In short, the series seems to forget what it is and what it should be during this season.

Since it’s following such a well-established set of tropes, “Fate: The Winx Saga” is rarely surprising — but it is strange, in a way that’s also becoming too familiar. ... By rejecting the aesthetic and vibe of its source material entirely for a pale imitation of other YA properties, “Fate: The Winx Saga” might just end up slipping through the cracks.

If the focus was just on Bloom and how she figures out if she’s a changeling or not, that might have worked. But the “Scooby gang” approach to this story seems all too familiar, and not at all interesting.

It has questionable things to say about foster families, punitive justice, and even genocide, toying with tired both-sideisms that continue to plague TV to this day, and confuse even the show’s main cast with a lack of nuance. This may be a setup for interesting developments in a prospective second season, but unfortunately, I’m left feeling like Fate has little to offer beyond obvious pop culture references and crooning indie pop musical cues. Fate: The Winx Saga fails to dazzle at every juncture.
