Ozark season one had me interested from the excellent pilot episode. Some of the episodes in the middle are a bit slow which makes the first season a little too slow in my opinion. Great characters and writing so I can't wait to see where the series goes from here!

It is really well done and the climate of the series fill the hole in my heart left after 'Breaking Bad'.
I wouldn't definitely categorize the main character as anti-hero, but some of the characteristics are definitely there.

I am waiting for a third season now and all I can say is that second season definitely maintains the pace and proves to be even more than the first season managed to be.

The character Martin Byrd portrayed by Jason Bateman shows a man who wanted to live a simple live in one of the most modern civilized cities in the US (Chicago) but is thrust into pure survival mode, after he and his coworker were caught stealing money from the cartel, using the techniques he learned as a financial planner. The villians are captivating and 1 scene in particular shows that he has no other choice but to give in and make up the money he stole in the Ozarks (not even suicide would be able to save his family). Laura Linney plays Wendy Byrd and strengthens her resolve to help protect her family from an unfaithful stay-at-home mother to a loyal and strong protector of the family and willing to go to great lengths to keep the family together. The show is phenomenal but is set back by a couple of unnecessary story arks and poor acting by the Byrd daughter who spends most of her time just playing a whiny teenager. Expand

I've only just seen series 1, so I'm a bit late, but it was good, pretty, pretty good. Story not too unbelievable, the two principal actors, do an excellent job, even the baddies were just about credible. A good job all round.

My first impression so far of “Ozark” is pretty good and I’m looking forward to actually watch season two. It’s a show with a different take on crime and drama mixed together to envelope a dark picture of the struggles that the Byrde family faces. The plot revolves around a middle class suburban family in Chicago and Marty Bryde the main protagonist technically puts his family in danger with the mexican cartel. This leaves Marty forced into a corner but Marty pulls a literal get out of death card by showing Del a pamphlet of the Ozark’s. This leads to the Byrde’s driving all the way from Chicago to Missouri and the family ends up progressively changed by the town they live in.
Each character that is apart of the Byrde family is affected by Marty’s laundering business in different ways. To be short, Jonah becomes fascinated with birds and their methods of “seeking” out prey. Charlotte literally comes of age into a changed young adult after a couple mature descisons. For the sake of Wendy, she adapts into a slight and important mirror of her own husband Marty Byrde. Last we see an expansive amount of character development with Marty up until the very last episode. Even though Marty may seem like a calm and collected character at all times we see Jason Bateman make use of his face to speak loud for his emotions.
In total there are two total minor issues and the first is the family of the Snells who repeat their lines in bible verses to end with verbal or physical punchlines. Second, my question is why didn’t the Byrde’s rat Marty out if it was putting the kids in danger. The way the Byrde kids react is sometimes unreal and almost loosens the grip of reality. But my warm thoughts about this series is the camera work. From the first shot of Ozark, I could tell already that this show was going to be gritty considering Chicago and the Ozarks always seem cloudy without any sunny days. Every scene even when the sun shines it seems like there is no hope for the Byrde family. Since the writers of the show worked on the gritty movie “The Accountant” they took shooting elements and put it into this show. But the difference is that the Byrde family is fairly average and seem almost real at times in the way they argue and live. It’s not a bad show and it’s not great show but it lands in the middle of mild action, a consistent story line and has a thoughtful amount of character development.

This show really caught me by surprise. The plot makes for some great tense scenes. I found the characters to be quite interesting. There is enough "dark" sequences that make this quite an interesting show. Think of this show kind of like a Breaking Bad Lite. Well worth my time watching.

We LOVE IT. Me and my wife's two favorite shows ever are Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. We enjoy dark and gritty shows. Comparing it to Breaking Bad - a show I admire on so many levels - is actually fine. It's not quite as good (and that's not a knock), but Ozark is refreshing for a dark show and really had my attention throughout and Bateman is just amazing.

It starts well, it loses the way in the middle and near the end it seems to be demanding to finish.

It lacked strength and no doubt needs a more solid story for the second season.

I don't know what show these guys who are rating this as "66" are watching, but it isn't "Ozark". I've admired GoT, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, The Wire, and this series is every bit as good as those. The camera never falls in love with one character, all to the viewer's benefit, because the backdrop, plot and cast are all compelling. Grab a soda and enjoy the show.

The understated use of dark humor is fantastic, providing some genuine LOL moments. All that said, what makes the show so amazing is its character development. Every single player is well built, with traits that both support and refute the character's main purpose, which is what - in my opinion - makes everyone so interesting. Surprisingly good show about accounting and money laundering.

Ok, so it isn’t truly about that, it is only the premise. Just like the Accountant with Ben Affleck (I should call it the Auditor, because he was doing auditing not accounting) thrill me on a level that most shows don’t. How couldn’t I like it?

I just watched the show on an impulse. It kept showing up in my “recommended” list on Netflix and one 3am insomnia driven morning I watched an episode, and I liked it.

Jason Bateman and the rest of the cast were really good. The pacing went well, and Bateman did a heck of a good job directing and acting in it. I binged it over two or three days and will watch the second session when it’s greenlight.

The only issue I really had was how they treated the children. They kept showing the children unable to handle the situation and being overly childish. I guess I come from a different world were something very similar to the plotline happened to my family and the 16 year old, 12 year old and 7 year old never acted like any of those children. People don’t understand how adaptable kids are, otherwise we wouldn’t have child soldiers or child prostitutes.

That was the only real issue I had. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Pros: Almost all of it, especially the tight story and twists that do catch you by surprise.

Cons: The kids reaction to the situation in the beginning, and the fact that watching this makes me realize how old I am (Jason Bateman is only three years older than me and I remember him as a child actor).

I am in for season 2.

Jason Bateman is great in the show as well as all the other actors. You won’t find poor acting that spoils the script. It can be slow at times but I believe each episode ultimately provides some enticing plot point. There are a lot of suspenseful moments that you will find yourself holding your breath.

The fact that critics give this show such a low rating is exactly why I don’t listen

Ozark is a deftly crafted, complex story that is exceptionally well-acted, scripted, and shot series that maintains a high level of tension and suspense. Bateman and Linney, along with the rest of the cast, are top-notch. Yes, it does have many similarities to Breaking Bad, but it makes its own way and is one of the finest series on television today.

Ozark’s insistence on presenting the grimiest version of its story possible stands in the way of explaining why anything within its universe is happening.
