Something feels very different this season, it's definitely my least favorite so far. It's still very watchable but the jokes aren't landing and the show feels dumber. The meme about having to be smart to like Rick and Morty can go away for good, this season has very little depth and no themes. We're closer to a family guy kind of show than the previous R&M

Season 5 continues the slide into basic storytelling that made up season 4. It is difficult to craft stories that are as interesting and complex as the first three seasons, so I don't expect constant brilliance, but this era of the show reminds me of the last 10-15 years of South Park where they pick one or two "jokes" and mine them for all they're worth and make constant callbacks. Its just another show now. The animation is also taking a dive; it isn't nearly as imaginative or fluid as it has proven to be in previous seasons. Expand

This season feels like they already are in their 8th season and just don’t care anymore. I haven’t really enjoyed any episode OTHER than the masterpiece that was Ep 3. Honestly it’s just a very strange detraction from the R&M I fell in love with. Maybe it shouldn’t have been given so many seasons so the narrative would be tighter?? Idk. I found the first four episodes to honestly feel formulaic and unoriginal. I got bored with the one episode that is just about killing clones, and the one with the planet girl just felt predictable. The gratuity may have always been this high and I may just now be noticing it, but it just feels like it's trying to be edgy without having an actual purpose. Definitely the weakest season thus far, no episode in this round would likely crack the top half of best episodes of the series. The writing here is no longer winking and whimsical, it's downright smug and snarky (while also being rather lazy). The writing here is no longer winking and whimsical, it's downright smug and snarky (while also being rather lazy). It's as though the creators half hate the show and its fans, or find the burden of character development unbearable (the final episode's payoffs were all but muted by the fourth wall demolishing commentating bizarrely resisting getting pulled into serialization in an off-putting and narratively vapid way), and can no longer find humor in their own project, only endless cynicism crammed into conceptual vehicles that work to varying degrees (Mortyplicity was a great concept executed to mediocrity, A Rickconvenient Mort was a terrible spoof), . It feels like riding in a racecar with a driver who is utterly bored with the situation and resents greatly the desire of those in the car to extract pleasure from the things that they do. Why do you guys want to go around the track so much? Fine I'll do it and make fun of you for wanting it.

As a result the season's biggest sin is that it's simply not very funny, and occasionally openly hostile towards those watching it. Hopefully there's some magic left in the tank, though I suspect this show's best days are now behind it.

While the first two episodes are good Rick & Morty (7, and 8 respectively), the next two are bad to worse. Luckily by episode five they seem to have corrected the ship.

Episode 3 is mostly low-brow environmentalism, and sex jokes without anything of the tech, dark humor, or intelligence. 5/10 Episode 4 was so bad that I stopped at around the 10 minute mark. This was anti-Rick &

Episode 3 is mostly low-brow environmentalism, and sex jokes without anything of the tech, dark humor, or intelligence. 5/10

Episode 4 was so bad that I stopped at around the 10 minute mark. This was anti-Rick & Morty. Previously, even with the filler episodes, I never considered even skipping a minute. 1/10

Episode 5 is the same joke repeated endlessly, and explained every.single.time. I missed this the first time due to being called away at least twice during that viewing, and after being challenged to re-watch realized my original review was far too generous. This was another 5/10 at best.

Episode 6 is right back to the good old Rick & Morty. 8/10

Episode 7 on the other hand is right back to the new Rick & Morty, with the same joke used over and over, and never land. I managed to get to 12 minutes and decided to watch episode 6 again. 2 / 10

Episode 8 is better again, which is really starting to get frustrating since the REAL Rick & Morty is still possible. 8/10

    Averaging a 5.5 / 10

If the quality of the first episode of season five is at all indicative of what we’ll be seeing the rest of this season, it’s probably a good thing the show’s creators took the time to get it right. The opening salvo of the new season is spectacular: insane joke density, an ever-present silliness brushing up against bad taste, awkward social situations laid bare, and hilariously tearing classic sci-fi and genre conventions a new one.

It’s a quite brilliant 22 minutes and one with an implicit moral.

The show knows how to upend its own expectations, but it’s just as satisfying to see it harness some of the manic sitcom energy it thrives on without having to be a rehashing of some unrelated property.
