Its consistent, formulaic approach is perfect for a complex story with several moving parts. You won’t cheer for the implication this story has on modern foreign relations (a component teased in upcoming episodes), but you’ll be thankful it’s told with such focus and clarity.

To those paying attention to current events, one needn’t have lived through the crisis to recognize its lingering repercussions, or how well “Hostages” encapsulates them; still, the carefully curated, in some instances previously unseen clips should bring the historical moment flooding back for anyone who did.

All of the big picture stuff is very interesting, and very well-assembled here, but the most moving and striking material comes from the people who were in that embassy for over a year, on both sides of the gun.
