I’ve been watching anime since the 80’s but never seen One Piece or read the manga, and attempts of live action anime, are almost always terrible - so I was cautious.
That said, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this from episode 2 onwards. Looking forward to more.

For example when nami told Luffy she hates pirates, on just a second gives so much info on the character than anime nami could on the whole orange town arch (and one piece its a great anime for sure). And this goes to the fights too. (Btw love see more of nami fighting. On later arcs she became quite powerful by her own right so is cool on this reimagination to see more from her on the beggining). From Luffy like just playing and toying with his oponents to zoro, always serious but like his oponents not worthy of him while nami giving her absolute best. Its amazing how the fights are not only fan service but also character work that push the story forward.
One piece again becomes the standard now for what you have to do to make a cool live adaptation of already cool anime.

Not a fan of the original anime, but this series just works: absurd comedy and drama about pirates and agents fighting for one last treasure. The action is memorable, the characters are funky, and they don't try to reinvent them.

Ok, live-action adaptation of a manga of all things and does not suck?!?! From Netflix?!?!?! That is something i did not expect.
Of course it is too early to tell how it will go, but it is a very pleasant surprise. Lets be hopeful, let be cautious. Lets not forget Cowboy Bebop trashfire just yet.

La mejor adaptación de cualquier anime que se ha realizado hasta el momento. Los personajes muy logrados. El CGI brutal. No se puede esperar nada mejor cuando es el propio creador el que lo supervisa.

Netflix's live action version of "One Piece" was... Decent! Which is a triumph in the world of live action anime adaptations. When I first saw the early screenshots and teasers for this project I'll admit, I did clown on it a bit and I was skeptical, "One Piece" being more over the top and absurdist than "Cowboy Bebop," and THAT live action adaptation completely flopping… I’ve never been happier to be wrong. My cynicism was completely dashed, and my expectations were absolutely blown away!

In this version of "One Piece," we go through a more streamlined version of the story, speed running through most of the East Blue Saga, with all the most important elements of each arc carefully executed with slight nods to some of the more "disposable" portions of the arcs. Some liberties were taken with certain characters and fight scenes but everything important was front ‘n’ center and was well executed.

I have way too much to say about this series, so I think I'll just condense a few of my likes and dislikes into a list:

    Things I liked:

    - All of the sets are beautiful, namely the Baratie.

    - The Wanted Posters: Every time a new Pirate character is introduced to the story, their wanted poster appears in front of them, and they destroy it, breaking the fourth wall a bit. It was a neat touch.

    - Buggy's character: My GOD this guy (Jeff Ward) knocked it outa the park! He was funny and intimidating. I think I liked him better than the original Buggy.

    - Dracule Mihawk's character: Another stand out. His actor (Steven John Ward) portrays the character perfectly!

    Things I dislike:

    - Luffy's Devil Fruit powers looked bad more often than not. Though, human stretching powers have a reputation for looking bad in live action.

    - Shanks' character: His actor (Peter Gadiot) just kinda fell flat for me. No where near as charming as the Anime version

    - Arlong's overall design: Dude was way too small, he's supposed to be a behemoth and he was barely taller than Luffy.

    - The near bastardization of Garp's character: Not only reducing “The Hero of the Marines” to a mere Saturday morning cartoon villain but going way overboard (pun intended) with his involvement in this saga.

Live action "One Piece" is great for long time fans and folks who have never seen the series before. 7/10, EASILY one of the best live action anime adaptations of an Anime.

This was my first contact with the franchise, so no comparison. The plot issues are distracting and the main character's backstories drag enough to make me loose patience with it. I stopped paying attention by episode 3 - it was playing on the background until the end. It has a fun and silly energy that made me smile though.

The part where the show fails is in the character building and the impactful moments. While the anime brought me to tears in several moments, the live action is not able to reach that as you don't feel very connected to their stories. I hope they can improve on that if there is a second season.
I also feel that they focused too much in tertiary characters like Coby and Buggy that are barely important in the main story.
It is still a very good adaptation and I hope it is renewed, I just don't think it will capture the attention of anyone but the fans.

OP has great characters, an infectious energetic and positive Main Character or MC as we call them in our little weeb world and the right mindset of wanting to tell a good story over all the nonsense that plagues modern media these days.

    The Good

I cannot stop feeling charged up every time the MC yells over the top of his lungs, or says it with quiet resolve "I will be the King of the Pirates." Luffy is one character that has always aluded me in my anime watches, the anime show's color palate was always a little too psychedelic for my enjoyment so I never got around to watching it. But in retrospect I think it works out well, Nami, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Buggy Grandpappy Garp and most of the extended cast were amazing to experience for the first time. After the Live action show I even tried to go back to the anime and see if my taste has imporved, but even though I knew what was going on the color was still a little too in my face, and now I fully admit after all these years of shunning OP, this was a 'Me' problem.

Buggy was my favourite character in all of the show, and I am glad we are going to be seeing more of him, since I am not well versed with the story line I do not know if he joins the gang but I would like to see him as a returning character. The character was brought to life with a surprising amount of menace and silliness that somehow works. All in all, the slightly realistic feel of the Live action seems to have done wonders for my appreciation for one of the legendary anime I have all these years left untouched, however as Netflix tends to cancel good shows I will pray to the heavens that they realize they have a very serious contender in the OPLA to keep viewers around for a long long time, I will be one to stick around as well.

    The Bad

Very little here is what I would call bad, a few nitpicks here and there, one stand out of 'could be done better' was Luffy's Gum Gum powers, they keep going into the uncanny valley at times. But it seems to work with the not taking things seriously vibe that the show generally caries, still, a little more in the effects department, maybe a blend of practical and cgi will work wonders.

    Conclusion
I can happy call myself a One Piece fan finally after more than a decade of being an Anime fan, the story of One Piece is finally begin for me and I will try and not spoil myself either through manga or the anime so I can experience this through the Live Action medium which is a shock to me considering the failures of LA anime's we have been served in the past.
The curse is hopefully finally broken.

Although the adaptation rushes quite a lot of content from the anime/manga, it does work to an acceptable degree.

Netflix had the difficult task of making a Live Action on a deeply cartoonish universe. That is to say that it is not only a question of rendering a few superheroes well in a realistic universe but rather of re-creating the entire fantastic universe of One Piece (the islands, the boats, the fish men, the particular style of iconic secondary characters and pirates).

Another problem that presented itself to them was to manage to keep the spirit of the manga with 5 times less viewing time. It is precisely here that the term re-adaptation makes sense. It is by reorganizing the events that they succeed without time acceleration mechanics (like 5 days later, etc.) in preserving the logic of the story, presenting the dreams and the story of each person, the elements which pushes them and their relationships to evolve, while being fluid and natural.

5 stars because although I had no doubt that the aficionados were going to have the best time overall. I didn't think the series was going to succeed in conquering the Grand Line. I have the impression that Luffy makes everyone smile!!

Honestly, I'm scratching my head wondering, "Where did all that money go?"

The show looks like it was stitched together by a high school drama department on a tight budget.

The actors? Unlikable. Except for the guy who played Zoro—he's the lone exception to the disaster. It's like they read the script but skipped the chapter on 'How to Act 101.'

The makeup looks like a failed YouTube tutorial.

And the props? Let's just say a high school theater production would be embarrassed to use them.

The plot has potential; it's good in its essence. But the execution is so painfully awkward that it takes the wind right out of the narrative's sails.

I can't shake the feeling that Netflix hired a high-priced subcontractor who then scrimped on every conceivable element, leaving us with what looks like a cheap knock-off.

They hired actors who'd probably work for exposure, used props that wouldn't pass muster at a yard sale, and pocketed the rest. If this trend is the future of Hollywood, then we're sailing into a cinematic apocalypse.

So, bottom line? This show could've been a treasure chest of entertainment, but instead, it's more like a sunken ship—with no chance of salvaging.

Translating an IP of this magnitude, of course the first responsibility is to the fans. So let's take a look!

It's no exaggeration to say that this series set a new standard for similar adaptations in the future. Their commitment to aesthetics, and their care in knitting the cartoonish side of the manga, and the realist side of live-action together, without offending the logic of each side, finally managed to present an adaptation that was not only a tool to justify the new medium, but more of a tool to appreciate both worlds!

They used a new aspect, realism, not to insult the cartoonist logic that is ingrained in the fan perspective. Instead of removing the comical factors because they don't make sense, they copy them to a realistic level that makes sense. So at the same time, they can lead fans to understand that there are things that have to be lowered for the realistic realm to work, and also show that there are new things here that were previously unexplored in the cartoonist realm.

That's also because the East Blue Saga, when compared to the other sagas, is the weakest in terms of structure. Eiichiro Oda, the creator, at this point had yet to understand how big the scope of the world he was going to create was, so the connection between plots was minimal. But three decades on, fans have a good idea of the scope of what's being talked about, and those behind the series clearly understand how to utilize it to build a more perfect world-building! As a result, it's not just a new rendition, but rather additional content that expands the overall lore of the series.

But there is a price to pay for realism in adapting a work as cartoonish as this, especially when it comes to "impact": In the manga, One Piece relies heavily on the juxtaposition of silly moments to serious moments, in building up the suspension towards the impact panels, which will be the main emphasis in the resolution of the entire conflict. The loss of the ridiculousness characteristics for the characters, makes the series limp in establishing the motivation towards those impactful moments. The relationship between the characters and the conflict often feels awkward, because there are actually silly moments there in the original source material to break the ice, but they are absent or minimized here in the interest of conducive realism. It is unfortunate that many of the impactful moments in this adaptation are ineffective when compared to its predecessor. Proving that the cartoonish side of the story is not just a gimmick, but absolutely integral to One Piece.

Solid foundation this season has brought to the table with all it could for one season. As a fan from nearly the beginning of the manga this is a great adaptation. It's very hard to properly translate a manga/anime to live action and Bleach and One Piece has done it right.

I'll admit I've never watched the anime or read the manga for this before, I saw that the anime was over 900 episodes long and dipped out, but be that as it may the characters were extremely fun, had great chemistry and was just instantly likeable, I very much enjoyed this show and I'm eagerly waiting for a second season.

Incredible. I've always been a One Piece lover and was scared to death that they were going to screw it up. They didn't, awesome. The actors, impressive, the rhythm of the story, great, the action scenes, more than acceptable and how it has recreated the universe in general is incredible. The only thing I hope is that seasons with the same quality continue to come out.

The whimsical elements blend well with the dark undertones within the story. There is really no dull moment as compared to the anime which sometimes feels like a challenge to get through. They do well in following the source material to a T.

The story is fast told, mostly because sidestories from the original work are left out.
That can be a good thing, that can be a bad thing.

The story is told in a way where you do not need all the sidestories from the original but:

Because of the fast pace of the storie i miss the deeper connections the crew has with the people around them.
Mostly if the people around them (the Crew) are connected with their past.
So Sanji´s decicion, as an example, to join Luffy´s Crew feels more childish, like a kid runs away from home because someone was mean.

The lack of deeper connections, so the viewer can catch and follow their emotions, is my main critic on this show.

Overall OPLA (One Piece Live Action) has a very special atmosphere, the acting of the crew and the marines are good, others are sometimes only okay.
If you know the Original you see all the love they did put into the show, that they really tried to do the most without CGI.
The fights are nice to watch, the camera movement is great. Not static but not too fast as well. Overall i can say that OPLA is not perfect but i had my fun watching it.

If there will be a Season 2 i hope the same people are working on it because it seems they work fine together and because they sure learned much about how to handle OPLA so the next Season deoes not need over 6 years till it is done

That aside, I would also say that it makes more sense having seen the original anime, as they have to truncate a lot of the 60-episode first season for this. But it's not bad. Frankly, I just can't buy into it visually. I wanted to like it more.

However the Visuals and casting the main characters were great and for some reason the lighting was very soft and looked like it was missing a cinematic look. regardless of the sets and settings, we're missing the characters interacting with the world around them. At least it wasn't completely Cosplay and every costume choice was great. in the end I probably wouldn't watch it again and hope series start respecting story over adaptation, regardless of Oda's (the creator) influence.

It handles its mission of adapting and introducing people to the world of One Piece pretty well. All in all, it's a good experience, a fun and silly one, while retaining its seriousness where it has to be, and it succeeds, to my picky fan's eye, to encapsulate the beginnings of Straw Hats' journey.
Yes, sometimes what fans deem important does not align with writers' choices, and there are things to nitpick and argue about. But I can tell the producing staff showed their love for the story and the world and did the best they could. At the very least, my hopes were justified, and my fears were dispersed. Do not forget the original story for this arc was written in late 90s, and by Japanese author. Adapting this to the modern and specifically western audience can be a challenge.
I liked how it turned out, and I fell in love with my favorite characters again, found more interest in characters I didn't pay much attention back in the day, and if it isn't the purpose of new re-adaptations, I don't know what it is.
The characters stayed true to their origins with some changes, the story is remixed and adapted to be more concise and inertwined. There is more context, and some scenes added in were a decent trade for the scenes that were cut. The inclusions of some - not spoilering - plotlines are also seem justified and even for the better, if we're going further with it.
