"So Help Me Todd," a new series on CBS, is nothing if not a multitasker—it quacks like a comedy, walks like "Law & Order," swims like a social satire and flies, albeit awkwardly, past the pigeonholes. ... I was grateful for the third [episode]: It seemed to indicate the show was back on its freshly lain track and headed toward becoming whatever it's intended to become—"Murder, They Wrote," "We, the Jury," "Everybody Hates Todd," "This Might Be Us" or, better yet, something utterly original.

Light legal drama that’s neither funny enough nor dramatic enough to make much of an impression.

The series’ framework depends on Joan and Todd learning to get along, but their constant bickering and dripping disdain makes their detentes less than persuasive. If “So Help Me Todd” can land on a consistent approach to its premise, it might settle into something more balanced. If not, though, it’ll remain more confusing than truly entertaining.
