I wish they would have set the series after STNG been fighting klingons for 60 years now. The actors seemed good and the special effects are movie quality so there is that, but i agree with a lot of people that Orville feels more like trek than this does but so long as the ship battles aren't waged with a beastie boys track playing in the background i will hang on for a little while longer. great show and far better than the old boring star trek. If you want a show that resembles previous star trek go watch the hot pile Orville; Discovery is a show adapted to modern television and is actually entertaining.

Yes the effects were great and I can see it going somewhere, just not where I might have loved it to go. Orville, save me.

10 minutes in I was ready to throw this show in the bin. It was horribly uncomfortable to watch. Awkward dialogue, misdirected attempts at humour, some of the worst acting I've seen. I'd forgive most people for giving up in the first 10 minutes as I almost did and I love Star Trek. But I gave it a chance.

The rest of the first half of the prologue improved, not a lot though. There was a little injection of back story to help understand the driving force for the decisions of the main character. All in all it was rather boring and felt like a strain to watch. But I fought on.

The end of the first part raised some interest. I was somewhat curious to see what happened next. Fortunately it didn't take long into the second part to realise that the entire first half of the prologue was a troll. It seems like it is only there to convince you that this will be a terrible show. The ensuing conflicts of allies and enemies turned the show from a total failure to something I genuinely wanted to watch. By the end of the prologue I was charged. I wanted more.

But at this stage it's hard to judge. Where will the show go from here?

By the end of the prologue everything has changed and the show is much better for it. If they can build on this formula then this could be a very special show. If it falls back into the style of the start of the prologue then the show won't last a season.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is below zero stars, it's zero kelvin. No. Temperature scales, not that ridiculous ship.

The torturous opening pretty much sets the tone for the first episode. Likely the rest of the series. Captain exposition is on a planet explaining everything to us as though we're 5 year olds... "I'm the captain"... "I'm your first officer", "We've served together for 7 years"... "I'm the captain and think you should get a promotion"... "If I were on this planet I'd blend in because I'm a xeno-anthropologist". That's scarily similar to the actual dialogue. No joke.

Terrible writing throughout. Star Trek is legendary for it's technobabble (in a good way). This is just babble. "Point 7 second field burst at level settings 13 point 5". However you're reading that, it's better than the actress that delivered it. I was offended.

Then we find the girls have been walking in a 'circle', still on this damn planet. No, they draw out the Starfleet insignia with their footprints in the sand so the ship could spot them. That's right, the ships sensors couldn't penetrate some interference but their cameras could somehow see under the storm clouds. We're not idiots.

...well, aside from those that up-rate this garbage. Not including all the studios fake accounts.

I'm glad all the girls in the series are fugly as hell. This way I'm not offended that they aren't wearing skirts short enough to see their underwear. Even the lovingly innocent Terry Farrell managed it in DS9. They aren't Enterprise uniforms, they aren't the original series. They were probably left over from some rubbish like Defiance. Wouldn't know.

Actors? Terrible. Every single one of them. Maybe not the doctor but he hasn't much screen presence. You know why Asians don't get cast in lead roles more? Michelle Yeoh. I've seen more realistic acting from puppets in Team America. She arches in the captain's chair as though she has severe piles and her arms are taped to it. Surely they'd have given her a cushion or something? When she's given the acting stick and tries to interact with another human, she just stares with a paralyzed lifeless glare. It's even more laughable when she's trying to interact with a CG character. Has anyone explained to her how a green screen works?

The black girl? Can't even remember their character names, that's how little impact they had on viewers. Just as bad. Has a bit more of a spring in her step, but zero acting ability. Delivered lines like she was on an episode of Dawson's Creek (watch it, loved that show). On such a high profile series you'd have envisioned high profile actors. Any actors would have been nice. Maybe another dog like in Enterprise. Everyone is a dog, that would be more believable.

There was a science officer who didn't seem to be able to do his job? I can believe that would happen with so few candidates to chose from over a hundred worlds. There's simply no thought or intelligence gone in to the series, beyond making money for another film no one wants.

I can't remember a crew who I've instantly hoped would all die from the offset. Not even The Orville and I wish Seth McFartlane (bum reference) the worst misery imaginable. Adrianne Palicki saves everything. Texas forever.

The effects? They're very good for a TV show. Which is what the whole series is based around; style over substance. An actor falling against a 'metal bulkhead' and seeing the whole set wobble is what makes sci-fi. It's serious, stupid, believable, ridiculous and always fun. This is stupid, but in a serious way.

The ship? Had a name? Something Chinese-ey? I don't know. It looked like a ship. Given the era you can't expect anything fancy, just a Constitution or Miranda. Looked a bit rubbish to be fair. Some background model left over from the latest film?

Finally... the Klingons. As you have already heard, are missing. Replaced with Rhinopians from planet Rhinos 7. Apparently one of the producers gets $1,000 every time a subtitle appears onscreen. So no more looking away for a split second, you have to read every damn word they speak. Or learn Klingon. Well it saves on hiring talented actors when they don't have to read lines with any inflection! Should have subtitled Michelle Yeoh.

Like whoever commissioned this nonsense, I have no idea what's going on. I hope there's no afterlife so Gene Roddenberry won't be in some torturous hell having to sit through this on repeat.

For the record. I survived until 5 minutes before the end of episode 1. Apparently it gets worse.

Just because it's new, doesn't make it good. When you realise the milk in the fridge went off 3 week ago, do you still drink it? Or do you get off your arse and find something better? Just watch a series you've seen before or try something completely different. You may like it. Don't watch this junk because they play the theme music and put up 'Star Trek' titles.

This is as much Star Trek as those Nike trainers you ordered from China off eBay.

I'm giving it a 1/10 for trying. Even passing fans of ST will be disappointed - not only does it significantly break canon with previous shows (in a lot more ways than just the stuff with the Klingons) it doesn't FEEL like Trek. Regarding the Klingons (and some of the other species) the CGI abuse is REALLY bad. Considering the cost of these episodes, couldn't they have afforded the much better looking makeup Klingons of years past? It's especially apparent in the eyes of the characters which don't seem to line up with skin correctly.

As for the story - pretty generic fare here. The main story we've seen before in Trek (Twice in Voyager alone with the "renegade" ship in the delta quadrant and their redemption story in a later season, and of course with Tom Paris) in which the main character commits mutiny in the name of their crew mates and gets stripped of rank as a result. Hopefully it'll be resolved in a different way, but I suspect that the writers just don't care.

They clearly didn't know much about Trek's history when going into this project, and I don't expect them to magically get an education in time for next season.

My final gripe is with the pacing - one of the best things about Trek is that it's not a highly serialized show. You can miss an episode and keep watching and you won't be lost. This variant has abandoned this in favor of a more serialized approach and they use it to terrible effect. Future seasons will hopefully end this practice and return to a more traditional storytelling method.

"Something something, honor. Something something, torch." Snore!
I guess Twin Peaks had me expecting something new and fresh and this is just stale cookie cutter "TV show" with the ubiquitous music rising to dramatic crescendo before the cut to commercial.
To top it all off, the opening title sequence looks like a Chrysler car commercial from 2005. We have seen that "drawing comes to life" animation trick a thousand times. Watch the title sequence from True Detective season 1 if you want to see an opening that pulls you into the story and characters. And watch Green on any episode of Walking Dead to see what she is capable of in the hands of a competent director with a script that doesn't make you want to kick your sofa.

Anyways to the show itself **some spoilers**.

The title sequence sucks. I much prefer the outer space scenes of previous series that have come before it. The set design is like the JJ Abrams movies style. Even has the lens flare! The cast seemed really small at first with only really 3 characters standing out, BUT we found out why in the second episode why they didn't focus on the different characters of the bridge crew.

Michelle Yeoh was good as the Captain and Sonequa Martin Greene was great as her #1. The green eyed alien was a little hard to get to like cause he's such a wuss but he may grow on you as the series progresses. I LOVE the fact that we are finally getting to see the war between the Federation and the Klingons that has been talked about on previous shows like TNG. BUT the Klingons didn't look right. Their skin color was off (too dark) and they looked more reptilian than any of the previous shows. Wish they would have stuck to the old makeups.

First episode was the setup while episode two brought the action...and OHHH did they bring it! Two fleets in a massive battle with well over 10,000 combined casualties between the two sides (8100+ just for the Federation). I am sad to see that Michelle Yeoh was killed off in episode two though. Would have liked to have seen her stay as Captain. Will see how the new guy does that they showed is coming up next week.

Overall great start. Not perfect but beats the HELL out of The Orville!

So far, this show is definitely more action-centric, but it also has some interesting character development with the lead, as well as a distinct Klingon character I believe they are going to develop/follow in parallel as the show continues. The story also appears it will take a twist after the first two eps. I can see where they're going with it, and I'm intrigued. This show is a vast departure from previous Trek formulas, and that's a good thing!

As for the show itself, it's great. Production costs must be off the chart... sets, characters, makeup, costumes, etc are all absolute top-notch & movie quality. Pretty amazing for a TV show. The episodes had me gripped on the edge of my seat all the way through, never a dull moment. And all six of us strongly preferred The Orville pilot to Discover., and those of us who are Trekkies strongly felt that The Orville, surprisingly, was far closer to Gene Roddenberry's vision than the authorized version (Discover) was.

Yes, Orville does occasionally descend into farce, with moments of **** 13 year old boy-level humor. But it has a beating heart, an ensemble cast you like and care about, screenwriting that isn't trying too hard, more plausible actions by the characters, and actually shows more affection and respect for Roddenbarry's vision than Disover did.

I was really struck by how unanimous out little group was about the two shows, despite the fact that three of us grew up in India, one in russia, and two are native-born Californians.

I've seen two more episodes of The Orville and have gotten progressively more impressed--it raises serious, difficult moral issues without getting sentimental or mawkish. And despite the elements of parody, you can tell that the show's creators have genuine affection for Star Trek's original vision.

It's clever where Discover is, metaphorically speaking, ponderous and pretentious.

Discover wasn't bad by broadcast scifi TV standards. But it wasn't excellent either. And if CBS wants me to pay for it, it has to be up there with Game of Thrones.

    It isn't.

Of its creators, I'd be tempted to say "They have no honor." (real Trekkies will get this).

A promising start, despite all the hate from people who apparently forgot how much TNG changed trek compared to TOS (and how much hate it received back then as well). A modern-looking, intriguing show with much star trek in it, as well as many things of its own. Remains to be seen which way will it go from here.

Sad. This show has nothing to do with Trek. Awful writing, Soulless acting, Stiff and dark. Now it will be years till we see something for real fans. They even turned the Klingons into cartoon-ish Monsters. No charisma at all. So glad I did not get "All Access."

What have they done to the Star Trek franchise?

The characters have no depth, you can't relate with them and they are unlikeable.
The Klingon redesign is a disgrace. Why didn't they used the old design.
The Story is not interesting at all.

Star Trek is back (on TV)! And I'm excited for it!

And if you're a Trek fan:

(Very slight info ahead, but nothing I'd call a 'spoiler.' Still, if you're sensitive, watch the episode before reading.)

This is the first time I've found the Klingons to be interesting. They've got an actual back-story and culture presented, rather than just being a mindless, battle-obsessed biker gang in space. (This is an old beef of mine, and I'm glad they're already addressing it.)

The Vulcan-raised crew member is interesting. She's like the opposite of Spock. You sometimes saw glimpses of emotion through his wall of logic. With Michael, logic serves to rein in her emotions during stressful moments as she remembers her Vulcan training, and you see it in her face and mannerisms here.

The ship and settings are great. They're JJ-verse inspired, and I'm alright with that. We can't have another TOS-looking ship in 2017. This looks like the future of our time, just like TOS did for the 60s.

Overall, I'm really looking forward to seeing where this goes. Most Trek series start out a bit weak and build from there. I want to see this series grow to become one of the best in this historic franchise. And so far, I'm optimistic about its chances!

New opening sequence doesn't feel very Trek at all. Not really feeling it.

Banter feels forced. The comment about sarcasm for example. It didn't really flow, and just felt a bit fake.

Bernham's character seems to know way more about science than the science officer. Wonder if she'd know more than him if their genders were reversed? In fact, all of the men seem snivelling and idiotic. Even the Klingons are depicted as an all male ship crew. What does that say about men? Even the admiral is idiotic and bull-headed. And then the Klingons show up, and guess who actually listens to reason? The one single female Klingon in the entire show so far. She even stands at the head of all 24 houses, leading them. Which would be fine, if by this point they hadn't painted all men to be idiots or weak or cowardly.

There's so much focus on the one character, that you lose a chance to get to know everyone else as much. It ends up just being 4 or 5 central characters, with one single main one. Other minor characters get lines but there's no depth to them, and that doesn't feel very Trek at all. Trek was always about the characters, and not just one character, and not even just the Captain. It was always about all of the characters, and there were usually a lot of them.

'Oh hey! A ship couldn't navigate that asteroid field! Let's send in a person on a jetpack instead!' What?!

The main character is smart, capable, brave, strong, and her only weakness appears to be that she feels emotion. In what way does that make her an interesting character? She has nothing about her that's captivating or makes her unique as a protagonist. She's basically the same as every other heroin from the past 20 years; emotional yet capable. Where's the extra depth that all the other Trek characters had?

Despite the failings so far, I'm enjoying the Klingons and the tension. Those parts are well done.

"We are your livestock of old," was a great line. It harkens back to The Next Generation where they say they no longer enslave animals for food purposes, and that shows a respect for canon in regards to the canon's heart, if little else. I found that to be a subtle and welcome nod to true lifelong fans.

Speaking of canon, however, the holograms are truly canon destroying. In the future they talk to people on screens, and in the past they talk to people on screens. Moreover, holograms are impractical and require much more power than a screen. It seems illogical that they'd use them for simply talking to a commanding officer. Plus, the Klingons use holographic communication technology also? Why? Why would both cultures use it and give it up at the same time?

The camera tilt and lens flares and dark sets are trying too hard to emulate JJ Abrams' Trek. Why you'd want to do such a thing, I'll never understand. Moreover, it's an overdone, trite aesthetic, which has been used in just about every space sci fi show and movie for the past 20 years, except for the Trek shows.

The pacing and atmosphere so far is close to excellent. It builds slowly but surely, rather than jumping headlong into it like the more recent movies did. There's still perhaps too much action, but it at least takes its time in making you care.

The moment where she starts demanding they fire first is ludicrous. Of course they can't, this is Starfleet. And then the neck pinch on her captain is an extreme over reaction, and not believable. It absolutely does not endear us to her character. She's also extremely rude and condescending, as is seen in the second episode.

More canon breaking with the vulcan neck pinch from a human. It feels more like JJ Abrams has brushed them up on their canon, rather than actual former writers of Trek (who are now mostly working on The Orville anyway).

Why are they sending two small people against a crew of super strong Klingons, in a close quarters environment where they are likely to have to go hand-to-hand? And the two highest ranking officers? They have security members, so send them. It's the little details like this that are ruining a show which was on the right track.

Why are the judgement council all sitting the dark, like some X-files villains? What's all that about?

Overall, I enjoyed these first two episodes. A fair amount, in fact. But there's just too many plot holes and tropes and a pretty unlikeable, uninteresting protagonist to make it something that is sure to last. It's a good show, but it's not Trek.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Trek Discovery: To boldly go where no fan wanted them to go. Dark, pointlessly dramatic with nonsensical plotting, this blatant cash grab fails to understand what Star Trek is supposed to be about in the first place. Not helping matters is the blatant JJTrek aesthetic - whereas normally Starfleet ships are bright and cheerfully lit, the Shenzhou prefers moody dramatic lighting and ugly lens flares. Characters, and I use that word loosely, spout exposition about themselves or their species in ways that have no bearing on the story itself.

As to the story - well, there really isn't one. The boring reimagined Klingons, here a barely disguised substitute for ISIL extremists, show how bad the costuming itself has gotten. Mush mouthed, and at one point with obvious black makeup smeared over the teeth, they've effectively taken everything interesting and fun about the Klingons and turned it into a farce.

As to the Federation - committing a war crime is not in character, at all. Blatantly violating Klingon funerary rights by putting a bomb in a sarcophagus is against the ideal of everything Star Fleet, and Star Trek was supposed to stand for to begin with. That's without touching on the whole "life sentence" absurdity. Someone forgot what a post scarcity utopia is supposed to be about.

Bottom line, Star Trek: Gothic Trappings is an angsty teenagers wet dream of Scifi, masquerading as a beloved series.

It was a teadius self indulgent opening, and from the get go I feared that if they couldn't do something as simple as set up the titles how were they going to do with an actual story? I had expected competent people at the helm of this show, but that was too much to ask. Its bad storytelling on multiple levels.

Normally I try to give a show a full season before passing judgement. The writers always need time to find their footing. But fundamentally I don't like being given a pretentious teaser and then been told to pay up. Im not a junkie needing a fix, and I don't think the audience should be treated that way.

As the show goes, its got some nice visual effects and art direction but these elements alone doesn't a worthy TV show make. The acting and story remind me of a fan film. The first thing they teach you in screenwriting is that it's the writer's job to convince the audience that the story worth watching. So far there's no chemistry between the cast, unrealistic behavior, Klingon's speaking in unbearablly annoying slow motion. The production team never even bothered to think about how people would relate to each other after serving for 7 years together or how officers behave in general.

CBS paid big bucks for those effects and production values, yet the show is so bad they should pay the audience, not vice versa to have us sit through this. It's more along the lines of "Star Trek 1" the motionless picture. But at least Bob Wise knew that he was directing a dog. This production team doesn't have a clue.

The writing, acting, and direction was all overwrought. Everything was trying far too hard to be over-the-top and extreme. The crew's rash, thoughtless reactions made no sense for a military-like crew. When Michael committed mutiny it was so silly, I thought it was a dream sequence. Really, writers? That was totally absurd.

The Klingons' art direction is arrestingly bad. Just a visual nightmare.

This series is atrocious, and now it's canon. Now I have to go to the conventions and watch shows like TNG have to share stage time with this garbage. Ugh. When are we going to get a decent Trek show again? Seriously, fire the writers of this trash and start over.

This show should have been called "Star trek Michael" because unlike every other star trek tv show which balances the time spent on the main cast, discovery pretty much only focuses on Michael which would be ok is this was just some scifi show but star trek was never just about one person. The visuals are great except for the Klingons which look like some failed mutant experiment gone wrong. The plot has to be the biggest issue I have with this show and just to give a few examples below:

Michael and the captain use a visual marking made on the ground in sand in-order for their starship locate them (very unrealistic given any visual identification on the ground would be near impossible to make out especially drawn in sand)

Michael decides to use an EV suit to travel to an unknown object in a asteroid field (Again unlikely given they have shuttlecraft which would provide much better protection & maneuverability)

Michael uses a Vulcan neck pinch on her captain in-order to circumvent her authority but the captain wakes up a min later and at the last second and stops Michael (It appears it was done correctly otherwise she wouldn't have lost consciousness but the captain would have not woken up a min later )

It will hopefully last far longer than this inconvenience. As a Trek show, I am pleasantly surprised. I wanted a new episodic TNG and I am still disappointed this show is a character driven narrative, but so far, I find the main character and the Klingons remarkably deep. Vulcan adoption has been long a feature of the universe, but this background story so far seems fresh. I also found the Klingon/Federation conflict pretty spot on. There's a rich appreciation of Klingon honor and brutality, and a legitimate understanding that the Federation presents a real threat to their group identity. The Federation is a little more one-note--the leaders are naïve and want to negotiate and no one properly understands the Klingons' motivations. So, all in all, I'm looking forward to where it goes. FX are not great but that is not the problem. The writing is awful. Over explaining everything. "I put my right foot in front of my left foot to get moving over this lovely sandy planet that is visited by me for the first time". Stop it, i'm watching tv not reading a Star Trek Manual.

As a subscriber to CBS All Access, I was able to watch the first 2 episodes of Star Trek Discovery. The first 2 episodes seemed like a 2-part episode, and will be as infamous as all the other 2-part episodes in the Star Trek franchise. My reaction..I enjoyed it!

I will say, this show takes a little bit out of every Star Trek iteration that has been released so far. First, this show takes place 10 years before the original Star Trek series. Like Enterprise, it just seems too advanced for that timeline; however, who is going to watch a series that looks like its from the 1960's? However, I liken it to the J.J. Abram's iterations of Star Trek. This show basically feels like a TV show form of those movies. This form of storytelling also reminds me fondly of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which ditches optimism for a grittier story.
This show, however, is unlike any other Star Trek before it. It takes from the same type of story telling as we've seen in shows like Game of Thrones and Orange is the New Black, using dramatic storytelling and flashback scenes.
My advice...do the CBS All Access free trial. If you have a Roku or PS4, you can download CBS All Access for free. Watch the first two episodes. This is one of those shows that every Star Trek fan has to watch, and they will either like it (as I do), or they won't. I'm willing to accept that it's different from the other shows and give it a shot. Will you?

I'm excited to see Episode 3 next week.

Don't listen to the idiots giving ST Discovery 0 Ratings. It's brilliant. The production values are amazing, the acting is top notch, the dialog is well written and believable and most importantly, the characters are complex and interesting.

As a fan of the original series and an avid consumer of every TV series and movie since, I was afraid the series would be hi-jacked by producers and writers who valued Brand over Lore. I'm excited to report the show included a constant stream of excellent fan service with subtle historical details that are accurate for the time and place that the story takes place. For example, there is a point where the Klingon leader disgustingly references both Tellarites and Andorans (2 of the first 4 members of the Federation) even though none appear in the episode. ST:D (yes its an unfortunate abbreviation) has clearly been crafted by Star Trek fans with loving attention to the details of the source material..

The most impressive part of the first 2 episodes in my opinion is the focus on creating a truly compelling culture for the Klingons that explains their xenophobic aggression towards other races. No longer are they simply 2 dimensional, evil props to be used as a foil to the Federations ethical and moral codes. We see glmpses of a fascinating racial history that provides logical context for their behavior and why the Federation failed so badly in early attempts to understand Klingons and how this inevitably led to conflict.

For the first time in years, I'm excited to see what comes next in a Star Trek series. CBS looks to have a huge hit on their hands if they keep up this level of quality throughout the show run.

There are several things that make the Star Trek "enterprise" fantastic. Among those is the witty family like banter between crew members, cool futuristic tech, action, depth of characters, and of course plot lines. Although I've only seen the first episode of Star Trek: Discovery, which means I'm still holding out hope, so far this current incarnation of Gene Roddenberry's baby has its phaser set to stun. And boy, am I stunned.

There is one alien science officer who is more afraid and cautious than anything else. He describes himself as being bread to sense oncoming danger and death, which he would like to avoid at all costs. How could he possibly be 3rd in command of a star ship? It doesn't fit.

The current captain is a small, middle aged Asian women who appears to be more frail than my grandmother....sorry grandma. I can't possibly imagine her in hand-to-hand combat with a chiwawa let alone a Klingon. This is just poor casting, especially when taking into consideration that at this point in the Star Trek universe hand-to-hand combat was much more common than later series like Generations.

I did like the first officer, Michael Burnham. She is clearly a strong black woman who has been cast to a perfect role. She apparently was raised by Vulcans after her parents were killed by Klingons and still maintains a close relationship with a young Seric. That's cool and connects various other series to this one. Good touch.

The only technology that kind of stood out to me were several interstellar holographic conversations that took place between the ship and other locations around the Star Trek universe. I did like the classic design of the phase pistols and the sound of the doors opening and closing, both connected well to the original series in my opinion. There was also a space walk, which included some wonderful CGI, to a sleeping Klingon ship. The production value is super.

The Klingons' look has been directly taken from the most recent movies. Personally, I prefer the look of Klingons from Generations, but there is at least a clear connection between this series and the movies. I can appreciate that effort, i just don't like it.

So, in short, there are definitely things I didn't like about this one episode, however, i did like the cliff hanger at the end so there is hope. I can also clearly remember the first episodes of Generations 30 years ago, and they were awful. However, changes were made and the series has become a classic. So, please add some depth to the characters, some banter between crew mates, and plot lines that keep us interested and coming back. Don't try to be political, just entertain.

It honestly doesn't feel like Star Trek at all. It feels like a generic sci-fi. Nothing about it feels real, from the ship, to space, to even the CGI creatures. It has a very modern feel to everything but it's just soulless. . The characters are extremely boring, and the chemistry and interactions also feel boring, maybe because the characters feel like they have no personality. The Klingons look ridiculous, I won't even go into detail about them you can see for yourselves.

Seriously don't even waste your time watching this. If you do, and if you are a real Star Trek fan, you will just be very disappointed. It blows my mind how people can slap a popular name on something so generic and try to pass it off as a good show. I was hoping for a great new Star Trek show to sink my teeth into, but I guess I will have to wait much longer, and that's assuming this show doesn't kill Star Trek on TV completely.

Just the worst. I really wanted to like this show, but it's awful. I found myself actually rolling my eyes many times. They just tried so hard, but didn't do anything good. Had the pleasure of attending the red carpet premiere. The budget seems as if it was a film per episode. This is an incredible addition to the Star Trek Universe.

Discovery feels like it’s adrift between the adventure-of-the-week format of its network-TV predecessors and the kind of complex serial favored by cable and streaming.

Star Trek: Discovery feels like it's just finding its footing. On the promising side, Doug Jones is already a standout as Science Officer Lt. Saru, who's from an alien race called Kelpiens. And James Frain is perfectly cast as Sarek, the Vulcan who veteran "Trek" fans know as the father of Spock. The relationship between Burnham and Sarek is one of the more intriguing aspects of Star Trek: Discovery.

Happily Star Trek: Discovery strikes a balance between what diehard Trekkies love about Roddenberry’s universe and what J.J. Abrams injected into its theatrical resurrection. Ethical dilemmas and a clash between cultures and traditions comprise the fore of the narrative, but the hours don’t skimp on phaser blasts and broadcast-appropriate carnage.
