Jon was always written to fight against the white walkers. To have someone else steal the kill shot from him, just to fit in with 2019 political agenda is disgusting. I've been waiting for this for over 20 years. This is not what was promised. The battle scene was completely stupid as well. Walls are meant to be hidden behind or mounted upon. Hopefully they haven't neutered GRRM as they did D&D. Ever since the show runners took over the story this show has been total crap. Expand

Okay. 8 years of anticipation. Tons of building up through well written episodes... and THIS is what we got!? **** this ****

From the way this episode was filmed, to the decisions made for this battle and how it ends. The best word associated would be Underwhelming (and dissapointing).

First off the Dothraki and Unsullied, who were hyped up for years, are treated like the most disposable army to have ever existed. Absolutely cringeworthy and stupid.

The battle is a cgi filled, hard to watch mess that does little to excite you. The battle tactics of Winterfell make no sense, and don't deliver anything witty like the Battle of the Bastards. Characters, which have been build up for years, with mystique and development to them are killed off like disposable extra's. They don't die in an honourable way, nor do their deaths carry wait or shock like past seasonds.

Major characters are mostly sidelined, and spend their screentime in front of a greenscreen. The only character that receives some form of justice is Arya.

I just can't believe it. I could write so much more, but then it would contain spoilers. This episode is underwhelming, and dissapointed me greatly. I give it a 5/10.

Now I understand Cercei's right decision to not joining these morons. If these show sticks with its original philosophy that mistakes has consequences they should all be joining the dead army. They put soldiers outside the castle walls, make a suicidal cavalry charge, put artillery IN FRONT of the troops and fire pits BEHIND their own troops, just to take a good dramatic shoot. And the walls itself practically undefended. .. But they have flaming swords, and wizards, and zombies, and... dragons. How that couldn't be soo cool! And a badass kungfu ninja who sneaks an entire army and jumps in a surprise attack and stabs the bad guy in the classic anticlimatic last moment. And everybody is dead, except the main characters, because they are all now level 20 and they have superpowers. Expand

This season is starting to be far the worst of any season and is far the worse of any seasons 3rd episode, the casualities where minimal with only 5 major character casualties Expand

Since the very first episode (which is called "Winter is coming") we are warned of the great dangers of the far north, and all of it comes down to this ?? The Night King is completely trivialized as a standard "bad guy" with no real, plausible reasons to kill everyone. Also I wasn't aware that Arya had lesson with the Faceless Men and with the Spider-Man... Huge plot holes and suddenly Arya is Azor Ahai and apparently it all makes sense because Melisandre said something long ago... Terrible. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pure fanservice. Cheap hollywood writing full of tropes. Mindless battle moves purely for cinematic effect (i. e. the dothraki army going on a suicide attack, but how cool to light up their weapons and see them go out one by one.. ). We see the main characters covered by zombies time after time after time.. but somehow they ALL survive like it s nothing. The red wedding killed more main characters than the Apocalypse! Garbage, garbage writing. It s a shame as the director and the cast did an amazing job, kudos to them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a little irritating seeing everyone letting themselves get carried with the online negative-buzz surrounding this episode, which makes them belittle the hard work that had to be done to bring us this magnificent episode, so I feel like I have to at least state my piece.

First and foremost, calm down- I had issues with the episode as well. The thing is, these issues mainly come from things I expected to see and didn't happen, and definitely not stuff like "the writers ruined 8 years of buildup" and stuff like that- which I personally don't understand. So yeah, I was expecting to see Jon engaging a little bit more in the battle and get some Hardhome/BotB type material here. More than anything I was a little bit disappointed the White Walker themselves didn't engage more in the battle. But on the contrary, a lot of things I expected were indeed delivered in this episode, and some exceeded expectations. I also had more minor complaints, like some characters seemingly surviving impossible situations and what happened to the Dothraki, which seems like a fail of logic on the strategic side. But wait- isn't the good strategic logic the exact reason the White Walkers chose not to engage the battle themselves, because if they do they can get slayed and huge chunks of the Army of the Dead will immediately get destroyed?

I'm not going to try and debunk every complaint that's ever risen to this episode, but I will just state my point of view of some of the things. Firstly, ever since the first season we saw Arya training to be an assassin. It's one of the most prominent arcs in both the show and the books, and it was all leading to a big culmination of some sort eventually. So, what are those Faceless Men basically? Do you remember all the sneaky stuff J'aquen did in Harenhall in season 2? He did much worse than 'jumping'- that's what the Faceless Men are all about, stealthy and deadly assassins. And indeed- Arya stark slayed the Night King not in a single combat, but with stealth. How would anyone get near the Night King for a single combat anyway? If someone approaches he can just do what he did when Jon tried to do that- and raise the dead around him for protection. With such a central conflict (not the most central, though!) in the most popular TV series of all times, you can expect a lot would get disappointed from who will make the final blow. But how can you say it's 8 years of buildup ruined? We had hints about this for quite some time (Melisandre and Arya in Season 3, Bran giving Arya the dagger exactly where the Night's King was defeated and several other callbacks). People say the battle ended too easily- when actually it was undoubtedly the bloodiest and longest battle in the show, and had the most character deaths from any one of the battle episodes of the show yet. It ended with one dagger-blow, yes. But you can't say the entire conflict was solved with a swoosh.

So about Jon- what about The Price that was Promised, all the Melisandre prophecies, the flaming Sword and Nissa Nissa? The most important thing is to first identify what belongs only in the books and what is on the show. You can't expect theories that showed up in the books only to come to full closure in the TV series that has nothing to do with any of them. As for the show material, it is known that Melisandre's prophecies aren't 100% accurate, but what she said did come true, if you think about it. The Prince that was Promised? Definitely Jon. He is literally a prince, and as the prophecies said, he ended the Great War. Yeah, Arya gave the final blow. But Jon united the North and the Wildlings, gathered Daenerys' Dragons and armies for support and arranged the entire defense of the north and lead the battle, right until the big victory. Again, the battle was not against the Night's King specifically, but the Army of the Dead. And with that view Jon ended the war just as much as Arya. Without him, Westeros would have been in ruins right now. So now, Instead of one arc closing, we got two (Army of the Dead and Arya's development as a warrior) that came together for a single seemingly unpredictable result for both.

I'll end with some good things- Miguel Sapochnik gave us one of the most glorious spectacles ever seen in television or film, and in my opinions it's one of the best episodes I've seen in my life. Ramin Djawadi was brilliant as always- and kudos to the production for pulling all the effort to bring us this episode, I wish people were a little bit more appreciative. Anyway, the show is ending in a second, and when people will go back to watch all the average TV series out there I'm sure they'll miss it, even with all their nitpicking. And people seem to forget that despite what makes them 'hyped' the most- the show was always about people, and the War for the Throne. I never fooled myself even once with thinking the show will end with the War for the Dawn and was pretty surprised that many did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A horrible ending of the Night King, the show was preparing for him since the first season but, to end him that easily and without any logic of the show, even without a real fight (at least swinging his icy sword couple of times). It needed more working on it and not just finishing it like any other normal tv show or movie. And about the darkness of the episode, it was disappointing for the ones who really understood the show, it was only the screen which was dark. There was bad deaths which deserved and could be done better, more dramatic and more reasonable too.
In general the show needed some work and more George R. R. Martin. It contained many plot holes and bad written end for the biggest threat on the living.

By God, they have 7 seasons with the threat of the walkers, So much that they put us that the REAL THREAT was not other humans or the savages, but the Others (white walkers, in case you have not read the books) and for what? Of course, now it turns out that melissandre comes out of the fifth hell, arrives in the north who knows how and says that Arya is Azor Ahai, without any previous clue that she could be. Many will say: "Oh, in the third season she spoke to him and told him that there was death in his eyes, Arya is Azor Ahai and I loved the chapter," (people who, for obvious reasons have no idea of the series, was it Arya who fought against the walkers in Hardhome? NO, it was Jon, was it Arya who died to protect the free people? NO, it was Jon, but of course, for some very ambiguous phrases of 5 seasons ago, it all makes sense not WHY NOT, now it turns out that ARYA is Azor Ahai, and that, in addition, it can jump 5 meters, and infiltrate the horde of walkers without ANYONE SEEING IT, that I tell you, that up to the high command of the King of the Night They seemed a few Maniquiés ptos, `` The Long Night '' and that supposed long night lasted a single chapter Is it really that mrda knew about the walkers, or even the king of the night ?, They had a purpose, they felt so less, or, on the contrary, are the typical badly-made villains that only want destruction? (which, as far as e showed us, I think that pity, the second option is correct). On the other hand, that of having ALL the main characters have a "shield of protection" seems super ridiculous and cowardly, like hell Sam survived while she was on the floor crying like a baby, if she was not supposed to have the ability to weapons? how did Brienne and Jaime survive, when were they surrounded by walkers more than once? What does Thormund bring to the plot? Mard jokes about having giant babies with Brienne? Seriously ?, but of course, it makes more sense to give a shield of protection to all the characters who already had their plots completed, than to kill them heroically, closing their stories in an epic way and showing them TRULY the supposed threat of the walkers. `'Oh, but how unpredictable that Arya killed the King of the Night and is Azor Ahai, what a complex and structured plot '' would say a` `fan '' more than the bunch who see the series as fashion. Unfortunately, it will be unpredictable, but it does not stop being Ridiculous, Badly Structured, and very, very, very regrettable. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well... this is the end of the road for me, i left ironicly the same way i entered this place, but unfortunally not in the same way. Game of thrones had the balls to kill off his main hero in it first season, it was shocking but logical, it made sense, action equal consequence. Now killing it's main vilain in the mid of it's final season just because you don't know how to deal with it in another way that's just dumb, especially when you kill him by a deus ex machina with a character vthat that has nothing to do with that exept that she's a "slayqueen and fans favorite". Even if it was the only issue with this episode i wouldn't liked it, but there's more, plot armor for main character, poor strategical war choices and "hide my poor cgi with blizzard and darkness" problems, what i liked with GRR Martin story is that every bad move cost a great deal in the game for the throne, now I'm assuming that you can making mistakes is fun when you play the russian roullette ! I was hoping that GOT didn't lost his mojo, and that feeling was here since season 6, with episode 2 of season 8 I was hopefull, now i'm just... out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the "gooder" episodes this season besides episode 1. Hyped the long night so much just to disappoint everyone in a rushed episode of a rushed season. The night king should have been dedicated the whole season. Dumb & Dumber managed to ruin one of the best show ever just before the finish line. All those prophecies and things that were developing in the end were for nothing as they were not even used for a purpose. It might have been salvageable if they waited for the books to be finished or dedicate the entire season to the night king battle, while at the same time depicting very slowly but surely Daenerys as a villain, as they wanted to, or simply pick another route. And then! Only then dedicate another season to end all of it properly... I'm so sad that they ruined this all. Season 8 is the worst of season of them all, that's what happens when you hand some idiots the writing power and allow them to defecate on your story. There is a petition to remake it all but I doubt it will happen (i'd really be glad if it did). Season started well, but after episode 1 it was just a free fall without a parachute. I feel bad for all the actors, engineers, artists and crew members who worked really really hard to deliver an astonishing thing visually, audio wise, fx wise and acting wise but which were ultimately went down the **** hole because of some stupid writers. The crew and actors deserve an 11/10 all day everyday (which is why this is a 1/10 and not a 0/10)... the **** writers? (negative) -10/10. [SEASON FINALE SPOILERS BELOW] Jon Snow, true heir and king to the Iron Throne, king in the north and king beyond the wall. That's how it should have ended. Either him on the throne or nobody. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why end the whole existential threat before killing Cerci? The whole idea and premise of the show was that "the game" didn't matter in the end. Only now it matters more... More than magic, more than the children of the forest, the history of men, the whole idea of fantasy in the show. And Arya killing the nite king was such a bad idea and the execution was even worse, how did she get there? The plot armor was super strong and the only good thing about the Rosie was the cool Battle and great cinematography besides the darkness. Expand

Poorly filmed. Horrible writing. None of the characters actions make sense. The rules established in this series were all broken. The plot armor is ridiculously thick. Waste of time for everyone involved.

I loved the cinematography...I didn't suffer from the "its too dark syndrome"...I can live with all the plot points...But I think the show has betrayed its roots with its plot armour in this episode. If the characters are needed in the future keep them away from certain death and show non-important characters fighting, and maybe let one of them survive certain death...but not all of them. It was ridiculous. Expand

It gets a point for the scale of the action, but it just makes me sad for the crew who put so much into this pile of trash. Show's dead

Martin's world was still engaging and, as the show outran the content of the ASOIAF books, we also reserved some judgment not knowing whether we were witnessing roughly the intended continuation of the story or whether the showrunners were just taking liberties / lazily writing the rest of the show to meet deadlines or "subvert expectations."

Season 8 has so far shown it was the latter by utterly killing the show. All of the usual problems have become even more prominent but it's in denying the audience the fitting conclusions of many of the threads over the past 7 seasons (and in doing so ignoring notable events and prophecies that occurred over them) is where the show truly died while insulting almost all of the fanbase.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Who designed the defensive strategy at winterfell, a 5 year old boy? Instead of placing your infantry safe behind the walls they are left outside to be massacred by hordes of undeads. The episode is too dark and the end is not plausible. The Night King who has been build up as THE MEGA VILLAIN is just disposed of with a quick easy blow. Expand

Would have been a half-decent episode if I could actually SEE any of it?!
Minimal dialogue and ridiculously 'realistic' darkness of the battle had me squinting at the screen! The death of Night King - unexpected?? Yes... satisfying?? No!

Jon is becoming a wasted character and the huge excitement of him becoming the hero is dying a death. AWFUL

Thank you D&D for turning it into utter **** Obviously seasons 5 and 6 were less good, but I forgave because mistakes happen... Season 7 Wight Hunt was ridiculous, and that's were I started to lose hope for a great ending. There is no rewatching value after season 8. Turning a 10/10 into 8 would still have been ok. How did you manage to make it a 0/10? Season 8 starting from episode 3 is simply the worst writting ever. Congrats D&D for ruining it all, I won't watch the prequels. Expand
