What an exquisite exemplar of British comedy rep theatre Ghosts has been. If you find the episode a little inconclusive, there’s a Christmas special to come.

It certainly doesn't feel too final, just in case there is ever any desire to revive it. Television has grown very tense in recent years, but there is a lot to be said for TV that is sweet, funny, clever and warm. I hope that one day Ghosts comes back to haunt us.

Wise, humane and warm-hearted, there are few more comforting comedies than Ghosts. This is a worthy way to lay it to rest – until Christmas, that is, when it will return for a final festive special.

Ultimately, if you've been enjoying the Button House rollercoaster up to now, there's nothing here that will make you want to get off early. Instead, get ready to savour your last ride – and brace yourself for a bumpy landing.
