As a long time Star Trek fan I came with an open mind. Unfortunately this show is really stupid so far.

An uncontrollable starfleet first officer that acts like an emo teenager (she is supposed to have been brought up by Vulcans, lol) looks completely out of place. Kilngons are super annoying with their long-winded caveman speeches. Star Trek was always more on the philosophical

I didn't like it to begin with but it has grown on me.

People's expectations are high because it's Star Trek but surely they won't make it a s bad as 'Enterprise' and I'm hoping it will continue to improve and be around for quite a few seasons

Just as I thought. The Orville is more Star Trek than this. But... I really enjoyed it. I watched it on Dutch Netflix and I was VERY disappointed when I found out I had to wait another week for a new episode.

The most intriguing Star Trek series since Voyager. At first it feels a bit like a fan film, but the production value is much higher and there's a lot of depth here that I didn't expect. Yeah, the Klingons look strange, but overall this is definitely a show to keep your eye on.

This is exactly what the Star Trek franchise needs. Willing to let go of the TNG era, and move into modern television. Wonderfully acted, gripping story so far, and already hinting at addressing modern issues like culture vs race, I believe this will be the first show to out do The Next Generation.

Star Trek Discovery is the Sci-fi we've all been waiting for since Enterprise. Many of times, tv shows will come on trying to innovate the idea of adventure, exploration, drama, and discovery, but they often times fail at meeting what the average users want. Disicovery not only meets those innovations, but exceeds it greatly.

The 2 episode premiere was better produced than all Star Trek television series aside from the Original (which is impossible to beat due to it's legacy), and Star Trek TNG, which doesn't really get going til Season 3, and is philosophically brilliant + features Patrick Stewart, who like the Original, is hard to beat.

I will say, this show takes a little bit out of every Star Trek iteration that has been released so far. First, this show takes place 10 years before the original Star Trek series. Like Enterprise, it just seems too advanced for that timeline; however, who is going to watch a series that looks like its from the 1960's? However, I liken it to the J.J. Abram's iterations of Star Trek. This show basically feels like a TV show form of those movies. This form of storytelling also reminds me fondly of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which ditches optimism for a grittier story.
This show, however, is unlike any other Star Trek before it. It takes from the same type of story telling as we've seen in shows like Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black, using dramatic storytelling and flashback scenes.
My advice...do the CBS All Access free trial. If you have a Roku or PS4, you can download CBS All Access for free. Watch the first two episodes. This is one of those shows that every Star Trek fan has to watch, and they will either like it (as I do), or they won't. I'm willing to accept that it's different from the other shows and give it a shot. Will you?

I'm excited to see Episode 3 next week.

And if you're a Trek fan:

(Very slight info ahead, but nothing I'd call a 'spoiler.' Still, if you're sensitive, watch the episode before reading.)

This is the first time I've found the Klingons to be interesting. They've got an actual back-story and culture presented, rather than just being a mindless, battle-obsessed biker gang in space. (This is an old beef of mine, and I'm glad they're already addressing it.)

The Vulcan-raised crew member is interesting. She's like the opposite of Spock. You sometimes saw glimpses of emotion through his wall of logic. With Michael, logic serves to rein in her emotions during stressful moments as she remembers her Vulcan training, and you see it in her face and mannerisms here.

The ship and settings are great. They're JJ-verse inspired, and I'm alright with that. We can't have another TOS-looking ship in 2017. This looks like the future of our time, just like TOS did for the 60s.

Overall, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes. Most Trek series start out a bit weak and build from there. I want to see this series grow to become one of the best in this historic franchise. And so far, I'm optimistic about its chances!

As a fan of the original series and an avid consumer of every TV series and movie since, I was afraid the series would be hi-jacked by producers and writers who valued Brand over Lore. I'm excited to report the show included a constant stream of excellent fan service with subtle historical details that are accurate for the time and place that the story takes place. For example, there is a point where the Klingon leader disgustingly references both Tellarites and Andorans (2 of the first 4 members of the Federation) even though none appear in the episode. ST:D (yes its an unfortunate abbreviation) has clearly been crafted by Star Trek fans with loving attention to the details of the source material..

The most impressive part of the first 2 episodes in my opinion is the focus on creating a truly compelling culture for the Klingons that explains their xenophobic aggression towards other races. No longer are they simply 2 dimensional, evil props to be used as a foil to the Federations ethical and moral codes. We see glmpses of a fascinating racial history that provides logical context for their behavior and why the Federation failed so badly in early attempts to understand Klingons and how this inevitably led to conflict.

For the first time in years, I'm excited to see what comes next in a Star Trek series. CBS looks to have a huge hit on their hands if they keep up this level of quality throughout the show run.

I'm gonna start out on a bit of a rant. Kurtzman, Orci and Abrams need to quit smashing all over Roddenberry's legacy. It is disrespectful for one of my childhood idols. I hope Patrick Stewart sues paramount for that. Furthermore, we don't need to hear the classical Star Trek theme song at the conclusion of the first season. We got enough of that in the reboot films which is another prime example of smashing all over a legacy that started with Gene Roddenberry.
Now there were some elements that were brought back for this new show that I felt played in very well. Let's start with Ambassador Sarek played by James Frain. I really like the continuation of this character and I could almost argue that Sarek is as big as his son, Spock in the ST universe and deserves his own show. I was particularly impressed with the episode where Sarek is stranded in a nebula and his adoptive daughter, Michael of whom he shares a Katra with is trying to reach him and the story was executed beautifully as we got to get a little more of an origin story between the two characters.
The second thing is the Mirror Universe. I love the Mirror Universe and you can never go wrong I guess and what they did was make Lorca, the Mirror Lorca that is in a cool in unique storyline with lots of effect and action and fighting. I enjoyed it. But, let's not forget that DS9 smashed all over this storyline in their series and so at this point, I think it is fair to ask "why are they still using this one?" I'm just grateful they didn't drag it out too long.
What really sells this series for me is the character Michael Burnham played by Sonequa Martin-Green. She is a human femaie that has learned to repress her emotions. In a lot of ways, she reminds me of Seven of Nine from the Voyager series of who I am a huge fan of. Like Seven, Michael is trying to rediscover her humanity in the series. But, Kurtzman needs to be careful. I think towards the end of season 1 , I didn't recognize her anymore. They developed her character too fast.
Tone it Down and Slow it Down when season 2 comes around. This is the sixth series in the Star Trek franchise. You aren't going to get a pass for just doing Star Trek anymore. I want to see innovation. I want to see more Michael and more Sarek and stay away from Jean-Luc Picard anecdotes.
Because of the amount of negatives, I settled on a solid 7. I'm intrigued enough to see season 2 because they did do some things properly.

UPDATE: 11/14/17 - A general rule of television is to never review a tv series until it has found its footing. This usually happened after the production and acting teams have worked together through at least 6 episodes. STD has reached that point and has made an astonishing turnaround. The last few episode of the first half season has returned to what made TOS so good - a compelling plot and great character development. Too bad the series did not start with episode 4 instead of the abysmal first three episodes. STD has become a series worth your time. It is still too bad that CBS has placed it behind a paywall.

I loved this first season, and as a long time, Trekkie have to admit I haven't enjoyed a version of this world so much since The Next Generation. Plotlines were dramatic and well thought out and the main characters particularly well developed. Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham is terrific and skilfully portrays a strong, intelligent if somewhat vulnerable woman, guilt-ridden from a poor decision which destroyed her promising career. The cast, on the whole, is very watchable as an ensemble with some great scenes from Jason Issacs and Anthony Rapp. Shazad Latif is particularly charming as Burnham's unpredictable love interest, and Michelle Yeoh is just brilliant as her mentor. I would have loved a more substantial role for Yeoh; it was great casting to have her as a Captain and one of the main reasons I wanted to see the show.

The VFX are excellent, and clearly, a large budget was allocated to produce some quality work. It certainly paid off and transported us to many different and exciting locations throughout each episode.

I do not doubt that a lot of die-hard fans will find fault with this incarnation, it can never be the original or TNG, but it doesn't have to be. It can certainly stand on its own while paying tribute to the trek legacy. I hope season 2 will be as engaging.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just can't understand all the negative reviews for STD.

I had extremely low expectations after a string of clones of the fantastic Start Trek the Next Generation. I was preparing for yet more sanctimonious 2D characters, badly acted and rehashing tired old story-lines. But STD has taking it in an entirely new direction, adding richness to the Klingons, and showing that The Federation isn't always squeaky clean.

Rather than being all nauseatingly perfect, the cast of STD have as many characters flaws as they have talents. The exposition is done well without being a series of explainers, and the characters all feel rich and well developed as a result.

I can't understand the complaint that Star Trek should be about exploration only. They go to another fricking universe! The plot twists are clever enough to actually catch you off your guard, and they sitll find time to add a sense of wonder to what's happening.

The acting is just superb and I really don't understand the complaints about the acting as it is top notch. There is a great sense of humour attached, and plenty of scenes that bring about real sense of emotion.

Star Trek badly needed a new sense of direction, and STD has provided much needed vigour and charm. The sci-fi is credible and believable, drawing on current theories (like the multiverse theory), but finding interesting ways to project it. It can be surreal at times, intriguing, raunchy, heat-breaking, and elating.

I really don't understand the haters.

If you are a gate-keeping Star Trek fan, there's no doubt you'll hate this show because it's not the same exact show that you grew up with.

That said, that's what makes this show so brilliant. Too many Star Trek reboots have tried to play on ToS or TNG success and created cookie-cutter series with almost identical plot lines and characters. Thank GOD Discovery changed the way it did.

While some of the pseudo-science sounds hokey, in the larger Star Trek canon, it's really not that bad.

The characters are deep, flawed, vulnerable, well-developed, and evolve throughout the series. The writing is incredible, and every time you think you've got one up on the writers and that they might be going in a predictable route, they turn the entire thing on its head and disrupt your expectations entirely!

The show doesn't shy away from its dark plots, but it also doesn't paint a dreary depressing galaxy like many of the semi-recent sci-fi successes (i.e. Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis). Hope and adventure are always right around the corner and every episode you're left at the edge of your seat eagerly waiting to find out what happens next.

Again, if what you like is the shallow, feel-good, low energy writing of past Star Trek series, you're going to hate this. If you hate the fact that the only straight white male character on this show is essentially a side character even though he's the captain because you HATE representation and diversity, you will hate this show (and you're a piece of crap human being). If you feel like no one has any right to EVER change or update any media from your childhood memories (OMG MAH KLINGONS!) you'll hate this show. But if you're actually open to what is a BRILLIANTLY written show with amazing characters, writing, and acting, you will NOT be disappointed. This is one of the best sci-fi shows out there right now, right along with The Expanse.

Strong performances by the leads a diverse cast and high production values make this one of the only programs on tv worth tuning in to see what happens next. How about everyone who gave this a bad review after one episode shut the f up and give it a chance to breath. Well worth your time if your a sci fi fan.

It has little stumbles, being a bit too dour compared to the lofty ideals it upholds later in the season, but it gives us something that few Star Trek shows have, a season long narrative with themes that permeate and surround the show, giving each individual episode more context and meaning to the larger story, which actually works very well for this franchise. Aside from that the acting, special effects, VFX, costumes, sound design, music, direction are all incredible. The writing takes a noticeable and dramatic climb in quality at the end of the first half of the season, and continues into some truly epic and must see sci-fi in the second half. Its format and pace are very different from past versions of Trek--I have mostly enjoyed the different series but I wouldn't qualify as a Trekkie. However, after about the 3rd episode of Discovery, I can't wait for the following week's episode. The last couple of episodes have left me at the edge of my chair counting down the days until the next installment. I wouldn't have said Bravo in months, but, I will now. Take it or leave it. Let’s face it most plot points, set pieces etc etc are pretty much interchangeable within a genre. My point is that if the producers had let the creative team actually come up with their own premises, ideas and characters instead of relentlessly rehashing old ideas then a new and exciting franchise could have been born. Or crashed, burned and fizzled our after one season but you know what? That’s the nature of the beast. That’s what keeps people interested. While I definitely didn’t hate Star Trek discovery personally, I can understand why people feel let down. I honestly think that if the exact same team that made STD (wow unfortunate acronym) had made a new, original sci-fi series it would have been great. Sadly it seems that creative and innovative ideas are growing rarer every year. By the time I die I’ll probably have watched Star Wars episode 87b. And **** hated that one too. Expand

This is a different Star Trek because this is a different decade than when the others aired. The way we tell stories now is entirely different than how we told stories in the early aughts, 90s and 60s.

    Some common critiques:
The Klingons looks different - yup, they also didn't have any prosthetics in TOS
The technology looks too advanced for it to take place before TOS - I really don't want to watch actors push radio shack buttons glued onto cardboard in a show produced this side of of the millennium.
Not everyone is an altruistic blowhard, Gene Roddenberry would not approve! - meh, the main character is annoyingly moral and so is the first Captain we encounter.
It's too politically charged- have you watched any Star Trek, ever? People lost their **** over Dax having the first broadcast "lesbian" kiss, or how about a black bridge officer, let alone a woman Captain. The show has always pushed progressive politics in one way or another, and there's always been someone to object and fold their arms saying "that just ain't right"

Some genuine criticism are things like:
Too much or inconsistent camera movement
Some characters can be annoying at times (true of any show)

Plus, Tilly is amazing and everyone should watch it for that reason alone.

So far, this show is definitely more action-centric, but it also has some interesting character development with the lead, as well as a distinct Klingon character I believe they are going to develop/follow in parallel as the show continues. The story also appears it will take a twist after the first two eps. I can see where they're going with it, and I'm intrigued. This show is a vast departure from previous Trek formulas, and that's a good thing!
The series has angered so-called "true" Trek fans because it does not appear to be ship-centric, and the main character is not a captain. Well people, it's time to BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE. Grow up and give the show a chance... jeez.
As for the show itself, it's great. Production costs must be off the chart... sets, characters, makeup, costumes, etc are all absolute top-notch & movie quality. Pretty amazing for a TV show. The episodes had me gripped on the edge of my seat all the way through, never a dull moment. I found the writing to be excellent, on par with newer more mature shows like The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica. Same holds true for the acting. I simply cannot understand some critics from users that pointed out here that TOS played in a universe with CRT monitors and it was after this series... Would you prefer old fashioned CRT monitors, and staff behind the screen who are pulling the doors and technicals / visuals from 30 years ago? that would be ridiculous. Updated technology is the key here as well as the overall fitting of the Star Trek Philosophy into the action. The klingons play their cultural aggressive stereotype that you love and the action is cinema movie level. Series start was really furious and I hope they can maintain that level.

Those giving this show a low score only after the first two episodes have short memories and are grabbing to a 10 year old nostalgic view of the old series. But all those old series had a common trait. They all add antagonists.
Go ahead and watch some of the first episodes of the older series. Khan, the Q, the Borg queen, Klingons and so on. The very first episode of the TNG introduced the Q.
I'm giving Discovery a 10 because it is the best start of a Star Trek series. The main characters are strong. Discovery gives the best introduction to Klingons. Their tribal nature. The new look reflects it. And the use of Klingon language makes it more credible when compared to previous series where Klingons for some reason always spoke perfect English.
If you want to stick to the past keep this in mind. The original series was created in the 60's. The computer consoles had buttons instead of touch displays because that's the best they could do
at the time. We now have iPads and **** and what we expect from the future is not a star ship with buttons. If Star Trek does not evolve visually it will die along side a generation. I dont't want that. I want Star Trek to continue to inspire future generations.
No Star Trek Discovery is not like TOS. But it is Star Trek. Fans praised the fan created Axanar. That focused on the battle of Axanar. Star Trek Discovery is truly leaps ahead what was possible in older shows. I'm looking forward to see what will happen.

This is just poor casting, especially when taking into consideration that at this point in the Star Trek universe hand-to-hand combat was much more common than later series like Generations.

I did like the first officer, Michael Burnham. She is clearly a strong black woman who has been cast to a perfect role. She apparently was raised by Vulcans after her parents were killed by Klingons and still maintains a close relationship with a young Seric. That's cool and connects various other series to this one. Good touch.

The only technology that kind of stood out to me were several interstellar holographic conversations that took place between the ship and other locations around the Star Trek universe. I did like the classic design of the phase pistols and the sound of the doors opening and closing, both connected well to the original series in my opinion. There was also a space walk, which included some wonderful CGI, to a sleeping Klingon ship. The production value is super.

The Klingons' look has been directly taken from the most recent movies. Personally, I prefer the look of Klingons from Generations, but there is at least a clear connection between this series and the movies. I can appreciate that effort, i just don't like it.

So, in short, there are definitely things I didn't like about this one episode, however, i did like the cliff hanger at the end so there is hope. I can also clearly remember the first episodes of Generations 30 years ago, and they were awful. However, changes were made and the series has become a classic. So, please add some depth to the characters, some banter between crew mates, and plot lines that keep us interested and coming back. Don't try to be political, just entertain.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is based on the first 2 episodes. I don't like being forced into a subscription service, but I don't fault the show for that. It will hopefully last far longer than this inconvenience. As a Trek show, I am pleasantly surprised. I wanted a new episodic TNG and I am still disappointed this show is a character driven narrative, but so far, I find the main character and the Klingons remarkably deep. Vulcan adoption has been long a feature of the universe, but this background story so far seems fresh. I also found the Klingon/Federation conflict pretty spot on. There's a rich appreciation of Klingon honor and brutality, and a legitimate understanding that the Federation presents a real threat to their group identity. The Federation is a little more one-note--the leaders are naïve and want to negotiate and no one properly understands the Klingons' motivations. So, all in all, I'm looking forward to where it goes. Here's the deal: Star Trek, all the older series, are OLD. We love them, but they are old. Not just chronologically old, but also old fashioned. New things need to be NEW.

Star Trek Discovery is an excellent example of how to modernise an old franchise. It gets rid of the occasional cheesyness and frequent geekyness the series is known for and replaces it with narrative, extremely high production values and more action. So far, every episode will make you believe you're watching a high budget movie. It follows a single character closely, instead of focusing on the entire officer crew.

If Battlestar and Star Trek had a baby and that baby was raised by Mass Effect, this is what you would get. I'm personally enjoying it a lot more than the rebooted movies, which are still pretty good in thier own way.

The Klingons look different, fans don't like that because they aren't used to the look and find it distracting, I understand that. However, the new design is far superior, aesthetically. They look more warrior-like and more imposing. If this had been the only version of what a Klingon looked like from the start of Star Trek, the fans would love it. The complaints have nothing to do with the way they look, it's purely because they look different.

Fans also don't like that the technology looks way more advanced than the Original Series, even though Discovery is set before it. It's not the 60's anymore, we don't make things look old and rubbish just to follow suit. If they could have made ST:TOS look better, they would have. This problem stems from the archaic limitations of the time period the original was made, not in the design of the new series.

Normal viewers: Dive in and enjoy some high quality Star Trek. There's a lot to like here, especially for newcomers.

Hardcore Star Trek Fans: Keep going the way you're going and you're going to completely destroy this franchise. I get it, you don't want change.. but lets admit that this is better than nothing, even for you. If this series isn't a success it's not likely anyone will ever make a Star Trek series again.

Anyways to the show itself **some spoilers**.

The title sequence sucks. I much prefer the outer space scenes of previous series that have come before it. The set design is like the JJ Abrams movies style. Even has the lens flare! The cast seemed really small at first with only really 3 characters standing out, BUT we found out why in the second episode why they didn't focus on the different characters of the bridge crew.

Michelle Yeoh was good as the Captain and Sonequa Martin Greene was great as her #1. The green eyed alien was a little hard to get to like cause he's such a wuss but he may grow on you as the series progresses. I LOVE the fact that we are finally getting to see the war between the Federation and the Klingons that has been talked about on previous shows like TNG. BUT the Klingons didn't look right. Their skin color was off (too dark) and they looked more reptilian than any of the previous shows. Wish they would have stuck to the old makeups.

First episode was the setup while episode two brought the action...and OHHH did they bring it! Two fleets in a massive battle with well over 10,000 combined casualties between the two sides (8100+ just for the Federation). I am sad to see that Michelle Yeoh was killed off in episode two though. Would have liked to have seen her stay as Captain. Will see how the new guy does that they showed is coming up next week.

Overall great start. Not perfect but beats the HELL out of The Orville!

I grew up on Star Trek TNG, DS9, and Voyager. They inspired me, especially TNG, to pursue a career in science and engineering. I'm now writing this review from my office at NASA. Discovery so far is just as good as any of those earlier series.

It's way too early to crap on Discovery. The first season of TNG was terrible but it became absolutely iconic and, for me, epitomized Star Trek.

While Enterprise was on the air, I boycotted most of the episodes, including the finale, because of the theme song. Years later I watched the series all the way through, and then regretted not supporting the show while it was on. I vocally denounced it with many others. And it got cancelled. Now we've been more than a decade with no Star Trek series. I won't make that mistake again.

But the paywall is absurd. I'm paying for it to give them support, but they really should broaden the distribution so that it is more accessible. If not broadcasting it, then also let Netflix stream it. If not that, then also make it available for purchase on Amazon like HBO is or the Mars series was. I grew up in the lower middle class and my parents would not have been able to pay for CBS All Access (we didn't even have cable) so I would not have been exposed to and inspired by Star Trek.

Everything has been updated so the Star Trek franchise can attract a whole new generation of fan. And the classic Trek substance is there too, if viewers will look. The first episode was somewhat stuff. Think of all of the beautiful television we'd miss if the first hour didn't do it for us and we dipped out. Episode 2 was masterful. It laid the foundation for the serialized story to move forward in a brilliant manner. Dialogue was crisp and believable. Effects were amazing. And the overall scope of the production was vast - similar in style and cinematography to a film. ST is a show steeped in canon. And the producers have said this show will adhere to canon if you are patient enough. Which means by the end of the 15 episodes of this season any "canonical conflicts" will have been explained. The rest of the first half of the prologue improved, not a lot though. There was a little injection of back story to help understand the driving force for the decisions of the main character. All in all it was rather boring and felt like a strain to watch. But I fought on.

The end of the first part raised some interest. I was somewhat curious to see what happened next. Fortunately it didn't take long into the second part to realise that the entire first half of the prologue was a troll. It seems like it is only there to convince you that this will be a terrible show. The ensuing conflicts of allies and enemies turned the show from a total failure to something I genuinely wanted to watch. By the end of the prologue I was charged. I wanted more.

But at this stage it's hard to judge. Where will the show go from here?

By the end of the prologue everything has changed and the show is much better for it. If they can build on this formula then this could be a very special show. If it falls back into the style of the start of the prologue then the show won't last a season.

Happily Star Trek: Discovery strikes a balance between what diehard Trekkies love about Roddenberry’s universe and what J.J. Abrams injected into its theatrical resurrection. Ethical dilemmas and a clash between cultures and traditions comprise the fore of the narrative, but the hours don’t skimp on phaser blasts and broadcast-appropriate carnage.
