The series should be called the adventures of Teela, He-Man does nothing but hinder and die, in addition the series falls into a forced and absurd inclusion, artificially changing the race to characters like King Grayskull, it would be better to create new characters from diverse races and not fall into that artificial inclusion. The only thing that saves me the series, is the animation quality. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is the target audiance here? I would not show that to my kids, becourse the message (of season 1 at least) is "the world is messed up and broken and don't try to fix it becourse you will mess it up even more and get people killed in the process". The message for fans of He-Man is basicly "your childhood hero is sh** and he deserves to die, twice". so that only leaves people who hated He-Man, but i don't think there are enough of those to merit a whole TV-Show.

There are some positives like the realy good animation style and i like most of the voiceacting.
But the whole melancolic theme is just to mutch, the ending left a foul feeling and i had to watch something funny just to bring me back up a bit.

The voices are recognizable actors/actresses. Thing is it's like they had a "list" of social agenda items that needed to be injected into the story. What's left isn't really a cohesive show or something even mildly enjoyable. I think I smiled briefly once or twice in only the first episode. Shaking my head the rest of the time. This really makes me wish show runners would work *purely on the enjoyment aspect of their craft rather than a scoreboard on how many points that can be achieved arbitrarily inserting their take on today's society. Also my humble suggestion - at all costs try to preserve at least the essence of the original show. In this case this show is not aimed at anyone from the original audience. Honestly, I don't know WHO it's supposed to be aimed at. It seems to me that the team was aiming at groups not at all interested in Masters of the Universe. Expand

In spite of all the rumors that it was a bait and switch I watched the first episode... and the rumors were 100% true. This is just another vehicle to push woke trash using the reanimated corpse of a once beloved franchise.

All the woke tropes are present - all men are bad or weak, women are strong and great at everything. Characters have completely different personalities relative to the original show; Teela who is the focus of the series is a whiny, entitled, smug feminist complete with shaved haircut.

At this point, we need to just give up on these people - Hollywood is compromised and has been for a long, long time. They don't want to tell good stories, they want to push woke dogma down our throats using whatever propaganda vehicles they can get their hands on.

I give it one point for the quality of the animation. The rest is trash. Not worth your time, or the cost of a Netflix subscription.

    So disappointing. But also predictable.

Sadly, there are almost no redeeming qualities in this dumpster fire. Even Skeletor is almost nowhere to be found. Teela, who is now the main character, is whiny and totally unlikable. All the MOTU characers are reduced to cameos or Teela sidekicks. The feminist tilt to the storytelling is present throughout. There really is almost nothing to like here.

The trailers were guilty of bait-and-switch, Kevin Smith blantantly lied (and burned up what little credibilty he had left, hope it was worth the paycheck), and this is not the MOTU any kind of fan wants to see.

Whoever came up with the idea of taking MOTU, with one of the more masculine heroes, and reducing the show to a woke a feminist mouthpeice, I hope they rot in hell.

The original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a show that existed to sell toys, but it was so well-done it created a fad with a cult following. It had great art, a really great rock soundtrack. It had limited stock animations and limited stock sounds but they were all good and evocative.

This show was marketed at old-school fans. The only thing better than the original is the animation, but the things being animated are worse. The new characters are less attractive, and the soundtrack, both effects and music is bland.

In the first episode a number of things happen, Teela becomes the lead character. He-man is only in flashbacks thereafter except Prince Adam is in the 5th episode. Unfortunately, this is not the beautiful, capable Teela of the 1980s. This is a nasty, petty, sulky, narcissistic, physically and morally unattractive version of Teela who acts like a spoiled teenager even when the world is in danger.

Without spoilers, this is a story that tries so hard to be woke, but cannot even accomplish that. The patronising minority characters are patronising caricatures.

Beloved major characters are killed, and the ones who survive are twisted until they are contemptible.

This is not something that will appeal to fans of the original series. It is not entirely clear who else it would appeal to. 1 point for the animation, and nothing for anything else.

    Avoid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horrible. First off, the series does not develop any of the backstory about any of the characters in the series, but rather throws you face-first into He-Man suddenly dying in the first episode. So, new viewers cannot figure out who any of the characters are or why they are important, but rather expects the viewers to ALREADY know the backstory about He-Man. Second, it was apparently obvious from the get-go that this series was animated by the same studio that animated he Castlevania series on Netflix; there is NO differentiation in drawing styles or animation, and if one did not know any better, they could assume this was some sort of sequel to the Castlevania series. Heck, even the whip-like animations were complete copy/pasted of example animations from Castlevania! This just REEKS of laziness!

Also, for those expecting this series to have a tie-in with the She-Ra series on Netflix ... it isn't going to! It's clear from the start that besides one reference to the Horde (referenced in a way that makes it seem like a different group than the Horde from She-Ra), this series has absolutely no connections to She-Ra, which is entirely non-canon.

I don't know what audience this series is geared towards, and I'll probably never know I HOPE there is NO season 2. As someone who has watched the entire series of both She-Ra and Castlevania on Netflix, this series looks like some sort of pathetic cash grab by whoever took part in its creation and does not deserve a season 2. This series should disappear as some sort of He-Man non-canon fan series, and should be rebooted IMMEDIATELY by the production teams that took part in developing the She-Ra series on Netflix. If the latter doesn't happen, here's hoping this He-Man series gets canceled and disappears into obscurity so fans can pretend this series never existed.

First off you will NEVER encounter a better voice cast for anything related to He Man. They even got Henry Rollins to be a very calm and persuasive individual for crying out loud. All of the voice work is top notch.

The writing isnt terrible. The story is more or less decent. We have all sat through worse. Some characters were really well done in fact. Like Orko surprisingly.

Then the bad creeps in and takes over.

First off, Even if they are breaking a season into 2 segments, 5 episodes is pretty light.

Also the animation looks OK. Definitely not great. It looks like an anime from 2010 give or take.

Then there is the elephant in the room. Yes, the show has a Teela problem. That is why it was smart to not have He-Man in the title. Masters of the Universe was the logical way of getting around what they knew they were doing.

It drips with SJW influence from beginning to end. Do they craft a good story despite that? More or less. That said you cannot escape it because you get reminders of it in every episode. Even then it still fails the whole Bechtal test given the gaping absence built into the plot that effectively becomes a Magguffin.

Its clearly bending over backwards to take something viewed as embodiment of masculinity and does its best to curb stomp it and disregard the target demographic, the lore of the story or anything else relevant about it.

Conclusion: The voice cast and more dark nature of this story goes exceedingly far to make up for all that is wrong with it. I still have to deduct 5 points just for the SJW agenda being pushed. Another point for the behind the curve anime. Leaving it at a 4. Had it not been for that agenda which is a completely avoidable problem, this would have been between a 9-10 for me.

So hope it was worth it alienating the target demographic for this. Whos to say we will even see the second half given how terrible the reviews have been. I feel my grade is quite forgiving for just how bad it actually is.

Sadly, you brought this on yourself.

EDIT: After seeing the second half of Season 1 I had to come back and update this review.

    It got SOOO much worse.

While the first half had at least a glimmer of potential, the second half ruins it all. The overall production is still good but the writing is a literal abomination. It misses the point, It actively spits in the face of the franchise, and leaves a stain on the franchise that will take quite a lot of effort to undo.

There is no way Smith actually had any involvement with this because this is literally the most misandrist garbage ever animated.

There COULD have been room to elevate women in this franchise, this was NOT the way to do it because it effectively became fem centric sexist in the process.

Originally scored for the first half a 4. Reducing that down to a 1 because it amplifies everything wrong with the first half.

Still have to give some score for the quality of animation and the voice cast which was top notch. The writing is as stated before an absolute abomination and someone needs to be held accountable for this.

All elements are of epic proportions in this Conan-Star Wars hybrid world of Masters of the Universe, based on the best-selling line of children’s toys. Epitome of Good takes on Epitome of Evil for nothing less than the future of the Universe, and the result is a colossal bore.

Kevin Smith's He-Man is an impressive physical specimen, the ultimate warrior epitomizing all that is good and defending the honor of inhabitants of the planet Eternia. Sadly he is side-lined early along with most other major characters so that we can focus on heroine and former friend Teela. On the dark side is the hideous Skeletor (voiced by Mark Hamil no less). He too is absent for the bulk of these five episodes after he defeats the Sorceress of Greyskull Castle and destroys it in the opening episode, sucking all the magic out of Eternia, and the show as well. The next four episodes aren't interested in He-Man and Skeletor and tell an altogether different story.

Turns out the battle to control the future of universal power took its toll on one Eternian more than any other, Teela--star of the original cartoon who appeared fighting alongside with He-Man in every episode. Smith's Teela was never told He-Man's alter-ego was her friend Prince Adam and when she finds out in the first episode she gives up on her friends, the Palace life, her new title as Man (Mistress?)-At-Arms, and sets off to find herself and leave the lies behind.

We then catch up with Teela and her sole friend (or is there more to this relationship? Smith is too afraid to say despite saying himself that this material is written for adults) after a long time jump. Eternia is in bad shape as magic is drying up after the destruction of Castle Greyskull. Teela seems content to spend the rest of her life away from everything Masters of the Universe, until she's asked by a mysterious old woman to retrieve a long lost talisman and off we go on a new adventure.

An adventure with no strong male characters, terrible dialogue, horrendous plotting and some very bad vocal performances from a cast that has done better. Sarah Michelle Geller of "Buffy" fame falters in particular as Teela, turning the iconic and kind heroine into a grim miser who seemingly hates everyone in her past. The Slayer's performance as Teela is grating.

Masters of the Universe, like G.I. Joe, Marvel and DC Comics has a surprisingly deep roster of colorful characters beloved by many. Dumping on all of them and then dumping them aside for "The Teela Show" could have worked, but, not with these scripts and this cast. Just because something can be done though, doesn't mean it should. Netflix's "Masters of the Universe: Revelation" is horrible missed opportunity. Why was everything interesting thrown aside?

The animation by Powerhouse Studious is fine, although nothing to write home to Bob K. or Bill Clampett about. Some of the character models are excellent and some are an excellent example in what not to do.

If you've never checked out He-Man and the Masters of the Universe just about any other iteration would serve you better. If you're a fan of the old show, avoid this at all costs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe that Kevin Smith has specially collected all the most terrible cliches of the last ten years in one cartoon to show how much he and similar media personalities are c*****d and subordinate to the modern agenda. A stupid drain and the murder of the original hero at the very beginning, as in "Dark Fates". Tincreasing the level of stupidity of the universe and lore for the sake of the agenda, as in the new "Star Wars". Rethinking the characters of other characters in accordance with the modern agenda, as in the same Dark Fate. Adding LGBT and poking them right in the face is just like in Princess Shi-Ra, which happens in the same universe as He-man. Well, the deception of fans, in order to play on nostalgia, as in all such projects. And if Cameron, perhaps, really took off Dark Fate, so that they would already left him alone, and that the viewer would never see another ignoramus rape the Terminator in his life, then fat Kevin is really sure that his "joke" was really cool. Well don`t be mislead by the 1st 20 minutes of this show, after He-Man sacrifices himself everything goes down the hill. Teela represents everything that is wrong with female leads these days, she is just a "boy wanna be" with a fancy hair cut, that hates everyone. The second episode is so bad that I skipped.
The last episode you think, yeah, I survived this pile of garbage, I will get something good... He-Man is back... They manage to destroy everything again.
In the end people like me, and many others, were just used, the same way we have been used by the new Start Wars trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You've heard enough about woke pandering and blatant lying from PR and personally Kevin Smith, so I want to say another thing. This show is just BAD. Animation is mediocre and not even close to Castlevania levels. But the writing by Smith is just pathetic. The grand revelation from the first episode is that Castle Grayskull is not a center of magic, but a hologram skin, that has... just a differently designed castle with another name and the same role. That is a level of epic "revelations" here, people. And the reaction "YOU ALL LIARS!" from Teela after hearing about Adam's secret... that is the cliche that all the worst CW shows base all their drama upon constantly. Not surprising from a fan of CW shows, but painfully unoriginal and cringe non the less.

I'll always love Dogma, but it's been quite a while since Kevin did anything worthwhile as aa writer. And that show is as bad as all his newest works. Only here he also managed to sell out his fans.

Teela is an unlikable, whiny mentally weak B. I might have bought Teela hooking up with the mcguffin better than any man chick if it was as a result of seeing the love of your life die, but no it is because her little tender feelings were hurt. And don't give me that they aren't together...they clearly are. He-Man/Adam is turned into a joke. Man-at-Arms is tossed to the side like an old dishrag. And the voice acting just doesn't work. I don't want Joke-e-tor. I don't want linguist Mer-Man. I don't want chipper cheerleader voice for petty bitter selfish Teela-ish character. I don't want political commentary. I just wanted a fun action cartoon. The concept for the show has some merit on its face value, but the execution is pathetic. The best description I can think of is "This is a show for people unfamiliar with the lore by people who hate the lore." Add the blatant lying of Kevin Smith and the Bait and Switch advertising and you get a trainwreck waiting to happen. Shame on Mr. Smith for attacking people reporting what we now know are totally accurate rumors. Shame for lying about loving He-Man when it has been shown that in the past you repeatedly put out there that you didn't like the character or show. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's kinda hard to judge this show. Not for me, subjectively, but objectively. If I strip myself of all my childhood knowledge of the show(s), toys, comic books, etc: SPOILERS AHEAD

It has great animation, good score, good VAs. As a story it seems pretty okay (but it depends since it ends on a cliffhanger). One big note: As a white, straight man who likes Buffy and He-Man: It's WEIRD to cast SMG as Teela, the actually protagonist of the show, who's a strong female lead, and have her be that.. whiny? Buhu you never told me your secret, but others knew, so screw that your sacrifice, screw my father, screw all the innocent people and my jobb. My feelings. If this is your idea of a strong independent female warrior: you're self-identifying, because she acts like a petulant teenager. Thankfully this gets better as the story progresses, but it seems very out of character and ruins the character a bit. It feels fake, just to give the character a "development storyline", which ironically makes her seem less developed. All in all, if you have no connections to the MotU-franchise, you like somewhat darker retro-80s fantasy, it's a pretty okay watch. There's also some other weird character takes. King Randor just exiles Duncan because He-Man died and he knew his identity. No reaction to Marlena. Marlena doesn't even stand up for Duncan. Their loyal servant and friend for years. It just seems to be a bad setup to split everyone up.

Npw on to why I rate it poorly. I grew up watching the show since it started airing. And the sequel shows. Had the toys. Read the comics. I'm also an evil incel that hates women. Probably why I watched and loved Buffy starring the main characters voice actor. Now without knowing how part 2 will be. This show is essentially like if they said they were going to have a sequel to Buffy called the Scooby-gang. All the promos had tons of footage focusing on Buffy fighting the Big Bad. Fans gets news of the fact that Buffy will barely be in the show. Xander is the main character. Joss Whedon quickly quells these toxic fans, calls them liars. Promises the show will have plenty of Buffy. Show airs. Xander is the main character. Buffy is thrown aside. Xander and Spike heartfully talk about how Buff was not all that, not the real force to be reckoned with. This is essentially what this show is, just with Buffy characters swapped in.

IF Smith had said "yeah nah dawg this show won't focus much on He-man, it's mainly going to focus on Teela and some other of the Masters". Fine. Some would have called Smith a woke knee-bender, and others would have thought "oh cool, I know not to expect a He-man centered show, I'll give it a watch".

But Smith didn't. He claimed the rumours about the show featuring little focus on He-man, and that Teela was the main character was a lie. He bashed the source of those rumours and "toxic fans". The trailer was heavily He-man and Skeletor focused (it seems like the trailer is actually 95% of all the screen time they have across the 5 episodes).

Kevin Smith lied, while backing a very misleading trailer, and called people who we know spoke the truth, liars.

Who's toxic and who's a liar? This shows main writer. That's why I can't give this misleading series a good score, and why I don't trust it'll get better in part 2. Kevin Smith doesn't even like He-man.

TLDR: If you don't have any ties with the MotU-franchise. It's a 3/5 star show.
If you do. Don't expect He-man, or the magic of the 80s. It's possible to update and evolve a show while still remaining loyal to the fans of the original. Kevin Smith didn't and doesn't even like He-man. This is just a stepping stone because he wants bigger gigs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A "He-Man" show that Smith swore, repeatedly, was not about Teela... is ALL about Teela lol. Only 5 episodes but Smith manages to emasculate and kill He-Man TWICE. Along with any other male lead.

    VOICES:
Mark Hamill voices Skeletor, poorly, as he sounds EXACTLY like the Joker. Sarah Michelle Gellar gives a valley girl voice to one of the most butch female leads I've ever seen (Teela) and makes an unlikeable, entitled character even worse.

Lena Heady is the standout here as she nails the tone and attitude of her charcater perfectly. Whoever does He-Man does well, but he's barely in this "season" so its a non-issue. John Erwin is still the king of yelling "I have the poweeeeeeer!" while the new guy does a "I have....... THE POWER!" Eh.

The other voices are done well enough but longtime fans will miss Alan Oppenheimers gargle-y version of Mer-Man.

    VISUALS/ART:
Done well, but either at the request of Mattel, Netflix or both, every female in this show has large man arms and other masculine features. Its as funny as it is distracting. Teela sports an activist haircut through the show (what fun!), large shoulders/arms/legs to the point that if they hadn't given her feminine eyes and lips, you wouldn't be able to tell it was supposed to be a woman.

They classify this as "Anime" but thats almost blasphemy imo. Anime knows how to draw strong, genre leading females without making them into men. Animation is subpar compared to Castlevania too.

    STORY:
This is where it falls apart. He-Man dies in Ep 1 and this idea could have worked, except no one on Eternia gives a flying *#$! about prince Adam. He sacrifices himself to save the universe and reveals his secret to Teela in the process. And that's where Adam #$%^ up,

See, you can't lie to Teela. She's a strong, independent woman, entitled to everything you have and or know (wait until she finds out who her mom is! Lol). "Eternias Champion" as the king calls him, doesn't even get a memorial service as the people celebrate Skeletors defeat (Attention Eternia: your champion is dead, show some respect).

Adams parents grieve, Duncan is shamed and threatened with execution (but not the Sorceress, who also knew Adams secret, oddly). Teela doesn't care that Adam is dead, that her father is under threat of death, that Adams parents are in mourning. No, she was lied to, so she abandons her king and queen, her father, her friends, her career, her duty, her family, EVERYTHING. Talk about temper tantrums. I laughed for a solid minute when I saw this scene, its so surreal.

Teela gets an activist haircut, a girlfriend (it is HEAVILY implied) and becomes a merc. Magic is leaving Eternia and if they can't stop it, everything ends. This is the FLAW.

Had there been a "We need Adam back, we need He-Man to fix this" and the show was about bringing the iconic hero back, it would have worked. As it is, its all about Teela and her quest to repair the sword. They even find Adam in Preternia (crappy Heaven) and they're like "hey, we need the sword half... okay thanks, bye" and Adam basically has to force his way back into Teelas story. Nobody cared, needed or wanted him back, so why should the audience?

Theres a bunch of plot holes and broken ideas (If the sword is the source of power and its halves are in "Heaven" and "Hell", how is a new champion supposed to rise????)

EDIT: I keep forgetting Andrea and Grayskull (the very literal ancestor of Adam) were both race swapped. So brave and stunning Netflix!

At least Kevin Smith got a paycheck because he, Mattel and Netflix don't seem to give a crap one way or the other.

    IN CONCLUSION
Another woke, soulless, corporate designed Netflix "Original". At least this "season" was mercifully short.

This is the worst reboot ever.
Total bait and switch with the main character. An spit on the face of real fans of the original series.

I want to see He-Man **** **** up! , not some story of a side character drama queen. I couldn't give to ****s about Teela's story. I loved He-Man as a boy, but this is not good ol' cheese He-Man I'm sorry.

Absolutely abhorrent. It's clearly a bait&switch. He man is front and center in all the merchandise, but in the show he is sidelined and everything revolves about Teela, who no one cares about.

En serio Netfñix???? Todo lo que toca lo destruye, ahora, saber que Netflix se hará cargo de alguna franquicia ya establecida es dar por sentado que será un mal resultado.

El titulo de la serie esta mal... SHE-MAN sería el correcto... SHE-MAN sería el correcto... It may take a little while to fully get into what Masters of the Universe: Revelation is doing if you are not already familiar with the franchise. But whether you're a longtime fan or just hungry for a unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy, this show offers an exhilarating adventure that justifies the era of the legacyquel, while proving itself a necessary and essential part of the Masters of the Universe mythos.

Smith eschews his normally wordy dialogue style, but keeps the characters smart and real, which helps us want to follow all of them as they go on their journey. He also hews closely to the convoluted world that is Eternia, where there’s layer upon layer of intrigue and mysticism that needs to be restored or captured. The animation is an upgraded version of the ’80s Filmation style the original show had, but with just enough retro touches to keep the show connected to its predecessor.

For those expecting something truly boundary-pushing, rest assured, no one will confuse this with "Clerks."
