The only possible reason for tuning in to Down and Out is to watch Mike the Dog do tricks and Anita Morris do aerobics. [24 July 1987, p.C7]

What we've got here is a standard family sitcom, with an extra character thrown in when he's needed to move the plot along, and thrown out when he's not needed. You know, if Rin Tin Tin and Lassie could have their own TV shows, why couldn't Mike? [25 July 1987, p.C-11]

Even though microphones were invented some time ago, most of those in the cast have been instructed, or allowed, to shout out their lines. An old television maxim: The louder the lines are shouted, the unfunnier they probably are. Down and Out in Beverly Hills breaks no rules, least of all that one. [25 July 1987, p.B1]
