    If you're not meant to think too hard about what's happening, then "Sons" largely succeeds at its goals, particularly given the performances, the direction (led by Emmy winner Paris Barclay) and Sutter and his writers' talent for crafting gut-wrenching individual moments.

    The second season revealed artistic ambition, reaching for a certain amount of depth in characterization and storytelling. Assessed on that level, the last two seasons have fallen far short of the mark and it seems season five will only repeat the pattern.

It's literally gotten to the point where it no longer matters what ridiculous, unbelievably impossible situation the characters have gotten themselves into. If one of them is arrested for murder, discovers they have cancer, and has their head bitten off by Godzilla in the first ten minutes of the episode, you can rest assured that all of their problems will have magically resolved themselves by the last ten minutes.… Full Review »
