So far the show is biting, funny, touching and surprising. In short, it's an absolute delight, and possibly even better than the landmark first season.

Girls is already one of the most "New York" shows on television, with its brilliant skewering of aspiring, overentitled creative-class types like Lena Dunham's Hannah.... This season also has astute things to say about the heartbreak, and the relief, of getting older and reexamining your dreams.

It's richer than ever. It's more nuanced. Whereas it used to be buzzy and contentious, it's now simply good.

A particularly sharp fourth season.

Season four is definitely a turning point for these characters, as we watch them reach for some semblance of adulthood, but this newfound maturity is shaky at best.

Girls is as Girls always was--sharply observed, intensely self-aware and very funny.

The new season has plenty of surprises (couples aren’t who you think they are), a reality check for Marnie and a nice showcase for Rannells.

It remains invigoratingly itself and it continues to land in Hannah in a series of situations in which layers of thematic complexity stack up like delayed planes circling a busy airport.

Girls still delivers other memorable moments, though. And not all of them are gag-inducing. Dunham has written some terrific scenes for herself, and she also rises to the occasion of acting them out. Even so, how many times can this show basically go back to square one?

Hannah’s finally growing up, and how she deals with the inevitable betrayals of people she placed too much trust in will provide Girls with a worthy season arc--and give the aspiring novelist inside the hipster some real material to come.

What started as a refreshingly female-centric yet awkward comedy has grown into a strange and oddly mature study of how Hannah and her ilk come to terms with the labor that goes into art after years of fantasizing about the façades and lifestyles of bohemian artists.

Girls continues to operate in a very limited range, both benefiting from, and in some ways handcuffed by, its generational specificity.

A fourth season that, while competent, also feels somewhat beside the point.... This season the characters are making a concerted effort to change, but the show itself: not so much.

For the most part, Girls is still wickedly written and, for some viewers, the best hate-watch around. Yet it too easily runs on fumes from a hipster era (circa 2012) that is already ossifying.

With talents like Dunham (who created the show, writes, directs and stars) and executive producer Judd Apatow behind the scenes, you’d expect at least more chuckles than you get from this sad return.
