Its consistent, formulaic approach is perfect for a complex story with several moving parts. You won’t cheer for the implication this story has on modern foreign relations (a component teased in upcoming episodes), but you’ll be thankful it’s told with such focus and clarity.

There always could have been room for more interviews or additional perspectives, but what’s in Hostages is substantive, wide-ranging and inclusive in a way not every telling of the story would have been.

To those paying attention to current events, one needn’t have lived through the crisis to recognize its lingering repercussions, or how well “Hostages” encapsulates them; still, the carefully curated, in some instances previously unseen clips should bring the historical moment flooding back for anyone who did.
