    Single and in their 30s, each is a distinct blend of guile, guts and needfulness, traipsing through the dating world with predictable and even trite results, their chatter constantly hitting on sex, relationships and sex. Some good acting and some nicely shot romantic interludes provide some redemption for the series, but scripts need to loosen up and inherit some of the playfulness the actresses bring to their roles.     Parker is appealing as always, but watching the show is an empty diversion—like scanning a gossip column about people who don't exist.

    It's somehow not as funny or as clever as it's meant to be. It tries very hard to be sophisticated, provocative and kinky. But underneath the big city smugg-and-smirk of these junior would-be movers and shakers are some very lonely people. [6 June 1998, p.11]

Just what it was supposed to be. It fails sometimes for being TOO material and superficial, and the generalizations about sexual men's and women's behaviour may be offensive sometimes.     As a man in his late twenties I’ll admit I’m not exactly in the target audience for this show but generally the very best comedy and dramaAs a man in his late twenties I’ll admit I’m not exactly in the target audience for this show but generally the very best comedy and drama series can be universally, if not enjoyed, at least appreciated by people of different ages or genders. When it comes to Sex and the City however I find the majority of the attempts at humour fall flat whilst the show is just not well written enough to work effectively when aiming to work as a drama.
