The complete utter disregard for the source material, the fact that they completely feminized Adam, the fact that they ruined Teela who is one of those strong wonderful female characters that were too few and far between in the 80s, Or the fact that they completely sidelined the main character, he man, it is on series. Oh wait we could also add that they made the sorceress, who is obviously the most powerful, and wisest character in the original show a moron,Then there’s the fact that they made prince Adams dad a jerk oh yeah they also sidelined man at arms, likely the second most important heroic man in the show… I think I’ve got it mostly covered there, oh wait there’s what they did with Orco. The only thing decent about it is the animation, and even that in some instances was pretty lame in regards to Adams transformation into he-man Adams design in general and Teelas design as well; she in specific went from a strong and athletic but still feminine looking character to… A Karen haircut having butch masculine bodied character, who is written as a self important and selfish child. Supposedly the second half of the miniseries will bring a lot more he-man, but as for right now I would not recommend the show to anyone who is a fan of the 80s cartoon or anyone in general who I respect. What Kevin Smith delivered here Was his distain for the character to show the intellectual property and the fans who loved it. Expand

He is now claiming the best selling character (Orko) was actually despised, and the lead character needed to be pushed aside for a female character to take over. You need to be especially twisted to think this kind of a bait & switch is acceptable. He should have just made a Teela spinoff series, for her own adventures. Instead he went to insane levels of pandering, and ruined what little remained of his reputation.

In case that was not enough to warn you away, he also twisted it from magic to technology based. As if we needed another hadwaving excuse of being so advanced it just looks like magic. Avoid at all costs.

No, this isn’t a review bomb. I had hoped this would be a good call back to the 80s, but it’s the same old, tired, played out “yas kween” nonsense we’ve seen over and over again. Sorry, but I’m not interested in your non-binary they/them heroine with the mental illness haircut.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Small glimmers of something good amid a flagrant bait and switch. The show, up until it's release, was repeatedly stated to be "all about he-man" and then of the five episodes. He-man is only present for the first. He dies at the end of ep 1. And then every episode after that is about Teela and her group of sidekicks. Then, as the show progresses Orko heroically sacrifices himself to let the rest of the group escape. Then Roboto dies reforging the power sword. Gradually whittling down the cast of older characters, all male, for cheap drama. While Teela herself is bitter and cynical for a majority of the show. Then, when it turns out Adam chooses to give up Eternian heaven to come back and be He-man once again. Also to be with Teela? He gets stabbed in the back by Skeletor, and left bleeding on the ground with a very lethal wound. So he does **** all past episode 1 except play second fiddle in a show supposedly "all about He-man". The only reason I'm not giving this a lower score is because the animation is good, and certain performances were worth appreciation regardless. I.e. Mark Hamill as Skeletor. Expand

But besides that the characters all became sniveling versions of themselves especially Teela who is now the protagonist of this series. Kevin Smith got one thing right.... naming the show Masters of the Universe, and omitting He-Man from the title because he is hardly present in the show. If producers want to spread their message, they should do so by creating new concept, not taking IP with established beloved characters, and shoehorn their message and ruin it for the rest of us. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The cast is good, and the animation does a neat job of blending the old style with modern details, but the bait-and-switch nature of the show is just unacceptable. You can't put He-Man front-and-center of every poster, make him the focus of all the marketing, tell everyone on Twitter that He-Man is definitely the main character of his own series, and then pull the rug out. This brand of storytelling-as-fan-trolling needs to go out of style. It's clickbait fiction and it's exhausting.

I'd be happy to watch a Teela show (especially with the wonderful SMG), but not if I'm going to be tricked into it. Maybe next time. This is a pass for me, which is too bad because I'm a Kevin Smith fan. But this time his obsession with hype got the better of him.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. +2 for the animators, such great artwork for such a poor story, and I feel bad that their hard work is connected to this Kevin Smith disaster.
Please...Do Not watch this show!

So it's not a surprise that this show does not contain the words He-Man.
It is not about He-Man at all. It is about Teela and her "friend".

This is a minor spoiler...but tells why I rated what I did.
A Major character dies, and all Teela (our new hero) cares about is that She was lied to and She deserved better. Not that someone just died!

If you want to watch Master's of the Universe, watch the 80's early 2000's or even the movie versions. Each of them is a significantly more entertaining and true story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I could not finish even the first episode. Even though the animation is really good, it was boring. The battle in the first episode lacked energy. The voice acting did not match the characters, especially Teela and Evil-Lyn. There was too much of Mark Hamil's Joker in Skeletor. Then, when Teela started whining about not getting told the secret and the King banishing Man-At-Arms, I turned it off. The King should have divorced the Queen because the Queen knew the secret. The way these characters are written sucks. It's clear that we are supposed to love Teela because of all the praise heaped on her, but she is selfish and smug. I saw previews of what is to come in the later episodes. The show centers around Teela who is whiny and self-absorbed. Terrible, absolutely terrible. Skip this. Expand

1st killed off #HeMan permanently 2nd all 4 important main female characters were diminished a shadow of themselves. Teela becomes a self-absorbed narcissist angst teenager who shaves her head and becomes basically Buffy hence why Sarah Michelle geller voice acts her. The entire show was so Kevin could kill #HeMan and destroy MOTU the story also lacks any full storytelling, so if your new to he man your left out. It's was a mitigated disaster non redeemable. Sad it was great animation to bad all that work was wasted here. Teela is a goddess ifbthey wanted to cover her story that could have been it's own show so it clearly shows this was never ment to empower women.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show have its good sides and bad sides, I'll try to do my best to list them correctly in my own point of view.(by the way I'm not an english born speaker so forgive my grammar and conjugation)

Not presenting the show as a spin-off on Teela and Evil-Lyn is indeed a terrible mistake. Having presenting the show as a spin-off may would have had lesser hype but it would not have had all the disappointment. Netflix shooted themselves in their own feet with that.

Good sides :

- Visuals :
They are good and feels like the 2002 rebbot.

- Teela and Evil-Lyn : I really love Teela and Evil-Lyn so having them as main characters enjoyed me.

- Good cast :
Voice cast is good, nothing wrong about that and it's a good thing.

- Evil Lyn :
Evil-Lyn is originally a good character and she's great in this show.

Not good or bad sides :

- Easter eggs :
Yep, there's a lot of them but here's the thing : they have zero impact on the story so... not good, not bad.

- Teela / Evil-Lyn duo : A good idea as Evil-Lyn is a well written character and the two have history between them but... they don't talk much to each other and that's a wasted opportunity.

- Decent average animation :
Not very good nor bad, the animation is decent but still under japan anime like Attack on Titan and the like. The previous shows were not better in this regards so I put that in "not good, not bad".

Bad sides :

- No menacing vilains :
Ok, in the 80's He-Man defeated Skeletor's goons easily but he had super powers and it was a show for kids. In this show He-Man is no more and it's aimed at adults so Skeletor's goons have to be menacing. Heroes sweep them effortlessly and even no name henchmen are more menacing than Trapjaw, Triklops, Merman and Whiplash. How can I feel the heroes endangered ? Is Skeletor and no name goons are the only threats ?

- Bland He-man :
Having a bland He-Man in this show impacts directly Skeletor as a vilain. How can I see him as a menacing vilain if he has been defeated over and over again for years by a tasteless He-Man ? Ok he have the Sword of Power and he became Skelegod but that'll remain in my mind : he was just the guy who has been humiliated again and again by an inconsistent hero.

- Shockingly immature, egotic and irresponsible main character :
Teela is presente as a capricious egotic brat in the first two episodes.
At the end of the first, acting as the royal army captain, in front of the Queen and King, as theu just learned the death of their only child a few secounds ago, she blame the deceased for having lied to her and make a fuss.
Seriously ?
Not a kind word for grieving parents ? Not a respectfull silence ? Not a ounce of empathy ?
It's ok to express your feelings about a deceased friend but not in front his grieving parents !!! Especially when you're on duty (she's the captain remember ?).
Try to figure that : you're in front of two grieving parents and a few secounds after they learned their son's death you blame the deceased for having lying to you ?
What kind of person can do that ?
And years after that, in the secound episode, when she learned all the planet will be destroyed without her help she answered : Nope, I'm still angry, you can all die (including myself and my friend by the way).
It took her friend to help her figure that saving everybody on the planet is the right thing to do.
How can I run for such an egotic and irresponsible character ???

- Empty characters :
Evil-Lynn and Orko asides, any characters seems empty and that's a shame because the Netflix show about She-Ra have deep characters with real motivations and whose occasional immaturity can be easily explained by the fact they are teenagers without adults around them most of the time. The silly thing is that the She-Ra show has been aimed at childrens and have deeper and more mature characters than the hero of an adult aimed show. For those who want to see good animated shows about the MOTU I'll highly recommend the 2002 reboot and the 2018 She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. They are aimed for kids but they have deeper scenarios and characters. Without having an egotic, irresponsible and immature main character and having a real menacing bunch of vilains this show would rate a 8 to me but here's the thing : the lake of real threat and poor treatment of the main character (here, Teela) is a real issue. Even the return of Skeletor in Skelegod mode isn't a menacing feeling as the vilain has been unable to handle a bland hero (here He-Man) for years. That's a shame because Evil-Lyn is jsut great and having Teela being an adult hero (you know, with empathy for other and a sense of duty even when she's angry) and adding menacing Skeletor's henchmen would have made a very good show. In that view, the show is only worth a 3 to me because the flaws (no meancing vilains and egotic, irresponsible main character) just ruins its good sides.

Unfortunately, the series itself was a whole different affair. Some really well choreographed (even great) action sequences and I liked Man-At-Arms, but everything else was just a terrible nightmare, characters butchered, starting with he-man himself who dies in the first episode. He dragged people who simply reported on it for a year and still goes after them even thought they were 100% correct about what a bad show this would be. Considering Netflix has lost 500k subscribers and missed their target by 2 million for Q1 2001, I wonder what the shareholders think. Especially if his comments saying they don’t care what fans think. Lastly, despite good art, the show is a total mess and certainly not a love note to the originals. It is the Terminator Dark Fate, The Last Jedi, etc of the He-Man universe. Those who’ve seen it will know why those comparisons are relevant. Ridiculous. Add that he lied about it to it actually being even worse than people had exposed over a year ago and I can’t give this anything good. I’m giving a 1 because I notice there’s “positive review bombing” where perfect 10s are being given for some reason. That’s insane. Watch the 2002 show if you want more He-Man instead. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Animation is great and the first episode was amazing. Then it completely falls apart. They made a He-Man show without He-Man! What were they thinking!?!?! This was touted as a show made for the original fans. It is not. They made Teela the main character and since writers don't know how to write strong female leads anymore they resort to the usual 'strong wahmen' formula of making her extremely unlikable as she constantly berates everyone around her and is just a general all round b*tch. Side note for the writers, I hope somehow that you are reading this, Teelas constant rage at not being told who He-Man was is unjustified as even Adam's own Father didn't know he was He-man. I couldn't care less what they do next because there's no saving this dumpster fire of a show. Kevin Smith lied through his teeth about what this show is and completely buried what little of his credibility was left. The indie darling has truly become the Hollywood shill. What a shame. Expand

The voice acting was better than expected tho it did sound like some people were phoning it in. The problems lie in the storytelling. A continuation of the original series it is not (at least this first half season). Fans of the original will mostly agree on that. It feels more like someone read the coles notes and decided to change the characters for a more "modern audience". The 80's series was incredibly inclusive and this series decides to go in a "bold" new direction. Showrunner Kevin Smith decided that wasn't enough. He decided make it Teela and the Masters of the Universe after lying to the fanbase saying it would never go there. As a fan of the original and the 2002 reboot, I cannot endorse this. It will forever be He-Man and the MotU. Not Woke-Man or Teela. I'll give it at most a 2 just for the animation and certain voice actors. And now that I think of it, Cringer talked too much and too well so a 1. Overall, this series has not respected the original enough. Stop the constant retcon of origin stories (Prince Adam's lineage it offends more than it panders). We will see if it gets better over the season. Expand

But not only they openly lied in advertising and claimed it would be about character that dies/is removed and is about Teela not He-Man. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished watching the show earlier today...

Great animation. Mostly good voice acting (wasn't a huge fan of Sarah Michelle Gellar's voiceover skills). The battles and most of the character designs were very cool, but wow...
I think they missed the mark. This was absolutely as warned... Teela and the Masters of the Universe: Girl Power.

Teela's character design was too beefy, too... she was bigger than Adam, for crying out loud. They killed off way too many key characters and for very little reason, and just to hit the message home, they killed off He-Man, twice... Just in case you missed it the first time. And if it happens that Adam/He-Man actually isn't dead, there's no chance he can become He-Man without his sword, so again... the next story arc will have him relying on Teela, who apparently has magic of her own.

It literally reminded me of Finn trying to tell Rey that he, himself, actually had force powers, but he could never tell her, because something always interrupted him. Every time someone was going to reveal to Teela that she, too, had powers, she would interrupt them by saying something like "I don't want to hear it."

So, yeah... Part 2, I'm certain, will be Teela and the Masters of the Universe: Girl Power Part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's true to the 80's cartoon - same kind of campy, cornball trash. I was a fan as a kid, and this does the original justice. But sidelining the iconic hero to focus the series around Teela abandons the whole point of a nostalgic reboot in favor of canned, woke feminist schlock. Expand

Needless to say I was shocked within the 1st 5 minutes of the events that take place. I was excited having watched the trailers and build up for the show and generally ignored all the rumours. However having watched the first five episodes I am absolutely lost for words as to how the writers decided to take the direction they have with this. The trailer and marketing was all about He-man yet he is a side note as all the focus is on Teela, I can now understand the bait and switch a lot of fans are talking about. They are essentially writing He-man out of the world and the emphasis is more on that anyone can be the master of the universe as long as they say the words and hold the sword. The whole thing stinks of Social Agenda which whilst important in the world of politics and social debate should not intrude into ppls escapism. I don't want to come home after a long day and see my beloved childhood heroes, worlds and stories butchered and dissected and rearranged to fit some Social justice agenda. I will see how Part 2 goes but my prediction is that He-man being a white blonde haired male simply isn't allowed anymore. This phenomenon is becoming more and more prevalent in tv series and movies these days. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positive: -Awesome Animation -Good background for some characters like Orko -Good Voice Actors
Negative: The rest:
1-Masters of the Universe is about He-Man and his friends. Not in this series. The story centers on Teela, a hyper masculinized, selfish and Narcissistic character who doesn't care in the least about her father. 2-Kevin Smith lied to us again and again. He said Masters of The Universe: revelation is all about He-Man. And Teela is not the main Character. Lies. 3-Some characters are so different from their original versions that they are unrecognizable. He-Man is a naive and clumsy character. His father, King Randor, gets mad for no reason with his right hand Man-at-Arms and banishes him. Teela has lost her femininity, she behaves like a man and is selfish and Narcissistic. Hateful character
4-Not a single main male character leading this show.

It’s getting review bombed because it’s basically bait, throws the source material in the trash (super disrespectful), and instead of offering a modern look at healthy masculinity (since He-Man is to men what Barbie is for women) it just makes all the villains men, all the women are good and perfect, blah-blah-blah, you’ve heard it all before.
Those who made the series are digging their heels in, dismissing reviews as toxic, but this series doesn’t have the tone, character, spirit, etc of the original content. It’s not going to make you smile, it’s not going to lift your spirits.
(And just for the record, I would have scored this series much higher if it wasn’t a He-Man series. In many ways it is a good show, but not a good He-Man show.)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. He-Man is my childhood hero, right next to Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. Kevin Smith is among my most favourite people in Hollywood, I mean "Clerks" and "Dogma" - enough said. This should be as easy for me to watch and enjoy as it can be... and yet...

This show starts strong. All our heroes are there and they look better than ever! The designs are amazing and detailed, the animation is masterful, the voices fit the characters perfectly! The music is fantastic and fits the universe of He-Man as if it was always there. This show had everything it needed to succeed. But then there is the plot.

Many are saying that this show pushes the "strong female" too much. That is **** If anything, this show makes women seem illogical, stubborn and unempathetic. He-Man appears in the show for just a brief moment with the majority of the story dealing with interesting ideas, such as the world without He-Man or even the Power Sword. The balance between magic and technology is also mentioned. Sadly all those interesting topics are pushed out of mind for an uninspiring, poorly written Teela and her journey into stupidity. You see, at the start of the show Teela gets recognition and a promotion shortly before Castle Greyskull is attacked by the forces of Skeletor. He-Man dies protecting the castle and the universe. Teela finds out that Prince Adam was He-Man shortly before his death... and flips out. She just got promoted, before that she was just another soldier and while she was a friend, we all know why superheroes hide their identities. Teela however is angry in the childish temper tantrum kind of way. Then the show proceeds to dishonour Man-At-Arms, kill Orko and Roboto in the quest to restore the Power Sword. They even get Prince Adam back... only to kill him again. I will repeat - the main character, the icon of pop culture, the hero of my childhood dies twice in this show. This time making it blatantly clear that there's no coming back.

Now, I'm not mad about He-Man dying. The concept can be interesting and passing the torch to a new character can benefit all, us with a new story and the franchise by pushing new toys. But this was a senseless and disrespectful way to do this. Pushing Teela into a more proactive role is a good idea but again, it was executed poorly turning one of the fan-favourite characters into an angsty and blatantly stupid new main character. This new Teela isn't likeable or relatable, she's not a staple of female empowerment, in fact, she takes away from the role model that she should be. Acting like an entitled, petulant child without thought isn't a desirable trait at all.

The story, while having hints of an interesting direction, is filled with nothing but letdowns in the most important moments. The depth given to some characters isn't paid off in a satisfying manner at all. While Orko's death was heroic, it was at the hand of an enemy Teela defeated previously and now she was just standing there doing nothing. All the character development for Evil-Lyn was for nothing and had no payoff at all. If you need to sideline or kill off all male characters to make one, poorly written, Teela stand out then you are only stressing out how much less powerful, interesting and important she is... The point of the show was to give Teela more to do, to make her into another Wonder Woman, but Wonder Woman doesn't take away from Superman or Batman, she stands on equal footing with them. This show's idea of empowering Teela was to eliminate all other, more prominent, heroes! That's a terrible way of going about this!

This show is insulting. Insulting to the fans of the franchise. Insulting to the intelligence of the audience. Insulting to girls and women with how it presents them. I rate it 3/10 for music and animation quality. Other than that... this is a worse addition to this franchise than the 2002 attempt at bringing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe back.

Besides that, the main issue with the show is it is misandrist and the women characters would be considered toxic masculine if they were men. Men are presented as weak, dumb, extremely flawed, and bad while the women are righteous, smart, macho, arrogant, selfish, mean, and humorless, especially the Teela character. The original He-Man and She-Ra cartoons are nothing at all like this. They are much more light hearted. As everyone has noted, the main positive for it is the animation. The original series looks very dated visually but I highly recommend watching at least a few episodes if you haven't. They have a genuine 80s nostalgic charm to them and you can see how different they were compared to this one. Keep in mind the original show was meant for kids and to help sell the toy line associated with it. Expand
