There is a perfect balance of complex geopolitical scenes that highlight the culture and politics of the Mongols in the 13th century and also a tasteful amount of action.

This is another diamond in the rough drama series that rewards paying attention and where one will pickup more detail on future re-watches. But also one can watch it casually and still understand the plot.
Absolutely no characters seemed one dimensional and they all had colorful and dynamic backgrounds and interesting traits.
Sex scenes are also tastefully done unlike many TV-MA shows where they seem like filler and run on for way too long.

Cinematography: 5/5 - The colorful sets and outdoor scenes alike are breathtaking and really pull you in. I was fully absorbed within the first 10 minutes of watching.

Acting: 4/5 - I found the acting on the level of Game of Thrones and other hit drama series.
Plot: 5/5 - The most important aspect of any drama movie or TV series is the plot, in my opinion, and this does not disappoint. It goes into the complex geopolitics of the Mongols and explores it without dragging on, seeming like filler, or becoming boring.

Picture Quality: 4/5 - I watched in Super HD on a 40" display and did not notice any macroblocking or other common artifacts associated with bitrate starvation.
The only nitpick I have is the aspect ratio not being 16:9 as all other modern TV series are. However, the black bars are extremely minimal and nowhere near as big as movies often have so it was not distracting.

Audio: 5/5 - I only have a 2.0 sound system so I listened to the Stereo mix which sounds very different than the Dolby DD+ 5.1 mix - on my 2.0 system the Stereo mix sounded like it was optimized specifically for 2.0 systems rather than a cheap downmix from 5.1.
The musical score really adds to the tone and feel of the show and I find the quality of the compositions to rival John Williams or other big names in film.

Great show, high quality drama. Great camera work, costumes and locations.
Shows how far out of touch the professional critics are from the public.
Most are sheep, most just like to be mean and probably get more readers with a negative page title.

If you like Game of Thrones you will certainly love Marco Polo. Although the feminists viewers will be offended I do fancy some of the more passionate scenes involved. I registered on Meta Critics just for this show, and it is the first thing that has brought a smile to my face in over a week. As the season progresses the articulation does so as well and I found myself clapping at the finale with joy. They are some very unique aspects to this show but most of all I truly loved the immersion of the cultures and the historical period of the mid to late 1200;s as there are no other shows that have such an imaginative take on the Silk Road period. The acting was solid and although at times it lacked action it more than makes up for it in the end.

Overall I will be a zealous supporter of this show. It literally took me aback at times, had me leaning in at others yet most of all had me frequenting cigarette breaks due to the collective experience. Very well done thank you so much for this show Netflix.

I for one enjoyed the first season, very much. The character, Marco Polo was already the only white person among Asians, he did not need to over-dramatize his role since he stood out anyway. It's also nice to see that although the story is about him, it can only be in context of the larger-than-life characters. The show has layers of complexities, and I like that it is not very predictable. While the critics claims that Marco Polo is a boring character, I think that they missed they entire point. He is an outsider! The Khan is ruthless, and he is far from foolish. Kublai has a huge ego as is expected, and people with such big egos tend to behave very foolishly. The story is about power struggles which Marco isn't much a part of. He is an outsider, and he behaves as such. He is humble and does not believe himself to be above anyone, as is not typically the case when the white westerner gets involved.

As to the role of women and nudity - as a woman myself, all I can say is "what else is new"? I enjoyed the show, very much and I would recommend it.

In any case, the show allowed me to know more about some historical events that I had not the chance to learn in school, and this is definitely a plus.
I do not share the faults found by some critic reviews say. I found the quality of the image always clear, in dark scenes too. The story is compelling and you always want to get back to see what's next.
The characters are well-rounded, and both sides (Mongols and Chinese) have both positive and negative aspects. However, I have to say that the Chinese minister is perhaps too evilly characterised, so you naturally come to wish for his defeat.
Particular mentions deserves Lorenzo Richelmy (Marco Polo): I found his acting particularly good, his speeches crystal clear and he himself charming. I was surprised to find out he's actually Italian, as I usually do not like Italian actors (I am Italian too, so I see many of them).
There is but one thing I did not like, and it's the very last scene: that painting is way too explicit, and I seriously doubt someone with those ambitions and that political ability would keep such a painting in plain sight.
Conclusion: can't wait for season 2!

I am appalled by all the horrible reviews from the critics. As an Asian American woman who also loved Game of Thrones, I have to disagree with them. I am comforted that the user ratings serve the series justice.

I started the show knowing nothing about it – I was unaware of what the critics have said thus far and watched it with an open mind. I loved it. The show was extremely captivating. I binge watched 4 episodes and wanted more but it was already 1am.

I can’t help but think that the low reviews from critics are paid-off or just extremely biased. Either way, I urge everyone to just watch it for yourselves regardless of the reviews (both user and critics).

I do not watch this show for historical accuracy. If I wanted that, I would watch a documentary… and critique it. I expect the shows I watch to entertain me, and this Marco Polo did. I can see how some people would find this series boring at first – like GoT, you are introduced to a lot of characters at first and some very complicated geopolitical warfare that guides the plot. What I look for most in a show is character development through conflict, I think this show does this well. I do have to agree, Marco Polo is not my favorite character and at times he is even forgotten. Kublai Khan’s character is extraordinary and shows a lot of depth. All characters in this show are driven by an underlying motive – some are not fully developed yet (I am only on episode 4), but I am eager to find out how they will continue to choose their own paths.

As an Asian American, I would like to address the “oriental stereotypes” that critics keep calling to. I am typically very sensitive to these subjects and are wary of them when I watch Asian actors in western films. I did not have any issues with this during my viewing of Marco Polo (other than that they all speak with an accent, but then again so does Marco Polo because he is from Italy). I don’t doubt that kung fu and objectifying women were realities back in 12th century. For those to exist in this film makes sense to me. I feel that the creator is using these mediums to paint a true picture of what society was like in that time period. I say this because I have watched many Chinese movies in my lifetime (in Chinese), and the same themes exist there as well. Crouching Tigger Hidden Dragon was solely based on these concepts, yet it won many Academy Awards. Game of Thrones was fully explicit with their nudity, I didn’t see anyone complaining about objectifying women there (although, that is valid). Also, I do not think Marco Polo did any of this in a distasteful manner, I did not feel offended.

In fact, I applaud the creators for casting such a diverse cast. This movie creates a new level of exposure to amazing acting done by Asian actors and other actors of color as well. These are actors from all over the world with different backgrounds and experiences, much like Khan’s empire. Finally, in 2014 do we have a diverse cast, if only this can be carried into films that are set in the modern day as well.

If there were Chinese subtitles, I would recommend this to my parents as well.

I hope for the best for this series. It would be discouraging and unjust for it to fail based on these critics reviews, I encourage everyone to watch for yourselves.

Once it gets going though the courtly intrigue, scheming, and martial arts are pretty great. In my opinion the only real downsides are some really obvious last gen CG effects, and Marco being written a little too "I'm the hero"-ey.

It's worth giving it a few episodes to see if you like it.

It is not on the same level for sure, but it is by no means a failed attempt, where GoT is great, marco polo is good, and more than makes up for it with the excellent CGI battles and kong-fu action sequences. I feel we've been spoilt a little by the excellant standard of Martin's fantasy epic, and we (or perhaps critics) should be less quick to dismiss quality TV for simply not being as intellectually mind-blowing as game of thrones can be. This is a show to be compared with The Tudors or Reign. This is an excellent show, that highlights and fantasizes the mystic east, without the idealization and romance found in other lesser historical dramas.

This is not an epic fantasy and thus can not hope to provide the type of sweeping epic drama of that genre. This is a romp through time and history into a familiar landscape of our earth in a legendary age. No show before it has tried to conquer such breadth of vision, nor has come close to such an expansive empire. Each episode is a whirlwind of action and drama and character that few shows of the historical fiction genre can compete.

I am both disturbed and bewildered by the negative reviews. This show is so great, and so unparalleled that not only did I make an account to write this review, but I felt a wave of deep sadness that these so called critics could be so wrong!

First off, the official reviews just highlight both the divide between critics and their audiences as well as their bias concerning non-Western focused media. Second, everything said, both positive and negative, are all true to a certain extent but the hyperbole doesn't begin to cover the subtlety and complexity of this story. The critics also grossly oversimplify the pro and cons as well leave out one of the most important aspects of this show: pacing. You'll find yourself forgiving the occasionally dry, melodramatic battle speech because of one tiny flicker of a character's eyelids that teases that the traitor will finally be revealed. This show is that well-planned out: even the scenes where the acting feels ham-fisted and the nudity and blood seem like the distractions of filler are easily forgiven even by the impatient because of the promise of new developments and long-awaited conclusions. And that comes from someone who can never successfully binge-watch of filler and impatience. Yes, this type of medieval drama is covered by Game of Thrones, but not with these kind of REAL WORLD examples. Yes, there often seems an abundance of fighting and sex scenes, but they never feel pointless. Yes, sometimes some actors give you a scene that feels over the top and wooden, but then will make it up for with another that feels like a real human display of emotion and the opposite is true of even the best characters in the series. Yes, the dialogue, action and intrigue appeal to many different genres at once, but never in a way that feels incomplete. Despite its title, Marco Polo is less about the man and more about his transformation from a God-fearing European into a servant of the Khan, as well as his role as an agent of change in a empire that is hinted may be fast reaching its zenith. Marco Polo is about the ultimately morally grey process of civilization and nation-building, likely without even intending to be. A character may be cast as strong as iron and brimming with confidence, only to be observed as they break from their failures and wallow in their flaws. While the "villains" may occasionally display more of the latter, they are never made out to be evil and are often driven by these flaws towards quite sympathetic goals. For their part, the "heroes" often attain victories that quickly feel hollow and temporary, and you'll find yourself sympathizing with Kublai as it all threatens to fall apart - until he callously starts ordering executions and mutilations, then goes and shows what a loving husband and father he is as well as a loyal friend, before moving onto the killing again and repeating the cycle. Simply put, Marco Polo is not for those who constantly need things to be put simply, and it's geared more for those who like analyzing a story as well as reading about the background outside of the episode run-time. The series is very pleasantly paced and uses history as a guideline. Nowhere does it try to do otherwise.
It does however take historical information, like the role of the Wong dinasty, the fall of the great wall and the role of a trebuchet-like contraption in it. It however gives it a spin and enlarges the role of the main character in this.
It is pure historical fiction and should be well enjoyed like this.

The writing might not be as flawless as Game of Thrones, but I found it to be just as gripping in it's own unique way. Occasionally the show will throw in some moments that just don't make all that much sense when you really begin to ponder them. Whether or not they actually played out that way in real life I cannot say, but overall this show's 10 episodes have intrigued me to take a look into it. Even if it isn't the show makes for a compelling take on the history.

Yes, comparisons to Game of Thrones are being made by just about everyone, myself included. The reason for that that is the set up is similar. We as viewers are thrown into a world where many different characters are vying for power and are wiling to betray others and throw the world into chaos in order to get it. While it doesn't quite reach the heights the HBO masterpiece has it still gives plenty of reason to take it's world in. It's worth watching just for the gorgeous Asian setting/imagery and occasional kung fu action alone.

I thoroughly enjoyed this show and thought it had good characterization, excellent cinematography, brilliantly choreographed fight sequences that put most films to shame, and a compelling enough story to hold my attention throughout. One wonders why the public even needs professional TV critics advising them what to watch when there is often a huge disparity between what the public enjoys and the critics do. Sometimes I think if one well-respected critic pans a film or TV show it will heavily influence and stymie the objectivity of other critics who want to be seen as insightful by their peers. It then starts a snowball-like effect and other critcs just fall into line. The idea that there are a small group of people out there who are better than the public at discerning how good a TV show is, is of course, utter nonsense. And in this case the critics have failed spectacularly as evidenced by the giant chasm in the score above. The public have spoken and Marco Polo is very good and worth watching. I really don't understand why the critics did not give it higher reviews? I have recommended to many family members and friends.

They both accomplish great skill through hard work, which 100 Eyes tells us is the meaning of kung fu (did not know that and I'm a huge Chinese culture aficionado). One's mind is in bondage, another's is not. Thousand Eyes is powerless, yet he has power. Jia Sidao has power, yet he is powerless. Jia Sidao is soft (emotional wounds), so he must be hard. Thousand Eyes is hard, because he is soft.

Whenever you watch anything 'fantastical' on television, or in the cinema, you have to switch off the more rational part of your brain and just go with the notion that what you're witnessing falls into the scope of the show/film as it's set up and progresses.
But therein lies the problem with Marco Polo, it's a television show about a recognised historical figure, one of actual importance, but it is written and produced using only the slightest amount of known historical fact.
What that means is we witness completely fictitious characters and events that have no basis in what actually did happen when this Portuguese trader ended up in Mongolia in the 13th Century, it's just turned into blatant 'popcorn' escapism, and it's frustrating.

So, is there anything good about the programme?
Well, the direction is good, the cinematography is nice, the set design is well done, as is the costume design. From a visual perspective, you are wowed by the effort put into the production.
    But that's really about it....

    What is bad then?
I understand that the show is funded by Americans, for Americans... And we know the 'average' American is generally too stupid to understand the world extends beyond their own 50 States.... But having everyone speaking English destroys any sense of atmosphere. I don't understand why the people making the show would go to such great lengths to make things 'look' so good if, whenever someone starts speaking, they speak a language that they clearly shouldn't be.
Add to that some dubious casting choices (why do 90% of the Mongolians look Chinese/Japanese?), some terrible action choreography (every action scene, on pretty much every scale, is shot in near darkness), and huge lulls in pacing.... And you get a show which is watchable, but only if you switch off your brain completely.

Oh, and as pointed out earlier.... Don't go into this show thinking it's something you can use to really find things out about its particular era and 'real life' characters..... It's 99% fiction.

I thought Lorenzo Richelmy's Marco Polo was a bit dull to start with, but I am getting used to him, and now that I learned he was thought English for the show only, it kind of makes more sense that he became more believable towards the middle of the season, but whatever Marco Polo lacks in English skills, all the other actors compensate in amazing performances, the cinematography is perfect, the characters are deep and their story gets you completely involved.

Other points: The sets are incredible, and obviously expensive. I'm no Mongol expert, but I have a better than average knowledge of world history and military history, and I think the series as a whole has a good, historical feel. In the first few episodes, there is a distinct lack of direction. The plot just meanders along, and you're never really given an idea of what the overall story-arch will be. And some of the dialogue is so cliche and ham-fisted, it sounds like it was ripped straight from an old kung fu movie. I blame the writers for this entirely. The actors for the most part do an admirable job. But for some reason, the writers felt the need to build up the "exoticness" or the people by making them sound like Asian stereotypes. The smart thing would have been to simply let the setting and cultural differences speak for themselves. However if you can overlook these shortcomings, Marco Polo offers some great entertainment for TV fans (and especially history buffs). Expand

Its a shame to have a good show get bashed by critics who watched like one episode. It may not be game of thrones but this show definitely deserves more than a metascore of 25. So stop comparing it to GoT. Why do I have a feeling that cable networks like HBO paid the critics off to eliminate competition? The overall tone so far is extremely rich - the $90 million pricetag really shows in the overall production quality as the settings, direction and music are all top-notch.

The actors behind Kublai Khan and Hundred Eyes really smashes the role too, however the lead actor doesn't quite live up to the hype so far.

I registered to write this review for Marco Polo after having my expectations for Marco Polo unfairly lowered by what I now see as ignorant critics.

Usually, I think critics get it right. If some show has a low score on metacritic it is usually not worth watching. I had been waiting for the release of Marco Polo with anticipation, but as the early reviews began coming in I started to think the show was almost unwatchable and easily forgettable.

I now know that this was a totally wrong mindset. The critics have got it wrong on this one and why they derided this show as a bunch of crying hyneas is a good question. I see no justification for the low ratings it has had.

A lot of the early critique seems centered on the acting and dialogue. I agree that the dialogue for the early episodes may have been a bit off but I am now on the 9th episode and I think the dialogue is now extremely good and on a par with Game of Thrones. The acting fo the main character has also been criticised as boring and without passion. I actually think the producers made the right choice in making Marco Polo be subdued as a character. The central role of Marco Polo is not to be the centre of attention but more an observer of the Khan's court. The really colourful characters are the Chinese and Mongols and I think this is why some Western critics have lambasted the show so much. A lot of Western critics are simply full of ethnocentrism so when they see a show like Marco Polo they invariably compare it to Game of Thrones whose Pseudo-European Medieval universe is known to most TV and Film viewers. They totally fail to appreciate how Marco Polo is set in a culture that is far removed from what Game of Thrones would have us believe the Medieval world of Power politics looked like. This is Asia which is a continent with as many varied cultures as Europe. Marco Polo shows that really well by having the court of the Khan stocked with foreigners who at one point or another seem to have been enslaved by the Mongols - this makes their loyalty interesting to question. The differences between Mongol culture and Chinese is also well depicted - Chinese culture being more adept at diplomacy and cunning and the Mongols being influenced by Chinese culture while still relying on brute force as the foundation of their power.

There are so many good reasons to love this show and I very much hope fans will support it and prove the critics wrong. If this show is a one season wonder then it is a travesty when other crappy shows like Walking Dead get rave reviews and run season after season. With Marco Polo Netflix has once gain raised the bar and made a show that normal TV channels should produce but don't produce because they are old-fashioned and ethnocentric.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the Asian Game of Thrones, or Netflix Game of Thrones by my point of view although they are not historically accurate, in some points;

As I read some reviews from the top critics they only judged the first 1-2 episodes, and they thought Marco Polo was the center of the action like in most series, but the tittle by my point of view only describes that the events are taking place in Marco Polos time frame.

Also there are rumors on the internet of a $90 mil. budget ,this also seen in the series that it has a quite large cast and also a lot of stage men and stage props, really liked that they got some trebuchet and a big wall to simulate the walled city those where not made for free by my point of view...also the fight scenes are very real, didn't a lot of stunt men there...

The intrigue is interesting and makes political and military sense (not too many "*really?*" moments). The show is a bit gratuitous with the nudity at times, but they usually tie it well to character development or political scheming (which too few shows care to do nowadays). History lovers will enjoy Googling along with the series as historical names and battles are introduced while martial arts fans will appreciate the intricately choreographed fight scenes. Although the series isn’t as riveting as “Game of Thrones,” strong performances and impeccable visuals make it worthy of a watch on a slow and rainy afternoon.
