Summary: Carol and Fred Kurpiel adopt two seemingly healthy children, when suddenly, they notice something strange with one of them. For some reason, young Ashley's big toes are in an unusual position with a bump on each of them, and she has a lump on her shoulder, which spreads to her arm. That arm soon gets amputated, and things seem to return to normal, until her parents discover a lump on Ashley's left shoulder. It seems that Ashley has fibromatosis, when actually she has had fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). When twenty-year-old Jake Geiger starts college, he suddenly feels intense pain in his back and discovers infectedcysts on his rear. His problem appears minor at first, but along with the cysts, hedeals withheadaches, fatigue, orange-colored urine, and jaundice.
