Very slow but impactful first season. Ptsd is given nuance when a super hero battles with the trauma of an abusive relationship. David Tenant is fantastic and terrifying as the psychopathic Killgrave. It's noir atmosphere hinders some of the pacing but delivers more chills if you're willing to commit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jessica Jones season 1 takes us on a journey with one of the most troubled characters that we’ve been introduced to yet in the Marvel universe. Season 1 has a very dark and gloomy feel to it but this feel works immensely to the show’s benefit. The dialogue and story give us an in depth look at how Jones’s experience in the past have created her pain and trauma in the present. We also get to see how she reacts to that pain and trauma and how they influence her relationships with other people. Overall the acting of the season is very good; every substantial actor plays their part to perfection and helps to create a very adult feel for the season. This is a Marvel show that is intended for mature audiences and not for kids since there are very troubling themes that are core to the season. This is also a great example of a season that has a bunch of actors who we haven’t seen too much of prior to the season and gives them screen time and moments to shine so they can showcase their talent as actors. David Tennant’s Kilgrave is a scary villain who really amplifies the dark, gloomy and traumatic feel to this season. His ability is one of the most intimidating we’ve seen and Tennant does a fantastic job making Kilgrave an anxiety building villain for both viewers and Jones. Kilgrave is to this season was Fisk was to season 1 of Daredevil, although Fisk is a slightly better villain since he doesn’t have any inherent abilities. One thing I also like about this season is that Jones has issues that a lot of people can relate to, but she isn’t a character who you want to be able to relate to. This season is the embodiment of a troubled and trauma-based life seen through the lens of someone with superpowers, and even those superpowers don’t really help Jones cope with her past and deal with her pain. This is a season that you have to prepare yourself for, but once you’re ready, you’ll watch one of the most mature and well-executed Netflix shows that Marvel has made to date. Expand

The first season is the best because it has a very interesting and unique villain played by the extremely talented David Tennant. Excellent story and twists. Season one Jessica Jones is top-notch quality. If it isn't better than Daredevil, it's on par with it.

Jessica Jones (not unexpectedly) has a lot in common with Daredevil, Netflix first Marvel collaboration, with both going down darker routes than the cinematic movies have generally taken. Towards the latter half of the season I felt there were a couple of episodes that went round in circles a little bit, but overall it was very entertaining and Kilgrave (David Tennant) made for a great antagonist. At a push I'd even say I just about preferred it to Daredevil's first season, which itself was very good.

Unfortunately, despite being well acted, the villain isn't very interesting either.

In the end, it's little more than a Roadrunner cartoon with the protagonist filling in as the coyote. Failing to catch her prey mostly by getting in her own way. The show could have been saved if Jessica and everyone else who knows about the villain had been written as too stupid to realize that a handgun and head phones would have been more than enough to deal with her antagonist.

The first two to three episodes are interesting, dark, have some excellent use of soundtrack and set up some cool characters, including Jessica Jones, Kilgrave and Malcolm Ducasse who are all fantastic. Those characters or their actors Krysten Ritter, David Tennant and Eka Darville basically carry the show, and their performances are brilliant. Then it's all downhill. We're greeted to Trish Walker and Will Simpson who both suck and their relationship thing which sucked too.

The rest of the season ranges from fantastic to obvious filler, and while it didn't hurt the pacing as bad as it did in Daredevil season 2, it was still frustrating at points and hurt the tension that the show created especially in scenes with Jessica Jones and Kilgrave together.
Somewhere deep there's an excellent show, there's even a Kendrick Lamar reference! But it's brought down by moments or even a full episode of just explaining stuff and some of those "how convenient" moments to simply make the story longer. If Marvel stopped with the 13 episode rule, Jessica Jones could've shined, because it's seriously good every time it actually moves forward, oh and when it doesn't show Will Simpson and Trish Walker.

The second character in Marvel's Defenders series is Jessica Jones. A no non-sense private detective with super strength, who helps who she wants, does what she wants, and seems to bring trouble wherever she goes.

Krysten Ritter stars as Jessica Jones, and from an entertainment stand point she does a terrific job with the character, the problem is how likeable is Jessica Jones? This was my issue with this series all along. There is no doubt that in the last decade, Marvel has made leaps and bounds in both it's writing and character development. I even believe that the Defenders will challenge the Avengers in both content and popularity, still I just don't like Jessica Jones.

It's hard to give specific reasons without spoilers, but when I think Jessica Jones the one word that comes to mind is **** She's supposed to be the good guy, the one you root for, but she always has this attitude and everything is an issue with her. She's a mess, the people she spends her time with are a mess, and she seems like easy picking for the villain who chose to pray on her mind.

The whole point of a superhero is to help people and to have people behind you and your brand of vigilante justice, but she seems to hurt more people than she helps, just look at what she did to Luke Cage (Mike Colter). Maybe others will feel differently, but I don't like the main character and therefore don't approve of the show. I love Luke Cage and I really like the idea of having a self-narrating private investigator, but there is this whole negative energy that surrounds her and everything she does, that I just can't get passed.

I do love Daredevil and Luke Cage, I'll probably check out Iron Fist and I definitely will be watching the Defenders, so I guess I kind of have to watch season 2 of Jessica Jones, but fans of the show have a long wait ahead of them, as Netflix has confirmed that it won't be released until sometime in 2018, after season 1 of The Defenders.

Finally a super-hero series for adults. And by "for adults" I did not mean full of fanservice nor full of unnecessary violence but I mean mature theme, good acting, grim, good action, good villain. Nice job.
I'm not familiar with the original comic book character so I can't compare.

Krysten Ritter is probably Emmy nomination worthy for her performance in this series. She brings an immense amount of depth and the whole show is essentially a metaphor for rape victims.

Jessica Jones is surrounded by a cast of great characters including her best friend Trish who has a lot of her own issues and is a very compelling and likeable character. Her neighbour Malcolm who undergoes a huge transformation over the course of the series and may be my favorite character in the whole show. Then finally you have the classic Marvel character Luke Cage, who becomes an ally of Jones’ despite some effect that she has on his personal life. Mike Colter gets a lot of time to shine as Cage and we will finally get a bigger taste of him when Luke Cage comes to Netflix.
David Tennant makes a huge impact as Killgrave. The main villain who has a history with Jessica. Killgrave is an easy character to hate and Tennant takes control of the audience when he appears. The only issue that I have with Killgrave that his mind control powers made him hard to write and in order to get him and Jessica in a room together they had to make his character a bit more convenient to the plot. There are a few times where the series feels like it is throwing unnesessary characters into the plot in order to fill the 13 episode run time. I feel as though this season would’ve worked even better in 8 episodes instead of trying to drag the story out into 13. Its still a great show though and you don’t have to be a Marvel fan to like it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Show starts strong, but after characters get introduced never gets into story mode. Reminded me of Charmed or something generic like that. Almost as draggy as that one in any case. Acting wise it's OK, but it tries to hide the fact that it's a rather tame series by making it far grittier than it in reality is or allows itself to be.

    Spoilers ahead:

My main criticism is about the quality of writing. I don't really see any. For example the entire series revolves around the premise that Jones is cynical and dark and doesn't care for people. But in fact all of her actions scream the opposite. Rather than working this out, we get served a main character that is unconvincingly harsh. So the usual brooding, misunderstood antihero tropes are tumbling out of the screenwriter's handbook. Case in point is the idea that the antagonist is to be captured alive because of the fate of some random victim of his. A thoroughly unconvincing motive, especially when all the others die by the numbers. And don't get me started on the quasi scifi technobabble they come up with as an explanation for their powers. Marvel never really convinced in that aspect; they seem to have let go completely of any standards in this regard.

The strong push from Marvel into revitalising the practically dead genre of film-noir is taken up again in this show as we follow a private detective with retired super hero with superpowers who's actively avoiding using them. With acting that is superb across the board but with particular attention to David Tennant as the Purple Man, this show keeps everything tight and personal. With themes centred around a lacking person agency and rape, there was a risk that this show would be overly depressing, but it actually maintains a strong wit that while it doesn't always land right, keeps some levity in the show. The atmosphere feels like smoke though and at it's height this show is supremely tense and amazingly uncomfortable in all the right ways. A different approach that Daredevil and perhaps a little less consistent but in every way worthy of standing alongside it, and in some scenes it even surpasses it for shear atmosphere and tone. There is a great episode in the middle of the series, which explores the psychology and philosophy behind both characters and plot. This one episode is the only episode I can really recommend. The build up to this episode is stretched too long, and the final episodes are awfully inconsistent. The writers even fail to maintain the realism of the everyday world, and the characters begin to fall apart and act hypocritically.

The concept was a promising one, and some episodes show promise - but often, the conclusion is an explosion and a lot of mindless violence. I cannot understand why this has been so well received.

Provided they are lucky enough to survive that is. With some better pacing and some shaping up of some awkward elements and Marvel could have had one of their best superhero offerings yet. As it stands what we have is a solid second look into the darker side of the MCU.

What I mean when I say the show has some awkwardness to it, it's just that not everything comes together in a completely flawless way. Stretching the show out for 13, hour long episodes lead to some very slow pacing. You'll still get to see some cool and often dark moments on a semi-regular basis, but there are episodes that can just be dull. There are plenty of times they could have pushed this conflict forward to a more satisfying conclusion then what was offered.

Yet, it's the complexity that kept me watching even when things got dull. Jessica Jones is a hero with a lot of layers. A lot them connected to the villain in some really deranged ways. The show doesn't skip out on mature topics like rape and psychological damage. They, along with the at times bloody violence, are what continue to separate the MCU movies from the shows.

That being said it sometimes goofs up with the "mature" elements. Early on the show tries so hard to show a messed up and more adult side of the MCU by pushing gross sexual fetishes into the light like incest. That's pretty sick, but the way it's handled here makes it all the worse. The show presents them as attempts to be funny. It ends up having the opposite effect. It's a really immature way to present "mature" content.

Yet, as it continues on and finds more of a footing with it's plot the show gets a better grip on what genuine maturity is. It's not just blood, cursing, and violence. It's the nature of the characters.

Even the side-characters have their depth and little layers to peel back. It's just a shame they aren't more interesting. The supporting cast just really isn't that interesting here. Even Jones' sister/best friend who plays a huge role in the show suffers from a case of blandness. It has nothing to do with their actors. The entire cast is fantastic. Yet, the only characters onscreen worth caring about are Luke Cage (I can't wait for his show), Kilgrave (the show's villain), and Jones herself.

There is one pretty big issue with Jones though, and that's Krysten Ritter. Now don't get me wrong I am in now way saying she's a bad actress. The woman is phenomenal. I just don't think she was the right choice for the character. She hardly seems like the hard-drinking chick that you don't want to mess with that the show portrays her character as. She sure does try her hardest though so I have to give her credit. She's definitely on board, but some of these lines just don't feel believable coming from Ritter at all.

To be honest I think the reason she was picked is because of her chemistry with Mike Colter (Luke Cage). The moments she shares with him onscreen are the only moments I was 100% sold on Ritter playing Jones. These do are magic together onscreen and completely sell the romance part of the show. If only, they could sell the fight scenes.

The action is a bit sloppy with the exception of a spectacular fight between Jones and another similarly powered character that I won't spoil here. It's almost like the director(s) couldn't quite figure out how to deliver super strength fueled fights on their budget. It leads to action scenes that are either weak or overly choreographed, giving them a fake look and feel.

Truth be told Jessica Jones has a lot of issues. However the good it does do will keep you watching throughout it's 13 episodes. The pace may drag and it's not always the most flawlessly put together show, but it makes up for it with a fantastic villain that connects to our lead in direct, meaningful, and dark ways. Mix that with the complexity of the character and you have another enjoyable work by Marvel, even if it is among their most flawed.

My total score for the first season is a 7.1/10

    Miscast and unconvincing character.

I feel like a bad person for writing this review about Jessica Jones because my daughter liked the show and recommended it. I feel like a bad person for writing this review about Jessica Jones because my daughter liked the show and recommended it. This made me watch the first episode, but I don't quite share her experience. Granted for a marvel setting it is tolerable show because Jessica's superpowers are downplayed: she is more human than superhuman, so to speak. However, I just fail to share the fascination for superheroes given that normal people, with all their frailties, are far more heroic in my eyes. The only superhero themed movie that I recall to like is Birdman precisely because it isn't exactly about superheroism.

My problem with Jessica Jones isn't that she is a superhero, but that she is supposed to be a private eye. A film noir kind of PI to be more precise. This puts her in the same group of people as, say, V. I. Warshawski or Kinsey Millhone, the latter not exactly a noir PI.

Jessica gets introduced with an overvoice suggesting an experienced PI who has seen it all, while she runs around half the time with tear stained doe-eyes looking more like a victim on the run than an investigator on the prowl. So I can't quite make the leap that sees Ritter turn into the hardboiled PI Jessica is supposed to be. Ritter is a very pretty young woman who makes a totally unbelievable tough chick with a vulnerable side. The one is not the other.
The problem gets compounded by attributing her all the staple noir trappings. She drinks heavily, but doesn't suffer much for it; has no friends to speak off, so she claims; can't get into any stable relationships, she has non at the start and we are served a hugely embarrassing sex scene with Luke Cage halfway into the first episode, where Jessica is totally pissed during their bout; and is a loner because of her super hero affliction and her bad experience with the main villain. And of course she can't get along with the police and badmouths her occasional employer Hogarth and non friend Walker, because that is what she has to do.
This might be needed for a comic aimed mostly at imagery and with little room for complexity, but something better can be expected for a television series that allows for more depth. If Jessica is a hard boiled detective with a soft side, make her look and behave the part. If you drink a lot, you get to suffer for it: you can get off, you get a hang over and look and feel like **** the next day. You don't look like Ritter does: attractive and energetic. It needs to be made believable.
My advise would be to take a look at Kinsey Millhone who makes a far more convincing PI than Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones does. It might not be noir, but at least she is a more original character with a more believable personality and background..

I give it a five also because it irks me that a lesbian relation is shown in the context of adultery. You can't resist equating a LGTB relation with immorality, can't you?

Her actual powers are never really delved into (she possesses a high degree of strength, but not Captain America or Spider-Man level, and she can jump pretty high, but that seems to be just about it), so the show focusses more on her as a character.
The upside is that we see a flawed, mysogynistic, aggressive, alcohol dependant, borderline sociopath. The downside is that it gets tired very quickly, as the whole 'anti-hero' vibe has been done to death.

As the series progresses we get a look into JJ's past, and her experiences with the main villain (adding a level of welcome subtext), but ultimately it doesn't pay off, and it concludes in a very anticlimactic way.

I guess my main problem is that the show doesn't know what it wants to be. There are some great ideas, and the actual cinematography, direction and the 'look' is gritty and full of grime and dirt. But despite it having some very adult themes, some scenes of sex, some of violence, it doesn't really run with the 'made for grown-ups' ball.
No swearing, no nudity, no inherent racism or xenophobia. It paints a dark picture, creates dark characters, but then has them actually exist in a world where profanity and drug use in an inner-city environment don't exist.
I think the show would have worked much better if they'd gone straight for the full 'M' rating and pushed the boat out on tailoring it for adults.

Ritter does a great job of portraying a woman who's basically wrecked her life due to guilt, boozing, pushing everyone away etc. and slowly moving back towards 'normality' David Tennant however, absolutely steals the show, particularly from the mid-season point thereon: achieving one of the best 'villan' performances i've seen since 'The Wire', where you manage simultaneously to hate him and feel sympathy, sometimes within seconds. This would have been a 10 for me, but actually the poor showcasing of powers (Luke / Jessica), and mixed pacing especially early on in the season knocks it down a little. Still solid viewing, and I hope they produce another season with some of the lessons learned i.e. you can take your time to 'build' but you really need to hit your stride by the 3rd/4th episode, and there's no excuse for not even having a single 'super-strength' showcase moment until the last 1/4 of the season. The main protagonist isn't just a baddie; he’s extremely understandable — even though he wont surpass the incredible Wilson Fisk-character in DD due to some vague character motivations. JJ is a splendid, somewhat depressing and highly original show. Sure; It’s not that action-packed, it’s more dialog-driven (!), and it might not fit everyone, because it can be a bit slow (& contain some plot holes). But it certainly did work for me. Add incredible & fearful fight-scenes, and much subplots to this superhero/detective flick; well that’s Jessica Jones.

It eschews the typical TV PI setup (one episode, one case) for a single long-running case that just doesn't have a lot of steam in it. By episode five they've cornered the villain, and then

This show reminds me of the Will Smith movie “Hancock.”

Truth be known I would rather have seen a TV version of “Hancock” than this show; which I did watch several episodes but finally gave up because the stories were boring and acting inferior to what I had expected.

Poor dialoguess, poor script. The characters are dumb. I wanted to stop seeing in the middle of the serie.

Comparing to other series and movies from the marvel universe, Jessica Jones is far behind

    Definetly a waste of time.

Honestly, I don't get the hype. I watched the pilot, and trust me, it had a boring lead character, an okay villain, and not much a plot. It had sex scenes, I'll give it that, but not much else.

"Jessica Jones" is my new favorite Marvel adaptation. Krysten Ritter does an excellent job of making us feel Jessica's pain. She's a superhero but is helpless when it comes to Kevin Kilgrave (ie the Purple Man).. David Tennant is at the top of his game in this role. I initially thought Kevin's mind controlling power was lame but quickly changed my mind (no pun intended). Being able to mentally control anyone/everyone may be the scariest power of all.

The setting is gritty. "Jessica Jones" like 'Daredevil" takes place in Hell's Kitchen. The fight scenes are fun. The story line is a bit slow at times but I'm willing to overlook that. The supporting cast is great. Rachael Taylor is a standout as Trish/Patsy Walker who is Jessica's BFF. I hope we see lots more of her in season 2. Also keep an eye out for the Luke Cage (Mike Colter) spinoff soon.

Kudos to Netflix/Marvel for adding another female lead. While SuperGirl and Agent Peggy Carter are cute and perky, Jessica gives us someone we can relate to who just happens to save the world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show was a little dissapointing. Especially having recently seen Netflix' Daredevil, and expecting equal quality from their other Marvel offering.

In my opinion there were too many parts of the story that just felt off to me. The 'deducted' way to deal with the villain is to use a medicine to drug him and make him pass out..... which could be done by her just simply hitting him with her superhuman strength. Or you know, just put in some ear plugs so you can't hear him (it took these characters 13 episodes to come up with that one in the end scene)

She needs more victims to testify and prove the villain exists in a court of law; she finds herself in a house with multiple victims and a police man (!) yet after the fight is over she lets them all go with a pat on the back. And since she already had said police man on her side, why abduct another one to act as a witness to the villain's power later on?

The entire time we are shown examples of her superhuman strength, yet when a group of men attack her to free the villain they just caught, she hits them but they don't stay down. Maybe she should have caught him the other times she just stalked him and did nothing but watch. Then again the villain is caught and escapes at least 3 times in the course of this season, so he probably would have just escaped AGAIN for originality's sake.

Added to this I must agree with some other reviewers that the main actress is a little lacking. Some instances her bad acting just took me out of the story completely. The fight scenes look so bad. And all the side stories of her radio friend, the lawyer, the junkie and the policeman who turned out to be Nuke were just not interesting. You know there's not much story when there are as many sex scenes as there are episodes.

Hopefully Jessica Jones can do an Agents of Shield and improve dramatically in the 2nd season, but as of yet I am very worried for the quality of the Luke Cage series if this is any indication.

It has potential but they really need to reign in all the plot holes and emotional constipation. Jessica was supposed to be some sort of stoic heroin with a tragic past but instead she was just a mopey mess. I got tired of watching her and all her cohorts, as everyone in the show seemed to be in a perpetual state of PMS, including the men. Her self loathing and the tie ins with Luke Cage were really very cheesy and forced. They also didnt do any justice to the purple man or anyone else... all the characters were mentally challenged in this show and if it were not for their sheer stupidity, the season would have ended in about 3 episodes. Instead, they forced really big plot holes into the script to push it to 13 episodes. David Tennant really didnt do himself any favors playing Killgrave. I am not sure if its his fault or if its just the script but he was 1 dimensional the entire show and boring to watch. Luke Cage was also exhausting.

The show needs better writers. I think it has potential to be very good if they think about the stories a little harder and eliminate the repetitive aspects but as it stands now, it is at best, a below average show.

I think this is a great show. While binge watching isn't my thing it also doesn't fit the show that well. The action sequences are clearly faked and just not good to watch & the over all feel seems to be uninteresting at beat. With this though the characters are great and the dialogue is at beat tolerable.

You know it's bad when you're through 11 of 13 episodes and seriously consider if you care enough to watch the final two. As many others have noted, it was just too long; it could have been a full eight episodes. At thirteen they've just fluffed. Do we really need a throng of supporting cast to exhibit and explore all the differing degrees, variations, shades and techniques of controlling, abusive relationships? Half a dozen couples in the series suffer the same co-dependency problems, deal with them more or less badly, and preach the same moral on personal dysfunctionality. Ho, hum. It took five episodes for me to get interested--three too many, in these days of television glut. And only after the seventh and eighth did the cruel and clever plot twists (which include graphic torture) become truly gripping. In the early episodes, the pacing was logy and the action muddy, with several subplots that itched to be trimmed or recast.

Given the otherworldly circumstances, it all moves along quite logically and at a brisk pace that leaves dawdling for dead. There’s no flabby midsection here, just one major development after another. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and frequent. And the twists are imaginative while also being grounded in the grim realities of this ramped-up universe.

While, at first, the actress may not look like the superhero type, she convincingly gives Jessica a subtle toughness. In a way, the character is the flip side of Supergirl: Jones is a reluctant superhero, a loner who drinks too much and has real human flaws. Yet Ritter gives Jessica a needed likability. The series also boasts a solid supporting cast.
