For people raised on a diet of Call of Duty and sub-Tarantino knock-offs, SAS Rogue Heroes will feel like a breath of fresh air. For others, it will feel like an indulgent and messy rewriting of recent(ish) history, where each sequence has a 50:50 chance of hitting a bum note. This self-conscious melange of good and bad produces, unsurprisingly, a product of variegated quality.

I get the first episode is all set up, but it dragged on a bit much. We get it, the SAS, even in its infancy, was full of badasses. I don't think we really need an entire episode of bravado to hammer that home. And I'm not a huge fan of too much exposition, but some clarity around this point of time would have helped (a failed mission or the allies getting their asses kicked by the Germans would have established the frustration and need ,while adding some much needed action).

Outside of that and the inevitable and boring spy subplot to meet diversity quotas, the production VueScan and action are great. I can only hope.the action picks up.
