It's really funny how so many people think that "Stranger Things" did invent the eighties as setting. Even funnier is the fact that this show is not even set in the eighties.
Everyone who is seriously comparing these two shows has not the slightest clue about what is going on in either show. Only comparison that is justified is with '88 "The Wonder Years"!

"Everything Sucks!" is a very charming Coming of Age - Series about love, friendship, pain and self-discovery. It does a few things wrong but that doesn't really matter to me - somehow it matches with the overall idea of this show.
Its one of those little Netflix Shows which remind me of why I'm paying for this service.

I can understand the comparison with Stranger Things with making it a nostalgia fest and the casting but in my opinion, that's where the comparison should end. It is an easy to watch love triangle fest. Where the characters change when one part of the triangle does. It has legs to get better and stronger in season 2 now a lot of the stories have been set up. Don't get me wrong, I love Stranger Things, but maybe a few of us, Netflix viewers I mean, were hoping this show would fill our Stranger Things void and were disappointed? I would be lying if I said I didn't get the same warm feeling about our young characters when romance blooms, but other than that, "Everything Sucks!" has an entirely different feel. This isn't a harrowing drama full of twists and a convoluted plot line but rather offers an accessible show, full of warmth with a focus on the intertwining relationships of teenagers. Perhaps being born in the 90s myself I shared the heartache experienced by some characters but what I found most striking, interesting and something I know (in retrospect) friends of mine have experienced during their teenage years but I did not, is coming to terms with one's homosexuality at a time when sex can be most confusing.
I feel a lot of people below have used the word "charming" and this show is exactly that. This reminds me more of "The Breakfast Club" than anything else, where even the most begrudging characters have redeeming qualities. Would like to see more peripheral character development in Season 2, but otherwise an easy watch for those looking for something a little more on the feel good side.

Just like someone else said on here. Everything sucks is truly a stranger things want to be cringe fest. I understand the message was positive to shed light on same sex dating but honestly this show did not hit the mark and would only be great to a very small demographic. I even had to question myself on some of the scenes and ask myself if they went way to far with things using children.

Everything from the use of the song "Wonderwall" by Oasis to the use of tiny televisions for daily school news. The show features unknown actors reminiscent of "Freaks and Geeks" when it debuted on television. The episodes are 20 minutes in length. Each episode details the lives of students in the av club and drama club. Much like the rivalry in "Freaks and Geeks," respectively, the tension between the two clubs is felt in every episode. I am currently binge watching this show. Because I miss a good teen comedy. Everything from the hopeless romantic character, Luke O'Neil to the misunderstood outcast, Kate Messner to the protagonist's hapless freinds, Tyler and Mcquaid. Its a really charming show. Comparisons are inevitably drawn to Freaks and Geeks and Stranger Things. Instead of being treated as a stand alone show, it is compared and contrasted and not given a fair evaluation. Sure, its not ground breaking. Does it need to be? Its entertaining, well acted and puts a smile on my face.

Who does not love nostalgia? We look at the past because many times it brings us fond memories, especially when it comes to such a generational leap but I feel that nostalgia is getting overused and this Netflix production, although it has a good quality, does not really offer something substantial or more striking, it was too basic.

This is just a magical, enjoyable, funny, heartwarming show. I was in high school in the early 1990s, and it would have taken a lot of courage and inner strength to come out as gay then. It would still be hard today, but back then, they are really courageous and role models to millions today.

Even if social empowerment and intelligent retro takes on modern issues aren't your thing, well

The mid-90's setting was well done and the acting got better with each episode. The inclusion of a young girl realizing she may be gay was also wonderful to watch and appropriately handled. I would have liked to see the story expand into a second season, just because of how much I was charmed by the characters, but all's well that ends well.

Lots of nostalgia in this series which is one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much. The title of this show didn't really make sense to me as the tone of the show isn't what you expect it to be from the title. A pretty well written show that shows a lot of character development and some great plot points. If you grew up in the 90s this show is for you.

For example, asking your crush out very publicly in front of the rest of the school, putting your crush in an awkward predicament. At every moment of the awkward relationship this show puts a lot of time on, I kept finding myself telling my TV screen "No... just... no." but in a way I could really bond with it.

There's something nice about it being a nostalgic school piece in the fact that it takes simplicity over adding any additional drama or plot. While I loved the show it's most commonly compared to, Stranger Things, this one had a much simpler feel where you could spend time connecting more with the characters and their relationships/struggles.

Some minor downsides, it focuses a lot on two main characters and their parents and you don't get as much screen-time with the other characters. This is really unfortunate as those characters are also interesting and could use more screen-time/development. They manage to hold their own though even with their limited presence.

Everything Sucks! often falls back on its “Hey, remember the ’90s?” trappings to try to make up for a lack of consistent depth. ... Once you get about halfway through the season, “Everything Sucks!” dials in; it starts trusting its story about Kate, the narrative gets the go-ahead to “giddy up!” and things really start clicking.
