I was shocked that Ozark, easily the best show set or dealing with rural Americana since Rectify, wasn't rated in the low 90s. This show is highly underrated and that's a real shame. I read many of the negative reviews and some from legendary critics I respect (such as Yahoo!'s Ken Tucker) who IMO really miffed this one.

The best way to go into Ozark is with zero background and no expectations.
I think the worst way to go into Ozark is by comparing it to heavy hitters like breaking bad or weeds. The latter, Weeds no disrespect to Qween Jenji) hit less emotional beats in their last 3 seasons than Ozark does in just 3 episodes. It's laughable how many tv critics repeat the "this show is the new breaking bad" meme, so much so I normally wouldn't dignify them with a response.

However, the comparisons between BB and Ozark highlight a flaw with this show's reviews and contemporary tv criticism at large. "Prestige garishness" is when a show so overtly panders to critics and NATAS that the effort is cringeworthy and often lacks the taste it so craves. And, it's true that miffed Prestige tropes run rampant throughout the so called 'embarrassment of riches' that is the 2017 TV landscape. However A 'Prestige Trope' isn't inherently a bad thing. Bateman (Ozark's star and director) flirts with some basic 'prestige tropes' but instead of falling face first into them, Bateman deftly subverts them. Compare Ozark first season against Breaking bad's slow burn of a first season, and we see two shows with similar premises and thematic elements however these show are vastly different. Obviously BB season 1 wins against Ozark season 1 in most conceivable categories (particularly in style, balance and protagonist character development) however Ozark's first season IMO comes ahead of BB s01 when it comes to pacing, cast wide character development and episode-to-episode entwining of thematic and symbolic elements with their plot.

Inversely I foresee the potential for underestimation to mislead many a-viewers to overlook this wonderful series--thinking this is anything like bloodlines (yuck, I get bored and a bad taste in my mouth just saying it). While Ben Mendelsohn is acting gift from the TV gods, bloodlines is a steaming pile of boredom. I almost skipped Ozark because I assumed from a trailer that Ozark would just be a snarkyer Bloodlines with high caliber actors. I was thankfully very very wrong. Ozark May make you want to grab a triple beam scale or a graphic calculator but I guarantee after watching you'll never climb out of water and onto a dock the same way again.

Clever suspenseful writing makes Ozark refreshing, Bateman's character is believable and complex.
The story arc is unpredictable, which keeps the audience intrigued
Comparing it to BB is natural, but the show stands on it's own.

I really have no idea what show he was reviewing, because the Ozark I watched had fine acting, an incredibly exciting plot, and a gorgeous setting at the Lake that became a character in of itself. The cast is uniformly excellent: even the kids are wonderful, and the little boy is just heart breaking at times. The show is simply superb as a thriller, but it's also a complicated and ultimately very moving family drama, and what I think of as "literary" TV. Maybe it's the former English professor in me, but the experience of watching the 10 episodes of Ozark felt like reading a really good novel. Also, the script is so cool: what other show quotes from Melville's short story "Bartleby"? Expand

I think the show's lead, the money launderer, performs well and is well written and apart from the trailer trash girl the rest don't perform nearly as well, the wife in particular seems to be existing on a parallel plane.

I can't help but comment on Mark A. Perigard's (Boston Herald) review who gave it a score of 100, somewhat higher than Game of Thrones manages. The violence is not stunning, shocking or messy though it is some cases unexpected, mild would be my thought. Two scenes do spring to mind though, the woman being hit by a garbage truck which was unexpected mainly because I have difficulty picturing one racing down a rural housing area street at 100mph without applying his brakes when running some over or when the wife of the poppy grower blows the Mexican lieutenant's head off because just minutes before everyone was disarmed and seconds before they were all sitting at a table and there was no huge gun to be seen.

All shows have a burden to carry when they portray children and this one suffers that fate also. Why there is this insistence to portray children as seasoned adults in small bodies rather than as children inexperienced in life continues to mystify me.

Stupid, boring show. The thing that bothers me the most is that it could have been good. It was supposed to be the new Breaking Bad. Instead, it's just bad.

There's some good acting, but christ is it so stark and severe. I love dark, violent, and depressing shows, but they usually have a bit of comic relief. Not here.

The other problem is that none of the characters are likable in any way. They could all get shot in the back of the head and I'd yawn and watch something else without blinking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well, big disappointment. Season 1 was great, Marty and decent guy fighting for his life. His wife and family trying to cope with the truth about their plight. Now, everything is normal. Marty has gone over to the dark side and his wife has followed. Where is the moral struggle? Over the top gratuitous shock value violence. Comic book ruthless villains without an ounce of humanity, and way too many of them. And their plan, these savvy survivors - they're going to build a casino for the Cartel and get 3% in perpetuity as they head out on the lamb? Really? And the bad guys are going to go along with that? Try again. I'm out. Expand

Jason Bateman has found his home. Brilliant acting from both him and Laura Linney in this excellent thriller, mystery. Already watched 5 episodes (binge watching) and cannot wait to see episode 6. The cinematography is perfect for where the filming takes place and adds to the underlying feeling of doubt as to what is going to happen next. Can't wait for Season 2.

Yes, some people are more "country" than others but NOBODY talks with the extreme southern accents heard repeatedly in the show. It would also had been nice if the lake in the show was actually our lake but sadly it wasn't. There are some overhead shots that show the "dragon" shape of Lake of the Ozarks but very little else was really our lake. The lake here does look like the lake in the show around the state park area but MOST of the real Lake of the Ozarks is developed with large homes and huge docks. Not to mention, if you really took one of those little aluminum boats out on this lake, you would likely end up swamped by huge wakes from cruisers that should be on the ocean. So, even though I think the portrayal of local Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri people to be very off target and stereotypical to "southern rednecks and hillbillies", I did enjoy the show and watching for places that were actually filmed here. However, I didn't recognize very much besides a couple quick looks at the old "strip". Interesting show but not accurate to the real Lake of the Ozarks. Expand

Ozark is well paced and well crafted. Characterization is set up perfectly in the first episode, and as we watch the plot unfold, the decisions made by characters serve to twist the threads of the intriguing story. Characterization is set up perfectly in the first episode, and as we watch the plot unfold, the decisions made by characters serve to twist the threads of the intriguing story. I binged the season over four evenings, and the pacing was spot on for the 10 mostly hour-long episodes: we see Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) awaken from the torpor of his former life to make life-and-death decisions with wife Wendy (Laura Linney) for the business of his family with a compelling, devious storyline.

Sofia Hublitz and Skylar Gaertner are perfect in the daughter and son roles of the Byrde family without a single groan-worthy moment of child acting. The Langmore and Snell families further tangle the story threads in interesting ways. And Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner's standout role) completes an arc that allows her to continue to force future situations if there is a second season. Agent Petty's (Jason Butler Harner) drive to bring the whole money laundering scheme down creates the necessary tension with the other components. My only complaint is that Del (Esai Morales) really never gave Marty a chance knowing his actual participation in the skimming, but I guess I'm thinking of more understanding drug lords.

Finally, I have not watched the two TV shows that I see some of the mixed and negative reviews comparing Ozark to, but I find this tendency with negative (and even positive) comparisons counterproductive and the logic typically circular ("I loved the groundbreaking show, but I don't like this other show, so I'm going to say this other show *obviously* is trying to be the show, but it's not as good as the groundbreaking show" or "it's just as good as so-and-so, and that's all I'm going to say" don't help me with the merits and flaws). Watch Ozark and analyze it for its own value. Complex characters making problematic decisions have existed since before Chekhov and help create tension and conflict and therefore a story.

I give Ozark Season 1 a 10/10 and see no glaring flaws in its execution.

Overall I want to see what happens with this family going forward and Ruth a character I really grew to like played very well by Julia Garner (Might recognize her from the Americans) One more season should complete this story I think, I really hope they don't stretch it to a 3rd season like "Bloodline" didn't need Expand

I could not watch much beyond the episode where the Mexicans make their executions, the wife's infidelity and theft are exposed, and the decision is made to resettle in the Ozarks. The aftermath is just not a plausible scenario for me. Batemen's reaction to his spouse's betrayal should have been one of , " I think she should join her partner on the sidewalk. " and this is what I was fully expecting. That would have been the normal reaction, not one of reconciliation. The fact that this did not occur tints the rest of the series for me and renders it unwatchable. The writers need not have structured it this way, a poor decision on their part. Expand

I think the scenarios rang true without going into too much detail about the bookkeeping for money laundering. I think it also helped clarify why a certain politician had a casino and used that for the mob and let it go when it no longer was plausible. I was relieved when the owner of the resort drove away with a bundle of cash and only looked back for a moment. That was the right thing to do. I didn't like certain aspects of the show because of the graphic nature but it did drive home how desperate the situation was. Trying to decide who is truly evil, who is just surviving, and who should win is sometimes tricky. The FBI doesn't seem to be heroic, and the local police look in over their heads. Expand

I enjoyed Ozark. I can understand why it gets compared to Breaking Bad, but even still, it feels like a lazy comparison. I didn’t watch Breaking Bad when it was on initially. I binge watched it after the fact. I already knew all the hype--without any of the spoilers--for Breaking Bad, but couldn’t understand what the hoopla was all about…until Saul Goodman came on the scene. Then, Breaking Bad really took off. That was in season 2. For those who think Ozark falls short of Breaking Bad, perhaps they have forgotten how tepid season one of Breaking Bad was--not bad, not great. It grew to be great.

I didn’t feel that Ozark season one was tepid, even though I was not on the edge of my seat for every episode. I liked the flow of the story line. I enjoyed the development of the characters. I appreciated that there were some unexpected events thrown in, so that the show didn’t feel predictable.

Ozark is a valiant effort do something other than the cover of another storyline, like so many things that come out of Hollywood these days.

We LOVE IT. Me and my wife's two favorite shows ever are Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. We enjoy dark and gritty shows. Comparing it to Breaking Bad - a show I admire on so many levels - is actually fine. It's not quite as good (and that's not a knock), but Ozark is refreshing for a dark show and really had my attention throughout and Bateman is just amazing.

This show is like Breaking Bad in a way, with obvious differences - no tour de force Bryan Cranston-like performance, though Nathan Bateman does a good job; and the family is aware of what the main character does for a living, and the main character is basically fighting for his life rather than rising up to become a kingpin. The downside of this show includes the grossly inaccurate redneck cliches that abound and are common in Hollywood's depiction of rural people, as well as one slow episode in season 1, and 1 episode in season 1 that is just about all flashbacks but the flashbacks are in a hodgepodge order which is annoying and confusing, rather than interesting as I think they were supposed to be. I still have one episode to watch. Where this goes from here - where it (A) has a real story to tell, tells it, and then signs off with dignity as Breaking Bad did, or (B) takes the more common route of meandering and leading viewers on and on, losing focus, and contradicting itself - will determine what kind of rating it deserves when all is said and done. A word must be said of the view point of the writers. They are so west coast LA, that they cannot get themselves inside the heads of certain characters and end up parodying them instead, or giving away their viewpoint, such as when they have a 'redneck' girl say, "In our world" being intelligent can make you powerful. "In our world?" Like she has some point of reference? Like she's from LA or something and sees her own environment as some discreet "world"? That's not realistic. To her, her world is THE world. The other places she hears about are oddball places that may or may not really exist. She would never have said "in our world". That was the writer talking, who views the world of this story as a backwater. The characters born and raised there do not view their own home this way. Expand

Perfect pacing, camerawork, mood, lighting, etc. The story itself was very interesting and highly entertaining. Twist after turn and then another twist and so on. I look forward to seeing Season 2 and it seems fitting/natural that there would be another one (unlike '13 Reasons Why', which I did enjoy, but a season 2 is useless and unnecessary). I mean how often is my actual career field ever featured in an underworld type show with murder, mayhem and a wall full of money.

    How couldn’t I like it?

I just watched the show on an impulse. It kept showing up in my “recommended” list on Netflix and one 3am insomnia driven morning I watched an episode, and I liked it.

Jason Bateman and the rest of the cast were really good. The pacing went well, and Bateman did a heck of a good job directing and acting in it. I binged it over two or three days and will watch the second session when it’s greenlight.

The only issue I really had was how they treated the children. They kept showing the children unable to handle the situation and being overly childish. I guess I come from a different world were something very similar to the plotline happened to my family and the 16 year old, 12 year old and 7 year old never acted like any of those children. People don’t understand how adaptable kids are, otherwise we wouldn’t have child soldiers or child prostitutes.

That was the only real issue I had. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Pros: Almost all of it, especially the tight story and twists that do catch you by surprise.

Cons: The kids reaction to the situation in the beginning, and the fact that watching this makes me realize how old I am (Jason Bateman is only three years older than me and I remember him as a child actor).

I am in for season 2.

As this is my first review, I didn't want to go the distance and give Ozark a 10....but it really does deserve it. Based on the first season, it's better than SOA and very close to Breaking Bad. The show uses zero gimmicks to falsely drum up suspense, yet succeeds in creating genuine heart-pounding moments by the truckload. The understated use of dark humor is fantastic, providing some genuine LOL moments. All that said, what makes the show so amazing is its character development. Every single player is well built, with traits that both support and refute the character's main purpose, which is what - in my opinion - makes everyone so interesting. Give the show 2-3 episodes and you won't be disappointed. Expand

This is a perfect example of how the "professional" reviewers just don't know what they are talking about. Came to this show late, but absolutely love it--especially the lead characters played by Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. The had the most realistic, only a longterm married person can relate to, argument between a husband and wife that I haven't seen since Tony and Carmella. My first impression so far of “Ozark” is pretty good and I’m looking forward to actually watch season two. It’s a show with a different take on crime and drama mixed together to envelope a dark picture of the struggles that the Byrde family faces. The plot revolves around a middle class suburban family in Chicago and Marty Bryde the main protagonist technically puts his family in danger with the mexican cartel. This leaves Marty forced into a corner but Marty pulls a literal get out of death card by showing Del a pamphlet of the Ozark’s. This leads to the Byrde’s driving all the way from Chicago to Missouri and the family ends up progressively changed by the town they live in.
Each character that is apart of the Byrde family is affected by Marty’s laundering business in different ways. To be short, Jonah becomes fascinated with birds and their methods of “seeking” out prey. Charlotte literally comes of age into a changed young adult after a couple mature descisons. For the sake of Wendy, she adapts into a slight and important mirror of her own husband Marty Byrde. Last we see an expansive amount of character development with Marty up until the very last episode. Even though Marty may seem like a calm and collected character at all times we see Jason Bateman make use of his face to speak loud for his emotions.
In total there are two total minor issues and the first is the family of the Snells who repeat their lines in bible verses to end with verbal or physical punchlines. Second, my question is why didn’t the Byrde’s rat Marty out if it was putting the kids in danger. The way the Byrde kids react is sometimes unreal and almost loosens the grip of reality. But my warm thoughts about this series is the camera work. From the first shot of Ozark, I could tell already that this show was going to be gritty considering Chicago and the Ozarks always seem cloudy without any sunny days. Every scene even when the sun shines it seems like there is no hope for the Byrde family. Since the writers of the show worked on the gritty movie “The Accountant” they took shooting elements and put it into this show. But the difference is that the Byrde family is fairly average and seem almost real at times in the way they argue and live. It’s not a bad show and it’s not great show but it lands in the middle of mild action, a consistent story line and has a thoughtful amount of character development.

The character Martin Byrd portrayed by Jason Bateman shows a man who wanted to live a simple live in one of the most modern civilized cities in the US (Chicago) but is thrust into pure survival mode, after he and his coworker were caught stealing money from the cartel, using the techniques he learned as a financial planner. The villians are captivating and 1 scene in particular shows that he has no other choice but to give in and make up the money he stole in the Ozarks (not even suicide would be able to save his family). Laura Linney plays Wendy Byrd and strengthens her resolve to help protect her family from an unfaithful stay-at-home mother to a loyal and strong protector of the family and willing to go to great lengths to keep the family together. The show is phenomenal but is set back by a couple of unnecessary story arks and poor acting by the Byrd daughter who spends most of her time just playing a whiny teenager. Expand

Take note that the trailer is filmed in the dark as well - I am no fan of this type of presentation. Expand

Great show, great actors, it's like a somewhat different breaking bad show.. A bit slow for my taste but great nonetheless

Marty B. makes Breaking Bad choices with gun to his head. Not same as Walter White. Few characters to like or roooooot for.

I spent the whole season waiting for it to get good and it never did. This was the most boring TV show I've watched

It is really well done and the climate of the series fill the hole in my heart left after 'Breaking Bad'.
I wouldn't definitely categorize the main character as anti-hero, but some of the characteristics are definitely there.

I am waiting for a third season now and all I can say is that second season definitely maintains the pace and proves to be even more than the first season managed to be.

A lot of this would play more thrillingly if the characters didn’t seem as wooden; if the series felt like it was written to serve more than just a need to present power plays.

Ozark’s insistence on presenting the grimiest version of its story possible stands in the way of explaining why anything within its universe is happening. The presentation and the characters and the smug tone eventually coalesce into something deeply irritating. ... Ozark is offensive and doesn’t understand why it’s offensive.

The show has an occasionally suspenseful twist. (Electrocution in the water: Watch out!) But as it proceeds, Ozark takes way too long to make a few good points and to showcase a few good performances, most prominently Jason Bateman’s.
