It’s not really a binge show, as it juggles disparate storylines and switches up key players and themes on a whim. But over time that feels natural; it remains entertaining and unique as its character narratives become deeper and more layered.

Despite this competent ensemble, the opening episode rests heavily on Bean’s arrival, and – quite aside from the typically fraught issue of whether his character will survive – it’s not entirely clear how Snowpiercer will maintain our interest without a descent into family soap.

There are so many elements here that work from the ensemble to the craft, but the writing often serves as an anchor on this train, slowing its momentum and potential.

It's says a lot that the best episode takes place mostly off the train. [1 - 14 Feb 2021, p.7]

Bean is clocking plenty of overtime working his nefarious side for the fans, but none of the hard work going into this production is enough to counteract the grim depression saturating this endless trip. Round and round the world the train goes while also moving further into downer territory.

I was curious as to how the narrative in season two would progress after the ending of the first, but I've been pleasantly surprised so far. I find it comical that the Salon critic Melanie McFarland gave season two a 40 because "it's moving further into downer territory"... she does realize that Snowpiercer is a dystopian sci-fi story, not Frozen, right? Arguably the best episode of this season is the one that isn't set on the Snowpiercer.
