Summary:
On January 16, 1995, Kobe city was awakened by an enormous earthquake for the first time in four centuries. The earthquake measured 7.2 and rocked the city and surrounding areas. In 20 seconds, almost 400,000 buildings were destroyed, leaving just under 250,000 people homeless and over 5,500 people dead.
