The music and effects are pretty good. I he cast seems well built but the story line seems very weak and sjw-ish, at a child’s level. Clear breakdowns in Military / Star Fleet protocols obvious to anyone except the writers who obviously either never watched the show or had any structure in their lives. The story is weak and bears resemblances to a trip down the 2016 election by CNN. Just eye roll after eye roll moment aboard this ship of fools. The show was so terrible they decided to throw out the season cliffhanger bs with the enterprise. I will not watch the next season it was that hard to get through. I literally had to pick up my phone(which is a no no in my house) to distract myself from shutting it off. Every show is allowed bad episodes but some of these were so bad it was painful to watch. This is another show that had some really good things going for it but the writing failed to show up. It had a feeling of sad appeasement and tragic childish attitude. Expand

This show is laced with political correctness BS from snowflake writers with itchy vaginas. It's absolutely ridiculous at times and totally unrealistic like most of the crap coming out of hollywood. It's a shame really because it could be so much better if it didn't feel the need to ram PC crap down the viewers throats. i can see this being cancelled soon.

Everything that made Star Trek great is missing.
The likable characters, the diverse and thought provoking story-lines, the social criticism, the positive outlook, the focus on diplomacy and exploration has all been traded for terrible dialog, run of the mill sci-fi art style, a CGI action spectacle, second rate story-lines that have been not only been done to death but also seem to belong in an angsty teenage drama show, all topped off by characters that you couldn't pretend to like or relate to with a gun to your head. And let's not say anything about that utterly ridiculous and unnecessary Klingon redesign other than:"What were those P'takhs thinking?".
Don't get me wrong, the older Star Trek series have more than a few rather campy and outlandish episodes, but as a whole they mostly managed to be thought provoking and created one of the most thought out and coherent Sci-Fi universes populated by believable characters and species.

If they didn't call it Star Trek I would consider it a kinda ok 6/10 sci-fi show you wouldn't mind watching on a slow evening or as a distraction while doing chores. But as it is simply another laughable and sad entry into the Star Trek canon. If only they had kept it within the movie timeline, at least then it wouldn't have left such a sour mark on Gene Roddenberry's legacy.

It's a truly weird day when a Seth MacFarlane parody is widely considered to be the true spiritual successor to the likes of TNG, DS9 and Voyager and the actual canonical franchise entry feels like the parody.

On a semi-relatied side note I find it very odd that quite a few people seem to criticize this "libtard, SJW crap" considering the social criticism and very progressive world view that has always been integral to Star Trek is pretty much non-existent here. Unlike previous entries it never even tries to seriously deal with social issues.

This show has all of the markings of what they did to Star Wars the Last Jedi and yes my fellow nerds you should be very very angry!

The writers must be second rate hacks. The only actual fan of Star Trek left this abomination before it began because he too saw that the monkeys had broken free from their cages and were reeking havoc on the creation. Gene Roddenberry would be rolling in his grave if he saw what they did to his beloved IP. This show will inspire no-one. It will not create any new scientists. It will not create any new military personnel who trained in medicine. It will not create any new engineers because none of the things that made any of the Star Treks great is in this show! None of the science, medicine, engineering, or command structures are in this show because the CBS CEO doesn't understand or care about scifi and how it can change a life. Leslie Moonves made the decision for both the new Star Trek movies and STD to be as far away from the original as they possibly can.

Prepare yourselves for the abomination that's branching out to Jean-Luc Picard. He is next! When Sir Patrick Stewart said he might not be the man we recognize, that means the creators of his show will also be destroying Gene Roddenberry's genious by taking away everything that made Picard --- Picard! You have been warned!

But all you have to do is watch it and witness the endless string of contradictions with Star Trek canon to realize the people involved are ignorant of Trek. The stories make Sharknado look plausible; they are driven by the desire to deliver crazy twists, as another person said, that would make M. Night Shyamalan blush. The characters are inconsistent in their behavior and mostly unlikeable. Not only is the show inconsistent with Star Trek; it is at times internally inconsistent with itself. Someone has posted a revealing video of clips from past Star Trek series and Discovery, which show how Discovery violates canon again and again and again. Add to this disrespect for Trek history and unbelievable behavior (by a crew made up of almost entirely unlikeable characters who snipe at each other like junior high schoolers), the visuals, and you have a catastrophe. The visuals and tech look 100 years advanced beyond Voyager. I haven't even mentioned the Klingons yet, who look like giant crustacean globs. The final episode of the season actually started off well, as they'd made some corrections, but the way the war with the Klingons ended was unbelievably stupid and anti-climactic, and then came the introduction of the so-called USS Enterprise that looks all wrong. Ridiculous and Awful. The original NCC-1701 model was simple enough that plenty of details could have been added to it without at all contradicting the original design. But they chose instead to change the color, add disco flair to the nacelle supports, totally change the rear, change the entire profile. The notion that NCC-1701 would look like this between the two Star Trek pilots makes no sense. It is not even close to a transitional look between the first pilot look and the somewhat altered second pilot look. I have canceled CBS All Access.

The way to save this show is by revealing that it took place in some alternative universe and then for season two somehow shoving the crew (or at least Burnham) into the true original TOS universe with the real TOS look and no holograms or other beyond-Voyager-level jazz. CBS insists people won't watch a new show with the original TOS look. Meanwhile people DO watch TOS and all the fan series with the TOS look and, of course, the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror was so popular the internet almost exploded after it aired. People do still buy into the bright colors, short dresses, hairdos, and strong jawed captains. But CBS was too daft to notice and instead plunged into the incoherent mess that is Discovery, a show that is not about character, not about thoughtful ideas provoked by new and unique discoveries, but instead is all about forced unbelievable twists.

I assume that Paramont think if they put every minority and marginalized demographic in every show they make, then people forget that it's nothing but old white men on their Board of Directors.

This isnt true diversity this is just pandering. Not to mention the Star Trek has always been one of most diverse shows ever. I still feel like this is all shoehorned in there, and it didn't need it.

But in this quest to represent everybody and everything at all times they forgot to represent one thing, smart science fiction and good storytelling. Things that have always been the hallmark of Star Trek at its best. Tho honestly at this point we have way more messages than hits.

Instead of attacking fanfiction they should hire the guys because most of those low budget productions have a much better story to tell than any of their commercial products of the last 20 years.

Overall i think the show is entertaining and visually stunning. There are many moments that are absolutely awesome(Georgiou's conversation with Sarek at the end was a wonderful juxtaposition of ideologies), but there are many that just dont quite hit the mark(Tyler and Burnham's "romance" was completely unconvincing).

It's very obvious that the show was written from the perspective of modern successful shows. Lots of GoT deaths and plot twists dont automatically make it good. However, it is a fresh new take on the Star Trek universe and i think it is a good starting point for a modern show. Let's not forget, almost every first season of Trek is EXTREMELY rough.

The only White man who is not a villain is in a gay relationship with a Black man. There is a gay male alien too. The least competent female character is the White one. There is an Asian man who is too scared and incompetent to act heroically, unfortunately being Asian alone does not earn enough diversity points to warrant having a positive representation in this show. The remaining cast are female. heroic and confident, they are also Black and Asian and share homosexual moments. Maybe the future is non-White and homosexual, and while this show's representation of a future with a rigidly predictable social hierarchy may go down well on many college campuses, there is a flaw in this obsession with 'diversity'. When the Asian man was too scared to help save the ship, I kept feeling that it was more to do with his gender and sexuality than his conveniently scripted PTSD. When the main protagonist singlehandedly beats a superhuman Klingon in hand to hand combat I get the impression that this has less to do with her federation training and more to do with creating a positive representation of her gender race and ambiguous sexuality. It all comes across as inauthentic and overly contrived. To be fair, the original series claimed to be diverse, and maybe it was for its time, but it was mostly about White heterosexual men. Kirk fought Klingons too, but William Shatner looked physically stronger than other cast members on the bridge and clearly had a lot more muscle mass than Sonequa Martin-Green. At least the original show didn't make Uhura or Sulu villains or incompetent. It will take a lot less than 60 years for people to realize that the social politics behind Star Trek Discovery has caused very narrow minded and contrived stories, possibly more contrived than those produced less intentionally during the 60s show. At this rate we will have invented teleporters and warp drives before we can see past our sociopolitical tribalism to the extent that we make a truly inclusive Star Trek. I hope for a positive, inclusive and diverse future for the franchise... and also some better writing. Expand

What Discovery is, is a show, not much more than a liberal leftist take on homosexuality and doing "good" for various minorities such as dark-skinned people and people with intellectual disabilities set in a well established commercial franchise. Seemingly gone forever are conundrums, lesser of 2 evils and truth, justice and the American way.

A number of comments suggest, "it's a good sci-fi show just not a good Star Trek show", well quite frankly that's a crock of **** it's a terrible show, if it wasn't called Star Trek no one would watch it. Mid way during season 1, one of the most unrealistic scenes I have seen lately where one of the ship's crew opens the cage containing a ship-destroying-dinosaur-thing so she can cut it's toe nails.

I found most of the other negative comments by other posters to be fairly accurate, no wonder the first guy in charge got fired because he obviously knew the show sucked. I feel disappointed also that the majority of so-called professional reviewers are more concerned with being perceived as politically correct than they are with critically appraising a long running, well established series which is both a prequel and a sequel, thereby leaving very little room to change many aspects of the over arching story, within which it fits.

CBS seem to want a serialised show as opposed to an episodic one, but for some reason haven't actually provided a season plot... in place of a season plot we have "war with the Klingons", and a lot (I mean SERIOUSLY A LOT!) of interpersonal drama, but there are only ever 3 characters with any real dialogue per episode (and one of those characters is always Michael), so we cycle through the same 5 characters having the same arguments over an over again. This is made more tedious as each character's personality and motivations change every episode, I have no idea what a character is going to do or why they are going to do it. I don't like or relate to any of them.

The dialogue is very stilted, with each character taking it in turns to shout or cry their lines, to the point that each conversation follows the same structure: Conflict, exposition, resolution. At no point advancing the season plot, because there isn't one, there is no challenge or journey... Just a lot of people arguing.

This is simply a bad show.

I will not be watching Season 2. Other's on here have said watch Orville instead, I've seen a few episodes of that, and Orville is definitely a better show.

I am being very generous with the 2 rating. This show is cheap, predictable, illogical, and a total bore. The only problem is that it might be a bit too dark for kids but then again they get worse from watching the news so perhaps not.

Anyway, as many point out already, Star Trek has taken a very dark yet awkward tone. Awkward because its clearly trying to send a political message. Half of the characters are either minorities or gay. I have had friends from all said groups (I am of a hated minority group myself) but I dont like it when people stick politics in my entertainment and doubly so when the writing and acting is iffy. This is Star Trek, not blacks vs whites. Not gay vs straight. No men vs women. All the major leaders in the show are women. Half of the main characters are black. Half are gay or bi (okay I can sort of buy that one). But the point is, its not realistic and this is supposed to be SCIENCE fiction, not activism fiction. I want to see worlds that I have not dreamed of before, listen to someone talk about zero point mechanics, or subspace communication theory, or math, or science, etc. The only attempt at science in this show seems to be the silly spores which sounds more like a Tolken fantasy. Just add a few elves... wait...

The show is very poorly written with quasi-teen level dialog and too much interpersonal drama rather than actual "discovery." Also, the characters seem to contradict themselves at every turn. Micheal is hailed as some sort of genius and was raised by logic fanatic Vulcan, yet is in a permanent state of surprise at nearly everything that happens and cant make a good decision if her life depended on it, which it did and she mostly got out of it with silly luck (a la Kirk silliness).

I think the creators of this show were going to a TOS feel. TOS (the original series) was largely a failure which barely finished 4 seasons and was only replayed due to lack of color TV content at the time. It was clearly given away cheap as it played in the worst time slots on the worst channels back in the day. Why would you want to emulate that? The biggest hit in Star Trek, the one that attracted nerds and geeks is the Next Generation (TNG). Yet, the creators here took a dump on TNG and all that followed, lost their viewership and rolled back Star Trek to its failure days. Great work!

They asked for a season - so I watched the whole season before delivering a final verdict, which was: I hated this show so much I registered on this site to vent my anger.

The lead character is an unlikeable mutineer who shows disrespect to all of her peers and superiors in the 1st half of the season.

The other characters are peripheral and don't get to do a lot. We still know nothing about the majority of the bridge crew (you know, the highly trained professionals who actually run the ship in EVERY iteration of Star Trek) at the end of the season.

Praising "diversity" and shouting to the world about having a black female lead isn't enough if the character is not engaging or there are no other characters of note in the show. It just smacks of brow beating the fans to like the show otherwise you are "racist", or "sexist" which I find offensive. In this case the emperor has no clothes, Micahel Burnham just isn't good enough to carry the show on her own in my opinion.

The Klingon re-design is frankly awful. The terrible new make up doesn't let the characters emote well, the Klingon dialogue likewise, and the Klingon ships look like they belong in a different franchise altogether. The changes made to them are so radical that they look like another species altogether and I have to say I would respect the show runners more if they had created a new race instead of despoiling an existing fan favourite.

Even JJ Trek had Klingons and ships that were recognisably like the ones we are familiar with.

The changes to Starfleet are only slightly less jarring. Case in point the Andorians and Tellarites get ugly redesigns - but the Vulcans don't for some reason.

The writers seem to have focused on shock tactics and plot twists for the sake of them, and as a result the alleged serialised format just falls flat. The end to the season felt rushed and made little sense. In fact much of the show has people doing things that are plain stupid "because plot" and things that are vitally important to the overall story tend to disappear with no real explanation or reason.

I am glad that I didn't have to pay to watch this show, as it is on NETFLIX in the UK. I won't be bothering with season 2 when it arrives.

Many of my friends feel the same way.

My real fear is that this iteration of Star Trek may irreversibly damage one of my favourite fictional settings. I hope this show dies fast before that happens.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made it to 13 episodes. I really tried to like it. The problem is that apart from Jason Isaacs performance as the captain, this show really has nothing going for it. It tries to mix a dark and gritty tone with characters that are mostly starry-eyed idealists, and what you end up with is a whole lot of boring with a side of non-sensical writing. *spoilers below*

As I said, Jason Isaacs character was the lone bright spot for me. It felt fresh to have a daredevil sort of captain who didn't shy away from hard choices, even morally ambigious ones, if thats what it took to win the war against the Klingons. The grittiness and tone of the story matched his character perfectly. He was a warrior captain surrounded by sheep, and it was kind of amazing to see him rally Discovery to several big victories against the Klingon.

Unfortunately, you only get a couple episodes of this, as the show goes into this ridiculous parallel universe plotline wherein its revealed Isaac's character is the main villain, and then is killed off. This all happens in one episode, Episode 13 to be exact.

With the sole compelling character in the show killed off, I don't see a reason to keep watching. The story is ridiculous, the remaining characters are either boring or spend most of their time barreling from one emotional breakdown to another. Doug Jones is decent as Saru, but he can't carry the show alone.

This show fails as Star Trek, but perhaps worse, it fails as good sci-fi.

At the end of the series, Dad and I turned to each other and asked the same question: Why do they keep giving Burnham monologues? She is SO boring. SO boring! This is not Star Trek. This is a cold, dark, angst-ridden, unfriendly, morally gray, M-rated drama with enough in-fighting between the characters to make Gene Roddenberry roll in his grave. I call it "Dark Trek". It's an abomination. I gave it ten episodes because it's (supposedly) Star Trek, but couldn't stand to watch any farther.

You are lame and don't deserve something this well done. I seriously feel people are trashing this because they can't handle a woman lead in their precious Star Trek. Total sadness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (some spoilers if you haven't seen the first season.)

Firstly, I should probably point out that I've seen all of the other Trek series and must admit that I'm not an Enterprise Fan, nor am I fan of the newer reboot films. This may help to explain some of my views with Discovery.

Discovery is a tedious mess of a show that just doesn't feel like Star Trek. Unlikable, dumb characters and unnecessary changes to established design (Especially the Klingons) really stand out in the absence of an engaging story. The characters are emotionally very one-dimensional and make absolutely baffling, and often unrelateable, choices. I often found myself thinking "in what possible scenario was this choice a good idea?'. Compounding the issues with the story and characters is that there are very few consequences to actions. Major plot elements happen with no feeling of gravity (except perhaps the start of the klingon-federation war that the series mostly focuses on) and people get injured or 'die' with relatively little impact.

The characters are a particular annoyance. The formula is usually a) the character 'dies' only to reappear later or b) the character is actually not who they claim to be. This is fine when these thing happens once, but it becomes groan worthy when yet another character is masquerading as something else. This is to the point that, by the end, most of the remaining cast are either not what they appeared to be in the opening episode and only one of the 'deaths' appear to be permanent. The cast is also pretty unmemorable to the point that I can only really remember the names of Burnham and Lorca - the others just become 'the klingon lady' 'the annoying scientist' or 'the awkward ginger one'. Compare this to Deep Space Nine, for example, where the characters are relatively complex and memorable from the get-go.

The show also suffers heavily from being a prequel. Technology exists where it shouldn't in the Trek timeline, but this sits alongside an awkward attempt at continuity (backwards and forwards in time). These issues really impact on this being an engaging star trek show when you're constantly trying to figure out where things fit because it is a prequel. Then there are weird anachronisms, such as the 'disco' sweatshirts and the nightclub on board the ship which feel out of place and pop-culturey. I'm really hoping the series gets better, but the cast needs a complete overhaul and they really need script writers than can write an engaging sci-fi story that fits the star trek universe.

To give some credit, it does look pretty and the story picks up briefly about 3/4 of the way through with an unexpected jump the alternative universe. However, this is short lived and the last few episodes become a tired return to 'oh look, another character isn't who they say they are' and 'oh... that character is back...'.

The writing is very poor and is probably the element I take the most issue with. Dialogue is generally awkward and people don't really speak 'naturally'. Plot points are introduced for temporary convenience and forgotten in a drive to move the story along. Albeit minor, one problem that highlights this (and irrationally infuriates me) is how they deal with the difference between Terrans from the alternative universe and Humans in the federation-verse and the framing of this. They mention that there is a difference in people's vision, with Terrans being more sensitive to light, therefore explaining Lorca's optical affliction. However, nobody else seems to demonstrate this (particularly the empress when she is bought back to the federation-verse). In addition, this fact is dealt with in the alternative dimension, not within the federation-verse. Therefore, surely it should have been explained that the Federation Humans are less sensitive to light, with the Terran sensitivity being normal in their universe? It's probably ridiculous, but it does bug me that a Terran described themselves as having an 'affliction' that would have been entirely normal to them in their universe. Maybe i'm nitpicking, but the culmination of poor story and character elements mean that Discovery is a miss for me.

I'll gladly watch season two, but if the characterisation and story remains dull, I do not see myself going out the way to watch any future seasons.

This show has a lot of potential. I started watching it being very skeptical and would probably give it a 3 or 4 based on the first couple episodes. I'm liking the return to standard non-100 frame per second battle scenes and the whole idea of the spore drive. At this point, the show isn't as good as Enterprise so I can't see it making it past the second season unless it gets a lot better.

At the beginning it was promising. I was really enjoying the show. I was thinking that, well actually it shouldn't stick that much to canon and all old things that were working in the past. And I was right, it was best when it was inventing it's own things even if the were total scientific rubbish that good sci-fi should never accept. The worst part of it started when they started producing "blinking" to the canon fans like with Mudd episode when he was resetting time on and on. It was stupid, not funny, although it looked like it was the intention (it was just pathetic) and the ending of that episode was idiotic. Anyway, I was hoping that such cheesy moments will be from time to time... How wrong I was... Then the creators pulled the mirror nazi-humanity multi episode moment... I despise this mirror universe since the beginning of Star Trek, but it was something that was working in political environment in 60's with TOS. It was **** with ENT. It is fermented **** now. So: selling principles of Star Trek (like positive view of future, humans not getting in conflicts, being tolerant and so on, and so on, blah blah blah) for going into the worst parts of this universe? Total loss. Connecting the finale with the Pike's NCC 1701 was a cheap maneuver. Around the middle of the season one something was starting to smell terribly. Was it Fuller exit and not writing the proper continuation of the initial setup? Or was it that badly planned from the beginning? There were supposed to be 16 episodes. We got 15. Somewhere in time they needed to record new material when DIS started to get popular in the internet discussion. So I guess with the much disturbed production decision was made to be it just one season series. Later they decided to open it for second season. That's why last episode is so ridiculous to the whole war subject, not finishing it properly, doing unbelievable malakias... New Star Trek to be modern needs to disconnect somehow from the old, much loved series. This way it's just modern mediocre sci-fi like series, very bad Star Trek. No one is pleased. My girlfriend that disliked previous classic Star Treks liked this series at the beginning. But with declining quality she had no problem stopping watching at some point when I was getting frustrated but still continuing (because it's new Star Trek!). They killed much liked doc... they shouldn't do that. Lorca was killed just like that... and actually he was interesting. Most of core fans didn't like him ("he's not a starfleet captain with starfleet principles!") but that was interesting change.
The one that was losing Star Trek identity but still - if the rest was done correctly it wouldn't matter. And gosh! It just lacked vision on how to show Qo'noS! Mos Eisley in Star Trek brand... I feel like after showing big T'Kuvma ship with whole story and meaning of it, they used all creative fuel... So it wasn't all bad, but as the whole it is. Hope they will improve in second season, and if there's reason for it get the hell back the Fuller! I have a feeling that his quit was partially a reason for declining this season to **** level.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I'm glad I waited until the end of the season to write this. I was super excited about Discovery and couldn't wait for it to show. And then when I sat down all excited to watch it I was massively disappointed. It really just sucked.... So much so that after watching the first 9 episodes (up until the break) I didn't even bother watching the last 6.

But I decided I should see how this giant missed opportunity finished up, and I found myself having a mini-binge. I watched the last 6 episodes in 2 nights and they were pretty good. The whole parallel universe storyline was interesting and perhaps helped explain some of the 'darkness' in the first 9 episodes. If I've voted after the first 9 eps I'd probably have given it a 3, but now its earned another 3.

There are still a bunch of things that I think make no sense, and generally just blow: rotating saucer section (that appears to serve no purpose), the whole fantastical 'spore-drive' thing, and why in the name of all things holy would said spore drive cause a starship to roll rapidly when activated?!

To the point, the producers of Star Trek Discovery have clearly done a bait and switch by using the name Start Trek as a cheap trick to try and reinvent the Sci-Fi franchise wheel. A huge gamble that I believe, will ultimately diminish their fan base rather than adding to it. Rather than holding true to the fundamental elements of good storytelling with well thought out characters and story arcs, there is this persistent and deliberate effort to reach for the sparkling sound bite at the expense of believable and cohesive story telling. The major themes of the series betray the history and lore of Star Trek with no plausible explanation. This is a thinly veiled attempt to appear substantive when in fact; each attempt leaves viewers laughing at the absurdity of what the writers are asking from the audience, to suspend disbelief, which is after all, the secret ingredient which makes all Sci-Fi work.

The occasional suspension of believability is necessary for any successful Sci-Fi story, but when the audience is asked to do so in at least half the scenes, or by rewriting Star Trek lore and history, the producers are not asking us to watch Star Trek any longer. Instead they are asking us to take what amounts to an acid trip into the disconnected world of meaningless fantasy.

First impressions, when Star Trek Enterprise debuted the bridge of the ship was what you would expect given the timeline of the series. But in Discovery, the bridge looks more like a massive sound stage four or five times the size of the original Star Trek and two to three times that of STNG. With more computer screens than crew members to monitor them, it all sparkles and screams high tech, yet with all this displayed information, crew members continue to pull up fantastical bits of information from only two or three consoles. Let’s get real for a moment, if a crew member has to run, not walk, from one console to the next because of the distance, aren’t we a bit over the top of what is practical? Especially when you have a voice activated AI with the ship's computer. This is what I mean by all sparkle and no substance. Star Trek Discovery requires the audience to completely dismiss all practicality and leap into magic thinking.

Second impression, how in the world do human or alien crew members’ get from the hello’s of just having met, to I love you so much I’m willing to die for you, all in less than 15 minutes of storytelling? If you want your audience to buy in emotionally with its characters, there needs to be some plausible plot development around the relationships. Suspending disbelief on this aspect of storytelling truly is alien and not of this world. Maybe Star Trek Discovery would play better on another network in a galaxy far, far away.

I wish they would have done the same for the Klingons from the start. The season was going everywhere but nowhere...I think they could have saved it, if the Discovery would have come back at the time they left and without Georgiou…and 1-2 episodes sooner. Then they could have ended the war in a more sensible way regarding the Klingons. Allowing themselves time to setup how the Klingons would stop and not resolving to so many magic shortcuts. They switched so many times the villains that none of them were really important to the story. They put themselves into a corner where they could only use L’Rell in the end, without even set her up properly toward the other Klingon clans. And Kahless and the religion point got forgotten in the end. I did loved the actors, their acting. The FX were very well done, better in the end. But the story was just like a disaster in motion and spinning out of control, leaving us with a blatant rushed and shorthanded ending. I gave a 50%. This makes me regret Anaxar somehow. Expand

The performances in general were solid by the cast but the writing and direction were lacking exemplified best by the finale.

So we have set up a backs against the wall scenario, a war like implacable foe is at the city gates and everything you know says the enemy will not back down unless confronted with overwhelming force, they respect warriors and strength and if you don't defeat the enemy everything you know will be destroyed, you're playing for all the marbles.

You have a way to strike back at the enemy and save your people but to do so will mean compromising your ideals and millions of the enemy will be killed, whereas if you don't act millions of your people will die and the ideals you stand for will be gone too as they're not shared by your enemy. Had the writers followed the internal logic of their story and had it play out that Starfleet the idealistic organisation has to compromise its' ideals to survive and make some point about that's why they're ideals and people are imperfect and sometimes horrible acts are necessary to prevent even worse outcomes, that would have been a poignant arc and thought provoking, instead we had our lead character come up with an implausible solution that essentially has the war end because someone with no army or navy or broad base support, from a minority religious/political group turns up making terrorist demands.

The message is hardly appealing to most audiences and the reaction of the honorable warrior Klingons who respect strength of arms in battle is also unbelievable in that they meekly acquiesce to such an extremist demand, in complete contradiction of the way Klingons have been portrayed all season.

i could go on and on, the injection of certain contemporary politics which will date this show horribly is another topic that you could easily spend another few thousand words on.

Season 2 is coming as we know already but unless serious changes happen on the writing team, 2 seasons will be it.

But the biggest sin of Star Trek Discovery is that it is not Star Trek at all; and if it wasn't called "Star Trek", and featured a new universe, it would have died unnoticed after the first few episodes.

I agree that it is an imperfect show. My gripes toward it range from minor annoyance that in Enterprise they refer to Cloaking Devices as 'Cloaking Devices' but 100 years later, they call them 'invisibility screens, to how they seem to have forgotten what the ships and uniforms are supposed to look like in 10 years.

I had extremely low expectations after a string of clones of the fantastic Start Trek the Next Generation. I was preparing for yet more sanctimonious 2D characters, badly acted and rehashing tired old story-lines. But STD has taking it in an entirely new direction, adding richness to the Klingons, and showing that The Federation isn't always squeaky clean.

Rather than being all nauseatingly perfect, the cast of STD have as many characters flaws as they have talents. The exposition is done well without being a series of explainers, and the characters all feel rich and well developed as a result.

I can't understand the complaint that Star Trek should be about exploration only. They go to another fricking universe! The plot twists are clever enough to actually catch you off your guard, and they sitll find time to add a sense of wonder to what's happening.

The acting is just superb and I really don't understand the complaints about the acting as it is top notch. There is a great sense of humour attached, and plenty of scenes that bring about real sense of emotion.

Star Trek badly needed a new sense of direction, and STD has provided much needed vigour and charm. The sci-fi is credible and believable, drawing on current theories (like the multiverse theory), but finding interesting ways to project it. It can be surreal at times, intriguing, raunchy, heat-breaking, and elating.

I really don't understand the haters.

I loved this first season, and as a long time, Trekkie have to admit I haven't enjoyed a version of this world so much since The Next Generation. Plotlines were dramatic and well thought out and the main characters particularly well developed. Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham is terrific and skilfully portrays a strong, intelligent if somewhat vulnerable woman, guilt-ridden from a poor decision which destroyed her promising career. The cast, on the whole, is very watchable as an ensemble with some great scenes from Jason Issacs and Anthony Rapp. Shazad Latif is particularly charming as Burnham's unpredictable love interest, and Michelle Yeoh is just brilliant as her mentor. I would have loved a more substantial role for Yeoh; it was great casting to have her as a Captain and one of the main reasons I wanted to see the show.

The VFX are excellent, and clearly, a large budget was allocated to produce some quality work. It certainly paid off and transported us to many different and exciting locations throughout each episode.

I do not doubt that a lot of die-hard fans will find fault with this incarnation, it can never be the original or TNG, but it doesn't have to be. It can certainly stand on its own while paying tribute to the trek legacy. I hope season 2 will be as engaging.

The first half of the season was perfectly watchable, with the revamped Klingons a lot more interesting than previous incarnations and great special effects. The story itself was average but held my interest to some degree.
However the start of the second half of the season has been utter nonsense and in particular the fight scenes are just laughable. Just comes across as lazy direction

There are a number of strong female characters and not one strong male, at times it feels that its been written by misandrists. Get some balance

I actually liked this show. Nothing special and a bit rough around the edges but I personally enjoyed it. I see mine isn’t a popular opinion and I’m seeing a pattern. This show, and several other recent remakes, revamps or belated sequels would have probably been a lot better received by audiences if they hadn’t cashed in on an existing, beloved franchise. Let’s face it most plot points, set pieces etc etc are pretty much interchangeable within a genre. My point is that if the producers had let the creative team actually come up with their own premises, ideas and characters instead of relentlessly rehashing old ideas then a new and exciting franchise could have been born. Or crashed, burned and fizzled our after one season but you know what? That’s the nature of the beast. That’s what keeps people interested. While I definitely didn’t hate Star Trek discovery personally, I can understand why people feel let down. I honestly think that if the exact same team that made STD (wow unfortunate acronym) had made a new, original sci-fi series it would have been great. Sadly it seems that creative and innovative ideas are growing rarer every year. By the time I die I’ll probably have watched Star Wars episode 87b. And **** hated that one too. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is so political its boring...nothing feels natural in the show. The gay couple reveal did not feel like a natural relationship but mainstream TV checking the box that they had the first gay couple. Burnham is acted out by a brilliant actress pity her character went from emotionally devoid to ultra loving and caring in the space of 3 episodes! Took the mystery completely out of her. Then the show blatalntly once again tries to check the boxes from episode 12 by turning a very interesting character (Lorca) into a male villain who is taken down by two female heroins, the other female heroin being a previously ruthless emperor who tortured and murdered people but for the sake of checkboxes she turned into a loving co-star for Burhams (Marvel-esque) action sequence in episode 13. Instead of the evil empress dying in the end Burnham saves her so they can go live happily aboard the discovery. The script writing in this show is horrendous nevermind all the politics of the show. Oh and the show touches on slavery too in a total of probably 2 minutes on screen, the slaves were being sold by Burnhams new best friend the emperor...but Burnham forgot all that in favor of ticking check boxes. + for the effects
    + for the setting
    - didn't gave me that star trek feeling.
    - plot needs to be more complex
    Overall OK to watch

I am not a very sophisticated viewer--of anything. After many, many years, for me, "good" or "not good" comes down to whether I think about a movie or a show the next day. Ninety nine percent of what I watch, on TV or in a movie theatre, goes in one ear and out the other.

Discovery got off to a slow start for me and I don't strongly disagree with many of the negative reviews. Its format and pace are very different from past versions of Trek--I have mostly enjoyed the different series but I wouldn't qualify as a Trekkie. However, after about the 3rd episode of Discovery, I can't wait for the following week's episode. The last couple of episodes have left me at the edge of my chair counting down the days until the next installment. I wouldn't have said Bravo in months, but, I will now. Take it or leave it. But if you are considering diving in...prepare yourself to persevere through the first few episode, then, get ready for a fun ride.

Every first season of Star Trek, in any of the series, is usually a fairly laughable version of what every series eventually became. Ok, maybe the Enterprise series never really got there, but the rest follow that trend. So far I find Discovery one of the better first seasons, and it seems to be getting better as the season progresses.

Discovery feels like it’s adrift between the adventure-of-the-week format of its network-TV predecessors and the kind of complex serial favored by cable and streaming.

Star Trek: Discovery feels like it's just finding its footing. On the promising side, Doug Jones is already a standout as Science Officer Lt. Saru, who's from an alien race called Kelpiens. And James Frain is perfectly cast as Sarek, the Vulcan who veteran "Trek" fans know as the father of Spock. The relationship between Burnham and Sarek is one of the more intriguing aspects of Star Trek: Discovery.

Happily Star Trek: Discovery strikes a balance between what diehard Trekkies love about Roddenberry’s universe and what J.J. Abrams injected into its theatrical resurrection. Ethical dilemmas and a clash between cultures and traditions comprise the fore of the narrative, but the hours don’t skimp on phaser blasts and broadcast-appropriate carnage.
