Season 1 Review: If in the end it's just a long meditation on the idea that people need people, a four-hour metaphorical expression of the fact that you have to abandon old patterns to move forward, it is wonderful all along the way and magnificent in the end. Its last minutes are as deftly handled, wise, unpredictable and rewarding as television ever is. And these ideas are no less powerful for being obvious; the world is choked with people trying to realize them in their own lives. Lyonne, especially, is marvelous, playing Nadia. Read full review

Season 2 Review: Season two is bigger, in terms of time, geography, riddles, and mechanisms. But there’s a perverse backward effect to all that new roominess. Russian Doll wants to be more sprawling, leaving its emotional resonance smaller and emptier. An amazing and honest look into the issues of mental health and substance abuse, this is a darkly funny and always very witty look into the lives of people who need to learn to be more than what they have been so far by facing things they fought to avoid and it touched me.

I give this a 10 because, if this isn't one, what is? This is a masterpiece in character, cinematography, writing, plot, symbolism. There's so much here. In such a short time this series discusses such a difficult matters. And it does the work perfectly. Through outstanding actors and narrative it perfectly makes its work - it makes you think.

Some reviewers obviously haven't seen the whole series prior to reviewing. The first episode is MEANT to ooze ostentation and pretension, or the superficiality of the world in which we're living in, as it were. But as the show goes on, the falsehood of Nadia's reality strips back another layer each time she dies, and with that comes through deeply buried insecurities stemming from childhood. Alan too, is superficial due to his needs for everything to be perfect, but the same situation happens with him. It is not a Groundhog Day type show at all. It is a richly detailed in look into how mental health can be som deeply suppressed, and sometimes the worst of things has to happen in order for it to be confronted.… Expand

Natasha is superb, there is no other actress who could have done better. The series hooks from the first chapter, gradually evolving to a final climax worthy of film. The addition of new characters throughout the series brings freshness. The technical direction and scripts are the best. INatasha is superb, there is no other actress who could have done better. Sur le principe d’un jour sans fin, cette série propose une variante : la protagoniste concernée est la victime régulière de morts absurdes avant de revivre la même soirée, puis la même journée indéfiniment : bouge, meurs, ressuscite en somme… ou plutôt bavarde avec des cons, desSur le principe d’un jour sans fin, cette série propose une variante : la protagoniste concernée est la victime régulière de morts absurdes avant de revivre la même soirée, puis la même journée indéfiniment : bouge, meurs, ressuscite en somme… ou plutôt bavarde avec des cons, des métrosexuels, des agendas ambulants de diversité et justice sociale de mes deux, métrosexuels LGBT et j’en passe…

Sans compter les névroses de cette galerie de bobos et/ou de trous de balle new-yorkais à la petite semaine… Pourtant l’actrice principale est sympathique, volontiers cynique et désabusée… alcoolique et fumeuse invétérée, y compris de drogues plus ou moins illégales…

Mais franchement, malgré une durée plus que limitée (8 épisodes de 25 à 30 mn pour la première saison par exemple), on n’est jamais surpris ou si rarement que l’ennui prend vite le dessus. Ce n’est pas drôle et ça reste très superficiel, au ras du plancher d’une sitcom de bas étage avec la psychologie de comptoir qui l’accompagne : une bonne idée de départ décidément très mal développée !… Expand
