only straight white male character on this show is essentially a side character even though he's the captain because you HATE representation and diversity, you will hate this show (and you're a piece of crap human being). If you feel like no one has any right to EVER change or update any media from your childhood memories (OMG MAH KLINGONS!) you'll hate this show. But if you're actually open to what is a BRILLIANTLY written show with amazing characters, writing, and acting, you will NOT be disappointed. This is one of the best sci-fi shows out there right now, right along with The Expanse.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly don't know how they could have messed up this show any worse and I am heart broken about it. I watch Star Trek when I've had a bad day and need to chill. This isn't Star Trek. It's the Michael Burnham super hero hour. Michael knows everything and can solve everything. She is Wesley Crusher to the 10th power. She's even much smarter than Spock. She is the most unlikable, uninteresting hero I've ever seen. I know nothing about the rest of the crew. I barely know their names. It's all Michael all the time. . She mutinies against her captain, causes a war, gets a bunch of people killed, is raised a Vulcan but cannot control her emotions and at the end of the day she comes out smelling like a rose? Also everyone is madly in love with her or interested in her. Why are they pushing this so hard? It doesn't work! I don't blame the actress I blame the writers.

Klingons are not blue or clear. There are so many races they had to work with. There are races on Stark Trek that were only shown once over the years and never again. These stories on TNG, DS9 and Voyager were so compelling and profound. I wondered why they were never mentioned again. They could have easily picked up one of them and continued with their story. Why did they have to mess up the Klingons?

I don't think this show can be saved. This show should cease immediately. They should act like it's the Wolverine Origins movie or the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie. It never happened. Forget about it. Make a new story with new actors and new characters. Here's an idea. Let's go FORWARD in the story. No more prequels for a long time. Please stop with the identify politics. No one wants to be preached at. As a woman I can say I love Captain Janeway, Dr. Crusher, Officer Uhura, Kira Nerys, 7 of 9 and Guinan. Jazdea Dax is my favorite character in all of Star Trek. Please get rid of the Michael Bernham show and review your prior successful female characters going forward.

Nevertheless, I want to see more, I'm willing to give a show some time to gain it's footing. But CBS please don't put this behind a pay wall. Just make the paywall early access. If it is really Star Trek, and has a real message for humanity, Gene Roddenberry would want it to be over the airwaves.

Rainne Wison was funny and interesting in his role - perfect casting. Also perfect casting is Jason Isaacs as Lorca - completely believable as an experienced, embattled maverick with exceptional leadership skills, dispassionate resolve and cunning, and a moral compass that is a little in the grey area.

The Ash Tyler character is well-acted and well written, but for some reason I'm not buying the chemistry between Ash and Michael yet.

Sonequa Martin Green does an excellent job as Michael, oscillating between heartfelt emotions and Vulcan reserve. Remember that she hasn't rejected her humanity, and isn't half Vulcan like Spock. She's fully human with all that entails, but can be remarkably focused and calm in a crisis. She has a snappy mathematics ability and has above average combat prowess - evidenced by the fact that she can take down a Klingon who is twice her weight. But she's not a Vulcan and doesn't need to eschew emotion.

I actually really love her character. She seems like a genuine person and her emotions feel very real to me. Excellent acting. Ash just isn't swashbuckling enough, or stable enough, for me to believe she'd take an interest in him. And I think it's unlikely she'd kiss him with that greasy, scraggly beard.

Tilly's character is okay. She's quirky and irritatingly upbeat, but she is growing on me. I think her character has potential. She's sort of a Neelix-like character - upbeat, optimistic, overly talkative, and more savvy than she appears.

I don't like Lt. Saru partially because he's sniveling and irritating, but mostly due to the fact that he's hard to look at. Those tendrals on the back of his skull that pop up and writhe  like little worms when he senses danger actually make me cringe with revulsion.

I don't like the homosexual couple at all. One is a mean albino and the other is a flat-acting Prince clone with a distracting overbite; but that isn't why I don't like them. I don't like them because their relationship is a propaganda move that was presented to and approved by GLAAD ("a media monitoring organization founded by LGBT people") .

There has been a systematic and aggressive campaign to pressure production companies to represent the tiny contemporary subculture in numerous, positive, substantive, prolonged, central roles in the media - particularly aimed at markets for families and children, with the central aim of mainstream normalization. I'm not a supporter of propaganda in any form, but I really don't like the idea of special interest groups pressuring production companies, especially when massive overrepresentation is taking place already.

The matching red pajamas, brushing teeth scene caused me to stop watching for weeks. When I gave the show another shot due to the memorable acting of Sonequa Martin Green, I stopped watching entirely at the homosexual kissing scene. I found it to be contrived to the degree that I utterly lost my suspension of disbelief. All I saw was aggressive special interest activism intruding upon a beloved television franchise.

In typical militant fashion, Wilson Cruz, the overbite doctor, said "We aren't here for [the fan's and viewer's] comfort" and essentially said, if you don't like it, don't watch the show. That's not very business-like, but it may prove to be prophetic if the 200 Metacritic negative  user reviews to 100 positive reviews is any indication of the show's longevity - or the nation's polarization over the issue.

My suspicion is that the primary fan base just wants to watch the show with their family without any f-bombs or ham-fisted propaganda. I suppose they may need to decide if they want to make a show fans enjoy (and buy) or bow subserviently to the watchful diligence of the GLAAD Gestapo.

I probably won't watch Season 2 despite the many great performances, interesting storylines and good special effects. Great disappointment from an avid Star Trek fan who has seen every movie and every episode in each incarnation of the franchise.

Aside from that the acting, special effects, VFX, costumes, sound design, music, direction are all incredible. The writing takes a noticeable and dramatic climb in quality at the end of the first half of the season, and continues into some truly epic and must see sci-fi in the second half. Its format and pace are very different from past versions of Trek--I have mostly enjoyed the different series but I wouldn't qualify as a Trekkie. However, after about the 3rd episode of Discovery, I can't wait for the following week's episode. The last couple of episodes have left me at the edge of my chair counting down the days until the next installment. I wouldn't have said Bravo in months, but, I will now. Take it or leave it. Let’s face it most plot points, set pieces etc etc are pretty much interchangeable within a genre. My point is that if the producers had let the creative team actually come up with their own premises, ideas and characters instead of relentlessly rehashing old ideas then a new and exciting franchise could have been born. Or crashed, burned and fizzled our after one season but you know what? That’s the nature of the beast. That’s what keeps people interested. While I definitely didn’t hate Star Trek discovery personally, I can understand why people feel let down. I honestly think that if the exact same team that made STD (wow unfortunate acronym) had made a new, original sci-fi series it would have been great. This is a different Star Trek because this is a different decade than when the others aired. The way we tell stories now is entirely different than how we told stories in the early aughts, 90s and 60s.

    Some common critiques:
The Klingons looks different - yup, they also didn't have any prosthetics in TOS
The technology looks too advanced for it to take place before TOS - I really don't want to watch actors push radio shack buttons glued onto cardboard in a show produced this side of of the millennium.
Not everyone is an altruistic blowhard, Gene Roddenberry would not approve! - meh, the main character is annoyingly moral and so is the first Captain we encounter.
It's too politically charged- have you watched any Star Trek, ever? People lost their **** over Dax having the first broadcast "lesbian" kiss, or how about a black bridge officer, let alone a woman Captain. The show has always pushed progressive politics in one way or another, and there's always been someone to object and fold their arms saying "that just ain't right"

Some genuine criticism are things like:
Too much or inconsistent camera movement
Some characters can be annoying at times (true of any show)

Plus, Tilly is amazing and everyone should watch it for that reason alone.

My husband and I very much looked forward to this new series and we really wanted to like it. So we tried to focus on the positive sides, like some of the interesting characters. But After 7 episodes we must conclude that it is a big disappointment.

The storylines are very bad. The technology is inconsistent with all the previous shows. The speed of the episodes is tiring. It is too dark and violent: countless tortures and killings in each episode. The Klingons are no Klingons in both appearance and behaviour. Klingons are honourable warriors, but in this series they resemble underhand Cardassians. Very disappointing. I hate the unfriendly sarcasm in the dialogues. This doesn't fit with the harmonious integrity among the crew of Star Trek ships, which is one of the things why I am a fan.

I keep watching because I hope that it will improve. I would love to enjoy a good new Star Trek series with intelligent stories about interesting ethical problems, in the ideal world of the Federation. That is what we like about Star Trek and that is what's missing in this series.

    --addition--
It gets much better after episode 7. Therefore I changed my score from 4 to 6. I recommend to skip the first seven episodes. In episodes 8 and 9 it finally starts feeling more like Star Trek again. It's still badly written, each episode still has actions that don't make any sense, we still miss depth in the stories, we miss Federation ethics, and the inconsistent technology and weird Klingons remain a shame. But we did enjoy these last two episodes better. We absolutely love main character Michael, she is great. Saru as well. And Tilly and other characters are growing on me. I have good hopes that it will keep improving.

To the writers, director and producers of the show, please listen to the criticisms! Please involve Trekkies with the writing!

Ethical dilemmas and a clash between cultures and traditions comprise the fore of the narrative, but the hours don’t skimp on phaser blasts and broadcast-appropriate carnage.
