I can't say I had "High" hopes for Galavant, but having been a fan of Timothy Olmondson from Psych for 8 years, and knowing how much he loved theater and musicals, I was hoping the show would at least be decent.

Galavant is none of those things. Galavant is essentially, BBC's Merlin with dumber humor and ... singing. Now while I am personally not a fan of the musical, I do understand that many people are. Hit shows like Nashville and Smash do extremely well. That being said, Galavant's songs are Sondheim-esque in the sense that they are sing-song cat-in-the-hat-rhyme nonsense. It's pointless and abhoringly annoying. The show is entirely unoriginal, including the humor and the decent characters can't make up for it.

Musicals are supposed to have great music. The music here is the exposition/rhyme type that a twelve-year-old would likely write if asked. Right from the beginning, the music underwhelms....and that can't be in a musical. This is why musicals in general are so tough to do. I feel for these guys...they clearly love the genre, and want it to work. But the songs should be memorable, andMusicals are supposed to have great music. I'm sure this show could be really good for some people but I just found myself not enjoying it very much. I'm giving it a 5 because even though I didn't like it that much there are other reasons that make it deserve a mixed rating.

Galavant is perhaps most watchable thanks to the fact that there isn't anything like it on TV right now, and likely never will be replicated. Beyond that, it's silly but fun--rare enough in this world.

TV audiences may not have known they needed a small-screen equivalent of Spamalot--and the network may not really know what to do with it--but Galavant turns out to be completely winning in all its cheesy glory.

Galavant is extremely silly--but at least it knows it’s silly.
