Once the first few episodes have established the main story threads — Luke’s pursuit of Kate, a feud between the AV and theater kids that Luke attempts to squelch by teaming up to make a ’50s-style sci-fi movie starring Oliver and Emaline, a character contemplating a step out of the closet — Everything Sucks! manages to calm down and, like Kate, just exist. And it’s much more endearing in that mode: a lovable mix of elements from a lot of Netflix’s other recent YA series like Stranger Things, The End of the F***ing World, Big Mouth, and more, that also manages to feel distinctly like its own thing. These teens are selfish, sure, but they’re also more ambitious and earnest than they ever want to admit. When Everything Sucks! lets them realize that and let go of the idea that everything might just suck, it becomes much more comfortably quirky in its own way, its unabashedly bleeding heart in the right place. Everything Sucks! has its heart in the right place. It wants to be good. It wants to be funny and, maybe more importantly, it aims to be earnest and sweet nearly as much as it wants to be hip and cool. It never really becomes what it wants, though, always shooting itself in the foot, but there are hints that something better is deeper inside or perhaps a season away (if people still wait around for those kinds of delayed discoveries). It's beautiful simple as the nineties makes you go back in time and reminds how good that time was.

First and foremost, this is a show about relationships, self-identify, and the awkwardness that comes from being a teenager. The characters are well written and realistic, almost to the point they make you cringe. They are teenagers after all and do very teenager type things. The characters are well written and realistic, almost to the point they make you cringe. They are teenagers after all and do very teenager type things. For example, asking your crush out very publicly in front of the rest of the school, putting your crush in an awkward predicament. At every moment of the awkward relationship this show puts a lot of time on, I kept finding myself telling my TV screen "No... just... no." but in a way I could really bond with it.

There's something nice about it being a nostalgic school piece in the fact that it takes simplicity over adding any additional drama or plot. While I loved the show it's most commonly compared to, Stranger Things, this one had a much simpler feel where you could spend time connecting more with the characters and their relationships/struggles.

Some minor downsides, it focuses a lot on two main characters and their parents and you don't get as much screen-time with the other characters. This is really unfortunate as those characters are also interesting and could use more screen-time/development. They manage to hold their own though even with their limited presence.… Expand

Just absolutely love this show! 'Everything Sucks' is a well-written show with a great cast and a realistic story. Lots of 90's nostalgia and an amazing soundtrack! Netflix Has to make another season. Please.

Everything Sucks! was a charming look at those sweet, yet awkward teen years during that specific period in the mid-90's when everything felt like it would be that way forever. The mid-90's setting was well done and the acting got better with each episode. The inclusion of a young girl realizing she may be gay was also wonderful to watch and appropriately handled. I would have liked to see the story expand into a second season, just because of how much I was charmed by the characters, but all's well that ends well.… Expand

I can understand the comparison with Stranger Things with making it a nostalgia fest and the casting but in my opinion, that's where the comparison should end. It is an easy to watch love triangle fest. Where the characters change when one part of the triangle does. A série tenta entrar no mesmo patamar de “Stranger Things” quando o assunto é “vamos reviver toda a cultura dos anos noventa e colocar em uma tela”. É perceptível que houve várias pesquisas relacionadas à programas, roupas, músicas e filmes da época, assim como ST. Uma coisa que me deixou incomodado durante a experiência de maratonar a série foi o enquadramento + zoom que acontece muitas, muitas vezes mesmo durante os episódios. Geralmente o enquadramento está normal e do nada surge um zoom desnecessário no rosto do personagem, o zoom é manual e a câmera fica tremendo, como se fosse um filme caseiro. Fora isso, tudo perfeito.… Expand
