It’s an improvement on the second series: Bridgerton reaching out a bejewelled, entitled hand to grasp its mojo back. Still, what next?

The fate of Charlotte and George, as most know, has its poignant qualities, but if the protracted scenes of eating, dressing, staring at the moon and rutting in the bedrooms had been rendered a bit more concisely, "Queen Charlotte" would not seem quite as overlong as its six episodes do.

If you watched Bridgerton for the steamy scenes, Queen Charlotte will likely satisfy that desire, if only in its first three episodes. But those yearning for a more sweeping romance will be disappointed by this spinoff. Queen Charlotte’s most impressive feat is giving a stronger definition to an eccentric character from the main series.

Bridgerton fans will likely find Queen Charlotte breezy, sexy fun, but any attempt to go deeper sadly comes up short.

The issues of race and inheritance only bog the series down with every mention — giving few answers and leaving in their wake massive questions about Bridgerton’s world. With only six episodes, there’s still plenty of glitz and glam that longtime Bridgerton fans will cling to. But by centering serious issues without handling any of them deftly, Queen Charlotte’s final result paints a pretty picture, just not one you want to look at for too long.

The prequel feels rushed and slick production, usually Bridgerton's hallmark, occasionally goes out the window. ... The central romance and lack of chemistry between the central lovers is the real problem here. Mylchreest is horribly miscast as the king.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Most times, spin-offs don't live up to the glory that their original shows had but Queen Charlotte isn'tQueen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Most times, spin-offs don't live up to the glory that their original shows had but Queen Charlotte isn't that, I daresay that it challenges the former seasons in the main timeline if not besting some.

This spin-off beautifully meanders through the current timeline and the past, delving into how the Bridgertonverse became what it is, also bringing to view the love between the Queen and the King, and also how Lady Danbury became the respected member of the ton she is.

The acting is phenomenal, the younger actors were able to splendidly portray the essence of their older selves; the older cast also continued in their delicious serve.

The score is praiseworthy. Bridgerton has always been known for rendering classical versions of modern songs, but the selection for this spin-off is nothing short of brilliant.

The costume, locations, direction and cinematography as always are also wonderful.

The spin-off starts with Charlotte being shipped to England to be married to the king, and from the first scene shared between the leads, the chemistry is undeniable. They navigate through marriage with hiccups; Lady Danbury also begins her ascend into power, and it's comforting to see how she finesses herself into getting what she wants. I especially loved the fourth episode, some may think it an unnecessary rehash but I found it to be absolutely pivotal. Sadly, the cracks began to filter in after the fourth episode, it would have been better to see the descent of the King's mind. In all, Queen Charlotte was heart-wrenching, funny and bright, and a wonderfully made spin-off.
