Jessica Jones season 1 takes us on a journey with one of the most troubled characters that we’ve been introduced to yet in the Marvel universe. Season 1 has a very dark and gloomy feel to it but this feel works immensely to the show’s benefit. The dialogue and story give us an in depth look at how Jones’s experience in the past have created her pain and trauma in the present. We also get to see how she reacts to that pain and trauma and how they influence her relationships with other people. Overall the acting of the season is very good; every substantial actor plays their part to perfection and helps to create a very adult feel for the season. This is a Marvel show that is intended for mature audiences and not for kids since there are very troubling themes that are core to the season. This is also a great example of a season that has a bunch of actors who we haven’t seen too much of prior to the season and gives them screen time and moments to shine so they can showcase their talent as actors. David Tennant’s Kilgrave is a scary villain who really amplifies the dark, gloomy and traumatic feel to this season. His ability is one of the most intimidating we’ve seen and Tennant does a fantastic job making Kilgrave an anxiety building villain for both viewers and Jones. Kilgrave is to this season was Fisk was to season 1 of Daredevil, although Fisk is a slightly better villain since he doesn’t have any inherent abilities. One thing I also like about this season is that Jones has issues that a lot of people can relate to, but she isn’t a character who you want to be able to relate to. This season is the embodiment of a troubled and trauma-based life seen through the lens of someone with superpowers, and even those superpowers don’t really help Jones cope with her past and deal with her pain. This is a season that you have to prepare yourself for, but once you’re ready, you’ll watch one of the most mature and well-executed Netflix shows that Marvel has made to date. Expand

It took five episodes for me to get interested--three too many, in these days of television glut. And only after the seventh and eighth did the cruel and clever plot twists (which include graphic torture) become truly gripping. In the early episodes, the pacing was logy and the action muddy, with several subplots that itched to be trimmed or recast.

Given the otherworldly circumstances, it all moves along quite logically and at a brisk pace that leaves dawdling for dead. There’s no flabby midsection here, just one major development after another. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and frequent. And the twists are imaginative while also being grounded in the grim realities of this ramped-up universe.

While, at first, the actress may not look like the superhero type, she convincingly gives Jessica a subtle toughness. In a way, the character is the flip side of Supergirl: Jones is a reluctant superhero, a loner who drinks too much and has real human flaws. Yet Ritter gives Jessica a needed likability. The series also boasts a solid supporting cast.
