Using a sci-fi element to tell an intimately human story, "Russian Doll" is a layered, introspective and smart Netflix series with standout performances from Natasha Lyonne and Charlie Barnett.

The first episode is MEANT to ooze ostentation and pretension, or the superficiality of the world in which we're living in, as it were. But as the show goes on, the falsehood of Nadia's reality strips back another layer each time she dies, and with that comes through deeply buried insecurities stemming from childhood. Alan too, is superficial due to his needs for everything to be perfect, but the same situation happens with him. It is not a Groundhog Day type show at all. It is a richly detailed in look into how mental health can be som deeply suppressed, and sometimes the worst of things has to happen in order for it to be confronted. Expand

In such a short time this series discusses such a difficult matters. And it does the work perfectly. Through outstanding actors and narrative it perfectly makes its work - it makes you think.

I give Charlie Barnett a lot of credit for making the role of a boring-guy entertaining… that takes good acting.

There are lots of entertaining roles played by good actors in the series.

I kept wondering what the relevance of Nadia being Jewish was – only to find out it was irrelevant to the plot. It was just an aspect of her personality and of no particular importance to the overall story. About halfway through the series it becomes clear that the Jewish angle is a red-herring and Nadia goes off looking for answers elsewhere. I think I would have enjoyed the series more if I knew in advance that Nadia’s pursuit of a Jewish answer was a dead-end. But, did I miss an important point? Was that a commentary on religion in general? I don’t think so… a rabi gives some very cogent non-religious observation in regard to life in general.

So, Natasha Lyonne plays the role of Nadia who is completely undriven by lifegoals and accomplishments. She drinks too much, uses drugs too much, has never been married, not particularly attractive, she’s a slob, she’s self-centered, not concerned with her career… and, there is something liberating to the viewer about that. It is a popular character in today’s cinema because it is so liberating not to care about anything. Accept, that she does… and that is the story.

Carlie Barnett’s Alan character is the opposite of the Nadia character and that completes the plot in a very important way.

I enjoyed this series and I would recommend it to a wide variety of potential viewers.

Natasha is superb, there is no other actress who could have done better. The series hooks from the first chapter, gradually evolving to a final climax worthy of film. The addition of new characters throughout the series brings freshness. TheNatasha is superb, there is no other actress who could have done better.

An interesting premise that is delivered perfectly. Really funny all the way through, great acting from everyone involved (but specially Lyonne), good dramatic beats.

This series started wonderfully. But after a while it couldn't come up with an interesting plot, it became boring, unfunny..., something went really astray with this one.

Literally an amazing show, I don't know how much to describe the love I have for the first season and how uneasy it can be at times, not to mention the amazing song choice they did with Harry Nilsson's "Gotta Get Up". Amazingly great.
