Summary:
Time period: autumn 1865 - spring 1866. Cooper Main, Orry's older brother, becomes a member of the Ku Klux Klan determined to undermine Madeline's efforts to help local blacks, so she asks George for help. Isabel, George Hazard's greedy sister-in-law, wants to buy Mont Royal and evict the Main family. Bent kidnaps Charles and Augusta's son.
