Up until then it had been a diamond-hard, intense, unpredictable and ruthlessly realistic show, with characters who were terrible and cruel and funny and human, and who could never be reduced to the kind of goodie/baddie cliches that we were all so used to in fantasy fare like this.
Most importantly, never once did it pander to its fans and give them 'what they want'. The red wedding episode is, in my opinion, a turning point for modern mainstream television and a clarion call for everyone who wants artists to surprise them rather than simply please them. And the sad thing is that something like the red wedding won't happen again in GOT, can't happen again in GOT, because the people now leading the show do not think like G R R Martin; they don't have the cold, logical, politically realistic view of the world that he has. They don't see the world of Westeros in the same way as he did.

And so we are left with season 7 of Game Of Thrones, which is great to look at, still has some excellent characters, has a thrilling central narrative and is consistently enjoyable...and yet almost everything about the show that made it special has gone - gone is the slow mysteriousness of the way magic affected the world, and how powerful its effects might be; gone is the consistency of behaviour of the characters; gone are the logical, rigorous, entirely believable politics of the various kingdoms; most importantly, gone is the dizzying tension that came from knowing that the lives and deaths of even the most powerful characters were governed not by the demands of the viewers but by the demands of the storyline.
So we have a show which is still better than most things on television, is still compulsive, but has become flabby and soft and conventional where once it was as tight as a drum and unpredictable as the weather. It has become an enjoyable but ordinary show, and that's the most frustrating thing, because for a long while it was truly unique.

Only 2 episodes in season 7 and I'm already loving it. I think it will only get better from here. Finally all that was built up in the first 6 seasons is happening and that makes me so satisfied and so proud for being a fan of the show. Another must-see season of Game of Thrones.

Perhaps the best first episode since season four's "Two Swords". The dialogue has recaptured a lot that was lost in the last 2 seasons. The performances are great, mainly the big improvement in the performance by Pilou Asbæk as Euron Greyjoy. With Westeros looking smaller than ever, the stories have already started to collide in magnificent ways thanks to the winter, a time for wolves.

Because most/all of these publications don't have advanced access to the series, their reviews are pretty much worthless. As for me, two episodes in and I'm enjoying everything that's happening. The stories aren't as vastly-numbered, making it easier for me to follow the show, and the action is seemingly more readily available. The future in terms of the narrative are also intriguing as the remnants of the Stark family seem to be on a path of reuniting (nothing is certain and nothing has been made apparent in that regard, so not a spoiler) and the focus shifts on the White Walkers and the two major forces remaining in the 7 Kingdoms (Lanister and Targaryen). After watching this shorter 7-episode season, which caps it all off with an extended season finale (1 hr 20 mins), I have to say this was my favorite season of GoT yet. The pacing is superb, there are big stories to unravel and as everything slowly fuses together the show suddenly becomes more cohesive than it ever had been. With only one more season to go it's sad to think that the mayhem is going to scale up a bit before it all comes to a sudden close. The only good news is that, despite an even shorter season 8 (6 episodes are planned), those episodes are going to be movie-length. I've never loved this show more than I do now after the season 7 finale. Expand

Fantastic episode. They've clearly cut away as much as they could and have five main characters with clear directions. If the first episode of season 7 is an indication of the quality and tone for the rest of the season then it will be great.

Amazing that this show stays so good. EP1 is a table setting episode but yet still epic and enthralling as any of the EP1's in previous seasons. The plot is now quite fast moving. The quality of the acting, sets and graphics is still tip top notch.

episode 4 is the best episode of the season yet. there is no movie or series that I have enjoyed more than Game of Thrones simply put. the battle scene was absolutely intense and my brain felt like it was percolating with so many characters. I'm very much enjoyed the scene in the cave with Jon Snow and our Queen of dragons.

The only good things about season 7 are the special effects and the battle sequences which are better than ever. Direction in still on point too but everything else has sadly dropped in quality: dialogues are mostly embarrassing (Dany??) and the screenplay is not on the same level as the previous seasons.

Very nice recap & setup episode to establish and kick off the season. Arya compares Freys and Lannisters. Sam compares food input and output. Cersei and Dany compare maps. Sansa and Jon compare life experiences & leadership styles. Many of the reduced number of characters get great moments, some lighthearted, and most of them can reflect on where they've been and where they're headed.

They should seriously wait to review the season AFTER the season is over because after the first 4 episodes I would go as far to say that this is the most exciting, and compelling season of the show thus far and if the set pieces are this elaborate in just the 4th episode, then the rest of this season is going to have us gasping for breathe until the last credits roll

The characters are beautifully layered, no one really appearing black and white though their motives may be. With Season 7 underway, I'm even more engrossed in Westeros and the wars to come!

The episode "Dragonstone" was perfectly set up. I think the slow pace was perfect; not too much, not too little. With "Stormborn" following, that pace amped up dramatically and again, beautifully. The character development is stunning and the crossing of plots keeps things on a brisk pace! I'm truly terrified for the characters I've fallen madly in love with.

Having said that, this show is stunning. I have never read the books and now I want to. There is so much crap on TV that is renewed year after year (CSI, House etc.) which uses cheap gags, pointless and sometimes ridiculous plots, unbelievable and many times one dimensional characters and yet all the truly great shows get cancelled.

There is enough brain-dead television. But once in a while a show comes along that transports you to another world and makes you believe in the magic of television again. Game of Thrones is one such show.

It is complex, multi-layered, surreal, vibrant, imaginative and it draws your eye in to the surprising level of detail, from the sweeping vistas, to the narrow dungeons, from the beautiful castles and magnificent trees, to the contrasting landscapes. It is worth watching just for the scenery alone.

Yes the acting seems a little cold and even wooden at times, but this is perfectly in keeping with the medieval look and feel of the show. Yes it is dark and gloomy, but again in keeping with the narrative.

The scripting is intelligent and well delivered by competent acting, led by Sean Bean perfectly cast as Lord Edard. Although Sean Bean is better known for brooding bad guys, he strikes the perfect balance between father, husband and Lord and soldier. He is well supported by other well known actors and many new to the scene.

After watching and sometimes enjoying Camelot, this show makes that one look more like "Merlin" by comparison. And where Camelot lacks in depth and scripting, Game of Thrones strikes the perfect balance between brooding medieval angst and wonderful fantasy story telling.

Even if you have never watched a fantasy show before, you should not miss this.

This is the greatest TV show ever made, even better than Breaking Bad, Fargo, and The Americans. People rating it anywhere below an 8 have something wrong with them. If you are objective in analyzing its aspects - directing, editing, plot, setting, production value, sound, music, dialogue, etc. - it should average about a 9.5, and below an 8 is just criminal.

Many of the battle scenes are spectacular even by Game of Thrones standards and, after years of pieces being put in place, it’s great to see everything finally coming to a head. As has increasingly been the case since events overtook the books however the show has been guilty of some sloppy writing on occasions, and that is particularly evident during these seven episodes.

One particularly noticeable example, which has been discussed at length on the web, was Daenerys rescue of Jon Snow and his gang from beyond the wall. The scene itself was undeniably edge of your seat stuff but the time scale required for her to reach them in the time just made no logical sense and could easily have been cleaned up with just a couple of minor changes. Yes, this is a fantasy show, but you have to remain consistent to the rules of the world you’ve created if you want to keep your viewers absorbed in proceedings.

I’ll admit I still look forward to watching a new episode of Game of Thrones more than virtually any other TV show I can think off but it no longer has the narrative consistency that made earlier seasons so unique.

Little time is given to any of the secondary characters. This whole season there was only really one major side story aside from the main one. Now that it is resolved I fear the next season will seem even more simplified. I loved Game of Thrones for it's complexity.

The crisp editing of the Arya sequence, exploiting dramatic irony right up to the breaking point, was one among numerous scenes that seemed to indicate Thrones isn't just keeping up to its old standards but actually learning new tricks. Another was the introduction of Samwell Tarly's life in Old Town--who knew this show, which has mastered wartime action but had never produced a quickfire sequence quite like this one, with its repetitive chamber pots to be emptied, could be quite this sharp?

As per every premiere episode of Game of Thrones, the pace is slow.
