It’s classic cranky Seinfeld, but there’s such a spring in his step as he moves about the stage, such a twinkle in his eye as his voice goes higher, to the point where he sounds like everyone’s not-good imitation of Jerry Seinfeld, that none of it comes across as angry. This is the comedy of joyful bemusement.

Helicopter sky-dive apart, there’s nothing daring about Seinfeld – but if 23 Hours to Kill is safe, it’s also, usually, sparkling.

Hopefully, our current sorry state as a civilization will have the luxury of getting back to laughing at these trivialities anew. And if not, we’ll always have these old Seinfeld-at-home-on-the-stage movies –on Netflix — to remember how it was back when self-seeking friends turned “picture bullies” were all we had to worry about, back when “dinner and a show” were totally a thing.

Watching Jerry Before Seinfeld may feel more comforting in this moment than watching 23 Hours To Kill. But whether you think he’s great or he sucks, well, you’re not far off from the truth, either way.

23 Hours to Kill is his first completely original special since 1998, but it’s not exactly cutting-edge stuff—it has a whole block of jokes about Pop-Tarts and frozen orange juice. Many viewers will find solace in that sameness.

Do I wish Seinfeld took a few more creative risks in “23 Hours to Kill”? Sure, but there’s also something comforting about a familiar style that could easily be cut up an inserted into a reboot of “Seinfeld”.

If you dug his brand of observational stand-up in the past, you might still like it today. If you consider yourself a true connoisseur of dad jokes, get ready for a feast. If you’ve always felt like Jerry Seinfeld was a parody of himself, and of an entire strand of stand-up that peaked during the Reagan years, then this might be a tough hour to get through.

The first third was a "get off my lawn you kids" version of his original shtick. Then he went into his explanation of the sexes, which wasn't original thinking nor funny, some of it was actually cringe worthy especially if you were a woman. The last ten minutes was more AARP Seinfeld.

If you've watched most of his "Comedians in Cars" you've marveled at his wit but, at the same time, realized that he's an ass. Instead of fifteen minute bits you get an hour here. Getting old is tough and that's what has happened to Jerry.

We need more of this stuff. I always have mad respect for any comedian who actually puts the work in to be funny without going for "cliched" shock value crassness. This is funny stand up. This is Jerry Seinfeld. He is a talented man. Full Review »
