This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this was a pretty good and solid series; Not the best one but surely a good one; I liked Jodie and the Graham-Ryan relationship development. I think Yaz had nearly no space of development and that's a pity, I hope they give her some moments to shine in the next series. I loved the Thijarians and Demons of the Punjab, a wonderful hybrid between a pure historical episode and a normal "alien come to earth" episode. Expand

I have to completely agree with the review of Recthed:

Female time lord? River Song was kind of a time lord ... and she was FANTASTIC.. sardonic, sharp as a razor, devilishly fun and memorable. A bit chunky and not some magazine cover ideal of beauty yet she was sexy as hell.. This is dreck. Social justice banality in the form of entertainment? No thank you. SJW are like the borg..

MY Doctor as they say is Patrick Troughton although I remember Hartnell in the role. There were some poor years in my opinion, especially in the 80's when I only just managed to hold on for the ride as the scripts and actors weren't the best. However when it disappeared from our screen in 1989 I did start to miss the show. We were lucky in as much as we were starting to find missing episodes and then Big Finish stepped in to carry on the storytelling. I enjoyed the Film despite the Half Human quote but at least it gave Sylvester McCoy a decent farewell.
I was over the moon when it was announced in 2004 that it was returning under RTD and again when a respected actor, Christopher Eccleston, was to be the new Doctor. I can honestly say that I loved the whole new era of Doctor Who and the actors who played them. I was so overwhelmed by Matt Smith that he soon became my second favourite Doctor after Pat Troughton. All 4 actors to play the doctor would be in my top 7 which isn't bad!
When it was announced that a female was going to play the Doctor I was excited to see what they would bring to the role. I had seen Jodie Whittaker in many TV dramas and the film Attack the Block. I was pleased again because I liked her work. At the time my wife ( a fan of the show who won a competition back in 1975 and met Tom Baker ) and my WHO friends were not at all happy with the changes, chibnall and Whittaker etc. How I wish I had listened to them.
I watched the first episode and was so underwhelmed I was in shock! I gave it another 5 episodes before I made a decision not to watch it again. Apart from Poor acting, the scripts being hollow and the current SJW agenda I was embarrassed to be a white straight male viewer as I was constantly told I was either a racist, a bad Dad or just plain evil!
This is supposed to be a Sci-Fi show not a political broadcast on behalf of the SJW Snowflakes!
So after over 50 years I am now leaving this show behind with a heavy heart and hope I live long enough to see it return to some normalsey !

In every season of Doctor Who, I had those moments where I was seriously baffled, shocked, tense and just ENTERTAINED. This season had NO SINGLE moment like this. I do not know if it's the new filming style, the actors, the accents or just the completely different atmosphere, but I know one thing for sure: This season ruined everything for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well I stuck it to the bitter end and no the season didn't improve, terrible from start to finish, but that won't stop the BBC claiming my viewing as proof that viewing figures are the best every.
Like many I welcomed the first female doctor, but sadly Whittaker was given an impossible mission to rescue the poor scripts, limited character development and amateurish directing. That latter point seems to be missed by many, when you see the doctor look into a tank that we're told is filled with decaying human corpses and her reaction is rather less emotional than staring into a cup of tea you have to point the finger straight at the director for not retaking it. This was played out over and over again throughout the season, Whittaker must be dismayed how amateurish this has made her look.
Sci-fi is always full of holes requiring major suspension of disbelief but this series is the most challenging ever even for loyal fans like myself. The writer just couldn't be bothered to make any attempt at continuity or credibility. It started in the first scene of the first episode when she fell from space onto a train and just stood up and brushed herself down like superwoman. Minutes later Whittaker is tasked with making us believe she's afraid of falling off a crane! The final straw for me is that the writer has done what all previous writers managed to resist, at least some degree, and turned the sonic screwdriver into a magic wand pure and simple, too much Harry Potter.
Just give up BBC and put this tripe on CBBC where it belongs.

Season 11 of Doctor Who is a prime example of what happens when Leftists with a social/political agenda get a hold of an iconic franchise and use it as a soapbox delivery system for everything they believe to be correct. What could have been an opportunity to capitalize on an amazing new shakeup in the form of a female Doctor has descended into SJW madness of the highest caliber, with every single episode acting as a wagging finger in the faces of viewers, reminding them of their personal accountability for everything wrong with society. Doctor Who has descended from a bright, quirky and imaginative science fiction series to a propaganda machine. Pointing this out leads to the obvious retaliatory tactic from folks on the Left: claims of bigotry, racism, misogyny, rinse/repeat. Ironically, the show itself promotes most of these negative labels.

The massive decline in ratings throughout the season (with no bounce-back, I might add) means that viewer curiosity about the potential for the new Doctor started very strong and optimistic, with hopes quickly dashed throughout the series run. The season began with almost 11 million viewers, indicating that audiences were indeed receptive to seeing a female Doctor in the lead role. Now, that number has plunged to nearly 6 million through the course of less than a dozen episodes. The claim is that ratings are actually up for the first time since Matt Smith's departure as the Doctor, and that's very correct. However, the show has been in a continuous downward slide ever since, which doesn't exactly say much for Season 11's progress.

The truth is far more simple. The episodes are boring, the characters are flat, the messages are preachy and tiresome, and Jodie Whittaker hasn't made the role her own. A fine actress in her own right, Whittaker is hopelessly out of her element with Doctor Who, taking bits and pieces of previous Doctors (most notably David Tennant) and attempting to craft a familiar motif. That's not how the Doctor works, unfortunately. Each Doctor is absolutely different from the last, which is what made Tom Baker an iconic fan favorite to this very day. Baker once famously stated that netting the role of Doctor Who meant that he could play Tom Baker all day long, and he was 100% right. Whittaker has failed to do this. The blame isn't all on her. Series showrunner Chris Chibnall has done a horrible job of taking the series over from predecessor Steven Moffatt, and used Doctor Who as a propaganda vehicle for the increasingly radicalized-Left BBC, of whom he shares the same ideology. The result are some downright ill-advised episodes such as Rosa, which have undoubtedly alienated a large chunk of U.S. audiences who don't take too kindly to being reminded of past transgressions that they had no part of, to begin with. Every episode is littered with an SJW propaganda message. Suddenly, white males are more villainous than Daleks. White people in general are seemingly all racist. Single white fathers should be shamed, ridiculed and attacked. America is racist. Men should be emasculated at every turn. Male companions are cowardly, dense or incapable, while female companions leap into danger without a thought, and are always the smart leaders.

This is what Chris Chibnall is trying to tell you.

Audiences watch Doctor Who for escapism, not to be preached to by radical Leftists who think they are better than everyone else, and openly proclaim it whenever someone points out this uncomfortable truth. As the SJW/P.C. landscape continues to cave in on itself and lose support day after day, it's astonishing to see these outlets double down on truly bad ideas, to the ruin of all. Had Chibnall and the BBC learned a valuable lesson from the destruction of the Star Wars franchise at the hands of Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson, this crisis could have been avoided. We could have had a dynamic, diverse cast of characters following a female Doctor through amazing and fun romps throughout the galaxy. Instead we have an obviously designed cast where all the men are either dimwits, cowards or villains (save one), and all the women are leaping into the fray like superheroes. I've yet to see both happening at once, this Season.

Recent comments by Jodie Whittaker have done nothing to help matters, either. Instead of using her position to effect some change on the show, she followed suit and directly criticized viewers who are seeing the show for what it has really become. She even remarked that Doctor Who's 50 year history was viewed entirely through the "white male gaze," an astonishingly awful and ignorant thing to say, by any measure! Not a great way to win them over! There's lots of talk of Chibnall and Whittaker leaving the show after either this Season or next, and unless both mend their ways and change their attitudes (unlikely), this will continue to send Doctor Who into a downward spiral, circa 1989 all over again. We all know what will happen then.

There are some serious issues with cinematography and cutting all over the place, taking the pacing completely out of some scenes, even to the point where they couldn't be bothered to film the Doctor swimming to save somebody, they just cut straight to the point where she arrives on land, this also happens when the Doctor first lands, its completely laughable directing at times.
The CGI is admittedly okay, but it never was great to begin with being a TV show and all.
The soundtrack is absolutely meh for Doctor Who, I don't even think the Doctor has her own theme like Smith and Tennant had, and if she does I didn't notice which sums up the soundtrack, "huh I didn't notice." And Doctor Who has the backing of the BBC ochestra, who has always done a phenomenal job.

The Doctor is so badly written and acted, its a joke, there was a certain nuance to previous Doctors but none of that is here, I don't feel that this is an old time travelling adventurer, its just somebody cosplaying the doctor, badly, even to the point where they rip dialogue from previous Doctors and Jodie adds nothing to the role, no personality other than snark and condescension, I hope she gets a decent arc to kill her off, but thats the only nice thing I can say really.

All the episodes are completely standalone, which would be okay if they were written well, but they aren't and they are so cringy. The companions this time are so weak, other than Bradley who actually has an arc they are all forgettable, the only piece of writing that tried to get me endeared to them was about their racial struggles or politics...wow, as if there was any other way to write people of colour, like I don't know, giving them actual character, struggle and personality, race is not a good thing to base your characters around even bill was more tolerable than these guys because it wasn't about her sexuality 24/7. The cripple doesn't count as a struggle, he is very inconsistent with his disability to the point where I think the writers forgot he had one and he's literally running with no issues, not to mention this makes the Doctor an irresponsible **** for allowing somebody who is physically challenged go on adventures where she is running from danger 24/7...oh and his mother was killed by an alien...so this makes it even less dangeous somehow??? The companions also somehow have more knowledge and capable than the Doctor at times, making the Doctor really dumb and stupid in some parts.
I'm going to admit I didn't watch all the episodes, I tried, I really did, but it was just so bad, I watched the first 2 episodes fully then from that point tried to dip my toes back in but there was just always something awful with each episode, whether it be the bad acting or writing. I completely stopped watching the final episode when the point where the Doctor actually tries to justify using a bomb, "because she can", thats not the Doctor. You know, when people said to SJWs, "if you want to make something, make your own", we didn't mean infiltrate nerd culture and ostracize white males who have supported the very shows you have destroyed, and I mean LITERALLY supported since white British working class males are who pay taxes for the BBC to make this crap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I remember when Jodie got cast and we were looking forward to a fresh start. Now look what her and Chris Chibnell have done to a beloved TV franchise.
Where do I begin on how bad this series was!?! Lets start with the things that were good. The music, Ryan was alright, Graham was brilliant, anddddd………. nope, that's it.
Writing - Worst of NuWho, so dull, un inspiring, and not engaging to watch at all. So much PC s**t
Villains - Worst of NuWho, not scary at all, or intimidating whatsoever. Why were so many white men the villain, or made to look bad too??? I know this series is PC and that, but wow. FFS we went from the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Weeping Angels, the Silence, the Sontarons, to a space racist, Stitch, and a f**cking FROG!!!!!!
Doctor - Worst of NuWho, she just isn't the Doctor, she is terrible. She isn't dark, and I can never take her seriously, omg. The darkest thing she has done is give King James the silent treatment, Oh how dark?!?!?!?!!!! She is shocking, and people need to open their god damn eyes to her s**t.
Yaz - The most useless, unimportant thing I've ever seen on a TV program. I swear if the Doctor and her start making out and having a relationship, That's it. I'm so done.
So, Series 11 - Worst of NuWho, and I believe all doctor who too.
What hurts more is that Jodie didn't take the job because she loved the role, or she is a fan of the show, she took it to be the first woman, so people should deal with it???????
Jodie. You. Are. C**P, utter S**T. F**K OFF back to Broadchurch with Chibnall, and take your agendas with you.

I'm very progressive yet the pontificating in each episode (I only made it to the horrid space hospital before I quit) was way over the top. Upon seeing the abysmally low audience score for DW S11, the temptation might be to disbelieve it - perhaps as proof of trolling, or of mass automated hacking. The problem with this theory is that the vast majority of reviews here are well-reasoned, and clearly very human. I would now like to add my own thoughts to the mix.

My wife and I are long-term Doctor Who fans. We have a massive Classic Who DVD collection, we've watched every New Who episode multiple times, we made two 'pilgrimages' to the DW experience in Cardiff - we even had a TARDIS at our wedding! And yet, Doctor Who Series 11 was a massive disappointment.

    The pro's:
[a] The main theme is very well done - with nods to the classic era, and a meaty dubsteo feel, it works very well. (Especially when the doctor smashed through the train in the first episode, and we got our first taste of it.)
[b] Bradley Walsh is very good - he should have either been cast as the doctor, or made the only companion.
[c] The cinematography is ok - not great, but decent.

... And that's it. I honestly can't think of a single other positive. The con's:
[A] Jodie Whitaker is horribly miscast. I'm not intrinsically opposed to the doctor being a woman, but the decision should have been narrativally justified, and not just thrust upon the audience. In any case, there are better female actors for the role - Olivia Coleman, for example. Jodie's performances are horrendously ill-judged, feeling like a pastiche of Matt Smith and David Tennant's wackier (and more irritating) moments. Her physicality is exaggerated, and her humour falls flat.
[B] There are simply too many companions, two of whom are utterly forgettable. Tosin Cole's acting is also dreadful at times.
[C] The TARDIS set is abysmal. Absolutely awful, the worst I've ever seen.
[D] The ambient music is repetitive and nowhere near epic enough. The sombre, more low-key feels works occasionally, but for the majority of the time it simply doesn't fit what we're watching.
[E] There is simply no connection to the show's 55 year history - almost no mythology, apart from cringeworthy 'banter-ish' moments in which Chibnall sought to imitate Moffat's throwaway lines about the Doctor's wacky anecdotes. It's as if he doesn't care about the history, and it shows.
[F] The choice of a female doctor was simply NOT well-established - it was not justififed in the context of the mythology, or in the context of the narrative. It comes off as cheap pointscoring, yet another victim of the political machinations of the BBC.
[G] The editing is often very poor, and the pacing is unbelievably dull. My wife and I were bored during many episodes. Whereas in previous seasons we would have arrived at the main thrust of any given story or action setpiece, in this season we spend ages being given unnecessary details, or being shown rather uninteresting locales.
[H] The aliens are unimaginative, and the enemies are not at all menacing. Most of the time, they're just straight white men. (A space racist? REALLY?!)

In short, this season is a failure. There are some bright moments, but they are few, and nowhere near bright enough. Doctor Who S11 was an experiment, and it has failed.

The show had started to descend into the SJW lunacy midway through Peter Capaldi's era, but those shows were as nothing compared to what series 11 would unleash on its viewers. A more preachy, self righteous load of far-leftist pompous **** is impossible to imagine. Gone is the sense of adventure, exploration and jeopardy posed by a variety of malevolent alien forces, instead we are offered the villainy of humanity as a replacement, or to be more accurate, the villainy of the straight white male, the Moriarty to the SJW's Sherlock Holmes. The villains in this series include a substitute Trump, a white racist from the future, and a single father - seriously. And as for the worst case of casting for the title role, Jodie Whittaker, her appalling acting and her shameless plagiarism of Tennant's and Smith's Doctors are only matched by her vilification for the original series, which she described as celebrating the white male gaze. How ironic then that it is Bradley Walsh, a white male actor who landed the role of Graham without any help from the BBC's diversity and equity strategy, provided the only contribution of value in the worst series in the history of Doctor Who. The SJW infestation and destruction of once popular and cherished franchises will be taught in history lessons in the future, and Doctor Who will perhaps be the textbook case in those lessons. I think the show needs to be axed asap. I can't see a way out for the show for at least 10 years thanks to Chibnall and Whittaker, the icebergs to Doctor Who's Titanic. Expand

Season 10 was very messy and I was convinced a new show runner and actor would give the show what it needed, how wrong I was. This season not only was the worst season of Doctor Who, but they managed to take such an interesting concept, with plenty of history and imagination behind it and strip all that way to leave nothing but a husk of what it use to be.

To me it feels like they watched one episode of the show and took note of only the obvious elements and assumed that made Doctor Who what it is, like for example... space time the Tardis and the docto- Well at least I wish I could say the Doctor, but they were clearly absent throughout this series.

Jodie Whitaker from what I have seen can be an incredible actor, but what I witnessed wasn't at all believable and just screamed bad acting and it's not just Jodie either, a lot of the supporting cast have been sub par and I aren't even sure if it's the direction they've been given or the actors themselves. I definitely have noticed the worst of the episodes tend to be the ones written by the lead writer and it doesn't help that the Chris Chibnall's past work on Doctor Who has been bland and forgettable. Which is sad considering his other works. I just can't understand why he took the job.

He clearly oversees every episode and the work he does do is bland and is just not interesting, especially for a science fiction show. In fact sometimes it's been outright amateurish, for example a lot of stories he has written feel very rushed and have pacing problems. The Ghost Monument and Arachnids in the UK had it pretty noticeably.

The Ghost Monument has a lot of build up and takes it's time to build atmosphere, but the pay off is so underwhelming I won't spoil, but basically they reach the end a short conversation happens and then that's it, no bigger conflict.

Arachnids In The UK, although had better pacing, the resolution again suffered from the same problems and just had the story abruptly finishes and in this case it was even worse, because we don't learn what happens to the spiders in the end, which was at least suppose to be the focus of the entire episode, especially given it's in the episode's name.

I feel I need to address the elephant in the room. A lot of people have been upset regarding Doctor Who with all the politics and Political Correctness being injected into the show and honestly? I don't blame them, so many people have been so much more vocal about this compared to last few seasons and I feel if there wasn't a problem you wouldn't have such a divide amongst fans of the show. In the defence of the show changing the gender of the character I will say Jodie is an easy target, given she is at the centre of all this, but I do think she's not done herself any favours.

Jodie being in the limelight I do feel has an obligation to represent the show and it's fan base and she definitely has been "representing us", but not in a way that promotes good will and in fact furthers this divide amongst fans. Saying that the show appeased the white male gaze and dismissing any criticisms towards the show as being bigoted, misguided and I won't say those people don't exist because they definitely do, but most decent people aren't sexist or racists or any kind of "ist" and this mentality even leaks over into the actual community itself having fans calling people who don't like the female doctor as sexists misogynists.

I am a human and respect other human's, no matter what race, religion, background, gender, sexuality or whatever... TV shouldn't be written with the aim of purely being diverse. I absolutely welcome it, but it should be unconscious and not artificially injected. In addition we should be hiring on the basis of skill level and qualification, rather than a diversity quota. I didn't want to focus on this stuff as I want to review the actual show itself, but given it's so deeply rooted it's hard to avoid.

I think a competent actor or show runner, could do a better job at portraying this type of version of the character, but I don't think the intentions were in the write place and this gravely impeded the show. Which is a shame, especially considering she was going to be the first woman to play the character. I think this idea could work, but I definitely feel we should go back to the familiar, at least for a while until trying this again.

Like I said this could of played out a lot better, but instead of good story telling this just became a mess of politics and trying to write a show based on how forward thinking it is, to be point where the thinking is flawed. I hope they make a lot of changes next series, but they have a heck of a lot of changes to make, to make this work and to save this failure of a season. Given what has happened though I really aren't holding my breath. I welcome a 5-10 year break.

Suddenly because she is female, she's passive, she's "less arrogant", and she's also no longer the cleverest person in the room. It's an insult to those of us long term female fans who wanted to see ourselves in the Doctor. No longer does the Doctor save the day instead a convenient plot device appears to save it for her. The villains are forgettable as are the plots themselves. Any action has been thrown out. There's no risk or consequences. There's no goofiness or fun. All the moral lessons are still there, but instead of being entertaining and delightful, they're presented with heavy-handed exposition. None of the kids will watch it anymore. Yay for the "casual viewers" that the show is now catering to, but this is no longer Doctor Who for most of the long-term fans.

One might be concerned that there might be very little compelling sci-fi themes from this inexperienced writing team - and you'd be right. This is Doctor Who done in a daytime soap fashion and as you'd expect, it's not pleasant viewing.

I watch Doctor Who for its escapism. I love its monsters, creativity, mythology and humour. All of which have been bled out of the show this year, in its pursuit of a new, broader audience. It is devoid of action, suspense, tension and stakes. Ultimately, it feels very derivative from past series.

I've always thought Doctor Who works best as an action adventure series. However, If you want to attempt a more methodical, character lead format, the writing has to be vastly superior to this - an order of magnitude better. The characters come of as weak and one dimensional. We can't enjoy the wonder of travelling the universe because they don't have any. We never get scared, because they don't. We never feel a sense of accomplishment, because they never have a mountain to climb. Character development has taken a backseat to endless dreary exposition and anti-climax.

How a new production team can be creatively bankrupt in their first year, is beyond me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Series 11 of the TV show masquerading as Doctor Who has been astonishingly, unbelievably awful. Watching it has felt like observing a slow motion car crash.

I have no problem with BBC making a bland, tension-free program about a slightly overenthusiastic, vaguely annoying, totally uncharismatic primary school teacher who travels the universe, with 3 dull, characterless, ’friends’ meeting dull, unimaginative aliens that pose no threat in unimaginative stories laden with padding, dreary exposition, technobabble and laboured, simplistic, laughable lectures in political correctness.

However, I do have a problem with calling that program ‘Doctor Who.’ Based on 50-plus years of the show The Doctor should be funny, eccentric, engaging, charismatic and, above all, ALIEN. Jodie Whittaker has failed to realistically display any of these characteristics. I don't know who she is but she is NOT The Doctor.

...and let's start the new Doctors tenure with her falling into outer space! Gosh how will she survive! How exciting! ....ah, she survives by falling through the roof of a train and getting to her feet unharmed. How clever was that resolution? (Clue: not clever at all)

...and did they run out of money half way through redesigning the TARDIS ? It looks like a control column and ...lots of empty shady space. What a letdown.

...and let's use sniper robots in not one, but TWO episodes and make them absolutely useless and unable to hit a single target

...and let's have King James I turn up wandering alone in the middle of the North of England...because the monarchs of England are famous for doing that

...and the frog was not clever or imaginative. It was a sign that the writer didn't have a clue what to do with his story.

...and let's make the Thajirans deadly assassins (how exciting) ...then change our minds and make then desperately tedious watchers of the people as they die.

...and let's make the season finale so tedious that we even admit in the dialogue that we are devoid of new ideas and are ripping off the Season 4 finale.

So …the worst run of 10 episodes in the series 55 year history. I would prefer to see it cancelled than endure any more of this sad travesty but I see that the series will return in 2020 after an extended break….I guess Chris Chibnell needs to recharge his creative batteries, such as they are, after giving us this pile of manure. Please let me know when a new show runner, new lead actor/actress and companions are assigned and I will start watching again.

Having watched every episode I've never had more mixed feelings for a series of doctor who.

First off the good: I think Jodie Whittaker is great. She completely ditches "I'm too cool for this" vibe that all previous doctors have had since 2005; instead we've got a doctor who happily admits she loves being surprised by all the universe has to offer. She's likable, passionate and dorky.

She's likable, passionate and dorky. If she was given one or two great episodes I could well see her becoming my second favorite doctor (I can't see anyone ever toppling Ecclestone for me).
Secondly, I enjoyed Bradley Walsh. This was definitely the thing I was most apprehensive about going into the series, but having an older person in the Tardis who isn't falling over to impress the doctor at every moment is a nice new dynamic.
The more straightforward episodes without any great season arc was probably what we needed after several years of increasingly convoluted Moffat stories.
Production values are good, and even with a few moments of dodgy CGI, Doctor who has never looked so good.
It takes you was the highlight of the series; starting off intriguing and creepy and ending in a sequence that was gloriously balls-out crazy.

The meh: Ryan and Yas are both pretty unremarkable sidekicks. There's a solid attempt at an arc for Ryan and grant, but there's no interesting relationship between any other pairing of our 4 main characters.
Also none of the monsters were very memorable. Moffat's greatest strength was thinking up cool monsters with unique abilities, and that was really missed here, with the only villain who gets more than one episode being a guy in a rubber suit who just shoots people.
There wasn't much humor in the series as a whole. There were some light-hearted moments, but very few jokes that actually made me laugh.

The Bad: Every one of Chibnall's episodes had a massive plot hole; seriously, I'll list each one:
Ep 1: why didn't Tim Shaw activate the DNA bombs straight away?
Ep 2: why were there all those killer Robots around that temple, and how had they stayed operational for so long, and why are they so bad at their one job?
Ep 3: The racist alien had been in Alabama several weeks before the doctor arrived; why hadn't it already sent Rose back in time? We saw she wasn't hard to find.
Ep 4: Why is locking the spiders in a small vault to starve such a kind and natural death? and why didn't the mother spider follow the vibrations of the music like all the rest?
Ep 6: Impossibly unlikely coincidence of the medical ship finding them. Why didn't the detailed file on the Pting mention that it eats energy? How can flying a ship kill you? Why does a ship with enough equipment to put back together four people who have been blown up not have enough medication to treat pilot's heart for more than a few hours, or deliver a baby properly?
Ep 10: What was Tim Shaw's plan when he confronted Grant? He just walked up to him and let himself get shot.
(eps 4 and 7-9 not written by Chibnall)
Crucially I found every episode lacking in tension: it was very rare that I felt that anyone was in actual danger. Maybe this was because the doctor, who is supposed to care about her companions, keeps on encouraging them to wander off on their own, surely she wouldn't do that if there was actual danger. Or maybe it was because in several episodes we say the villain have a chance to kill a character and not take it.

In summary, I found lots to like in this series, but the writing, which at times was mystifyingly bad, dragged it down so it falls well short of being great.

The new Doctor is constantly out of breath, confused and generally clueless, like she's barely keeping up with an episode that's most of the time not that fast paced or exciting.
The basic plots of the episodes are good when they're not outright copied from previous seasons, but the script themselves are lackluster and miss every single opportunity o raise above, to have depth or pathos.

The biggest sin of this season is that it's not offensively bad, it's boringly mediocre, which in entertainment is a mile worse than outrage inducing crap.
And they have the guts to take a year of, after taking a year off to "have time to prepare" this season. By the time Doctor Who returns it will be a miracle if anyone sticks around.

It commits the worst sin any form of entertainment can. It is just downright boring. Cliched story, caricatures of characters, predictable in basically every way.

Only positive I saw was some of the visuals in the first 10 minutes, but it seems highly apparent that they blew a lot of the budget out the gate. What is worse is that this doctor is just a knock off of the Tenant/Smith

What is worse is that this doctor is just a knock off of the Tenant/Smith doctor which is the absolute last thing Doctor who needed.

    EDIT: E02

The visuals of the intro sequence were phenomenal. However the music is off a literal beat. It is nice however to be done with Capaldi's Christmas intro with its jingle bells.

Episode 2 shows where the show is going. Completely illogical setups and predictable outcomes. For example you can see and connect the episodes "solution" a full 25 minuets before it happens showing how predictable this incarnation is.

Whitakers depiction is increasingly becoming more ridiculous and scatterbrained. She is practically a companion herself leaving this to be Doctorless Who.

In the end like most of the visuals, the new Tardis is outstanding, if an odd, eclectic feel. The shame is that long term this doctor is not up to all these slick visuals with the character being written so poorly as an imitation of far better doctors.

    Edit E03

And with that this incarnation of the doctor and almost certainly Chibnalls tenure becomes unwatchable. Much as many people predicted it becomes a breeding ground for racism, sexism and otherwise normal SJW bigotry. Bending over backwards to show the audience just how "woke" it is with its civil rights narrative. Furthermore it tries to force white guilt upon the one white companion who was already made out to be a doddering old white fool for everyone to scapegoat. It is an absolute shame that a show as venerated as Doctor Who can be dragged through the SJW muck and mire.

I have no problem with the doctor being made a woman. It could have been done so well. Had they simply had the doctor simply be a woman it might have been alright, but with this episode it removes the last shadow of doubt that this is not merely a case where actual equality is at play, but an agenda is at work that seeks to social engineer a world of equality built through inequity, and bigotry. If it cant be contained within 3 episodes, It tells you that it will undoubtedly influence and taint all the episodes of at the very least the remainder of this season.

Final Edit: This incarnation shows why the doctor is normally only allowed so many regenerations.

    Utterly heartbreaking.
Where was the Drama, the hook, the Doctor?
Jodie did a reasonable job at the beginning but really wasn't given a chance to become the doctor as the show has been ruined by a bunch of self righteous short stories that don't come together to deliver anything, making the torture of watching the series not even worth it in the end.

Watcher since Eccelston, I am in disbelief how S11 kept making me space out, almost every episode it feels like someone shoving a TV news report/social issue cake into my face when I am just trying to have an escape Sci fi experience which is what Dr. Who was for so long.
Though all of the past seasons have been cheesy beyond belief they were still imaginative and decently written, and seemed to sprinkle the social commentary in a more organic way. Forced SJW antics seems to be one of the pitfalls for the current show; some non existent writing and zero imagination and WOW the result is disastrous.
The dialogue is directly inspired from M.Night's overly expositional style, every one seem to be trying their best to make us understand what is happening as if they are answering objective exam questions factual and boring no heart, no connect.
(PS thank god Jodie 'seems' to have stopped her Sonic SwissKnife(Screwdriver)pointing/Overarm fast bowling action tht she had in the first few episodes)
The Uptick in the overall look and feel of the show seems to be an odd detriment to emotionally connecting with anything that has been going on in season 11, and that is once again because of the writing and or the extremely cringe filled dialogue which will make every day normal human beings roll your eyes to the back of your head so fast you at at risk of hurting yourself.
The editing work and shot composition is flat and bland, I was watching 'The Eleventh Hour' and I still get roped into the fun shots, some kooky editing and all the fun that is entirely missing from S11.
I am curious if my boredom stems from the outdated and stilted subject matter or is this intentional by the creators because we are going to have a beyond belief amazing climax ???
Almost all of the episodes just keep circling the same dead corpse like a bunch of brain-dead and loudmouthed vultures, just trying so desperately to appeal to demographics who would not even remember this show 2 days after it ended and casting aside us long time fans as well as straight up insulting us long time fans who are the ones keeping the IP alive.

Doctor who series has never been perfect, but I've always enjoyed each and every episode. The 11:th season has made the ultimate crime in entertainment, it has become boring. The storylines are predictable and childish, the companions, for the most part, feel pointless and the Doctor herself is uninteresting. The show also has a pandering tone throughout each episode, where you are constantly reminded how racism is bad and white men are evil. And of course racism is bad and everyone should be treated with respect, but I don't need a sci-fi show to tell me these obvious things. The show used to have a certain charm, but that charm has been murdered and we're left with an empty husk of a once great show.

Doctor Who has had it's fair share of bad episodes in the past, but the characters usually got me through those, but in this season the only character I kind of liked was Grace and then they go and kill her off in the first episode, so thanks I guess. Overall the show is boring and not worth a watch, even if you are a die-hard fan of Doctor Who and/or sci-fi.

What I like about this one is that it is the most grounded and focuses on the people again. It used to be that the show was partially about the new people the Doctor would meet along the way. But in later seasons, it became more about the concepts, and people became less important and more cannon fodder. Now, the show is back to being about the Doctor meeting new people and encouraging and experiencing the positivity of humanity even in the face of darkness. In fact, we get two historical episodes that are some of the most emotionally emotionally poignant ones they've ever done.

I'm loving Jodie Whittaker. She's sort of a combination of the entertaining Tenth and Eleventh Doctors and the more human fifth Doctor. Capaldi did a good job as the Doctor, but I was disappointed with how coldly pragmatic he could be at times. This Doctor returns to the good-natured altruism of earlier Doctors. Whittaker is charming and funny. She is also the biggest people-person of the recent Doctors. I'm actually glad that they cut down on the Doctor's ego and grandstanding.

Liking the new companions, who I think work well off of each other. Hands down the winner is Graham. It sure is a big change from tradition to go with an older companion, but his good-natured everyguyness works well as he gives some very good reactions to the craziness around him.

This season made the decision to be more accessible to new viewers by using totally new villains and monsters. Unfortunately, most of them don't really stand out. You also don't get any of those popular concept episodes that are known to appear once or twice per season. Basically, the emphasis on characters is to the detriment of other classic Doctor Who tropes. That having been said, I felt this was most consistent season in quality. There aren't any episodes that are too childish, trying too hard to be clever, or try to jam too many things into one episode.

One last issue, although death is well-known in Doctor Who, there are a couple killings in this that are a little too forced and feel cynically written.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The new season of Doctor who is a disaster. Season premiers of doctor who, almost always hooked me up, the story, the companions, the doctor everything made me want to watch more. I really wish this was the case with Season 11.

On the premiering episode, we have the doctor just bashing through the roof of a train. That's it. We also have the supporting characters that "coincidentally" know each other but we know nothing about them. Additionally, they are more stale than anything on this show. Then we have probably the most interesting character of this season, grace, just being killed. This has possibly (?) no effect on the characters attitude and behavior, besides crying for like 10 minutes. Time travel doesn't seem to impact the characters at all, like it's a thing they do every day. Every episode I am like "Ok, I'm gonna wait for the interesting part.... oh... it's finished"

No real threats. No Doctor Who Universe. No Backstories. A LOT of exposition. A LOT of "hey look at me talking all scientific-ish". No real story values. No character development. Weak writing. Awkward (to say the least) pace. Nothing.
If it weren't for the cinematography effects, music composition, jodie, and the sets (love the new TARDIS) this would have been a 0.

For the direction of the show, the effort put into going to non-UK and even non-US locations is amazing, and the level of attention and detail given to historical events is great, and I love that most antagonists have more understandable or grounded motivations. For writing in general, I will say that it feels like this has been an experimental season with some bumps in plot as a result. -However-, the ideas are great, the writing is usually smart and funny, and people are usually written like people, not tired tropes.

They're legitimately trying something new with the show and doing things the show hasn't bothered to do before, and it's really exciting to see.

The new Tardis is bland. A crystal? Seriously? It's supposed to be an engine chugging/screeching through time and space.

Spoiler alert... Here's my personal mini review of each episode so far...

Ep.1 - Tooth faced Mr. Freeze alien uses super snake computer thingie to hunt down a spineless schmuck.
Ep.2 - Companions are impervious to the vacuum of space, trek across world to find the Tardis all the while avoiding super ghost death race that reminds me of WonTon soup.
Ep.3 - White supremacist from thousands of years in the future travels back in time to stop Rosa Parks. Yep. Because white supremacy still exists in the future in a SJW writer's mind.
Ep. 4 - Fonald Rump dumps toxic waste creating massive super spiders. Loud rap music saves the day. Guns are evil, Trump is evil, blah, blah, blah.
Ep. 5 - Nibbler from Futurama terrorizes hospital spaceship. A pregnant dude.
Ep. 6 - Evil assassin aliens who aren't evil anymore come to India. Muslims are not the bad guy. Watching my fingernails grow was more entertaining than this episode.
Ep. 7 - Angry white male tries to destroy space Amazon with explosive bubble wrap. Doctor is too stupid to realize that she is being tracked while wearing an ankle bracelet.
Ep. 8 - Revisiting witch trials. Evil mud aliens escape from tree prison. A high tech tree prison that was destroyed with a few whacks from an axe. Because genius super aliens never could have anticipated that happening in a time when wood was one of the primary sources of fuel. (Good Lord the writing is complete crap.)
Ep. 9 - Cabin in Norway. Blind girl. Dr is foiled by someone cutting her string. Talking frog. Longest most boring episode of Dr. Who...ever?
Ep. 10 - Probably something about global warming, guns, or evil corporations. Old white guy companion dies.

If I had to describe the new show's title sequence, I'd say swimming through disco vomit. Or diarrhea. What a fitting open for this season!

Chris Chibnall should be fired. Get the SJW out of Sci-Fi. This season is terrible.

Goes around ticking boxes (minority cast - check, equality throwback - check, minority cultural intro episode - check, women being patronised is bad - check). The writing is just SO BAD! A great example of this is the latest episode, The Witchfinders. It's not enough that we can *see* and *feel* how awkward it is when the Doctor gets patronised because she's a woman - no, the makers either think us too stupid to understand or are dogmatic on purpose, the Doctor actually has to *say* it out loud like Mr Mackey in South Park "patronising is bad MKAAAY?". Jodie Whittaker is just LOVELY and MARVELOUS and I absolutely love her as the Doctor (even though she's panting too much :D), but the rest of the companions are just... there - they're pretty/good looking people and do the job but nothing memorable, like they gave them no character apart from being minority and maybe a default sad backstory. And I understand how Doctor Who always was progressive, and I always love it for that, for 10+ years now, but this season is just subpar. Expand

Chris Chibnall has completely destroyed Doctor Who!!
I personally think that making him the show runner was a very big mistake on the BBC’s behalf, in my opinion he is a B Grade writer to say the least, and he doesn’t seem to have the ability to write a good story.

If it was my choice I’d sack Chris Chibnall, Cancel the season and go back to the drawing board.

After 6 episodes, I'm sad, clueless and frankly angry. First, the characters are such caricatures, all vapid and soppy, so obviously justifying mixity that it's on the verge of insulting. Why is that ? Doctor Who was never known to be racist, you don't need to be all-in like that !
This has nothing to do with the acting, but the writing is all that is wrong.

Unfortunately, I cannot give this season any higher than a one for many different reasons. 1. The writing in this episodes are obviously trying to be more "modern" but instead fall flat on their face when trying to replicate this. 2. It almost seems like I'm watching a different show from Doctor Who, the fact that no old characters will be returning shows this as well as the huge lack of TARDIS shown. Jodie for me unfortunately doesn't feel like The Doctor. She may be energetic and positive but has no sign of 'being the doctor', every other actor before her had that kind of feel, I'm just getting nothing from her. It's almost as if they've gone and written and entirely different show and just stamped Doctor Who on it. The cameras and increased budget is nice to see, but I'd much prefer a lower budget and better stories like the ones before it. 3. The best character by far is Graham who always makes some type of funny comment. All of The Doctor's reactions with the companions seems heavily forced with motivation and 'you can believe in yourself', instead of feeling likes friends I'm stuck thinking The Doctor is now their mother. Yaz has committed nothing to the stories and I don't see the point in having her, Ryan is average with his connected to Graham being the only likeable trait of him. Watching episodes that Chibnall has written previously like 42 in Season four and The Power of Three show reflect the sort of lazy writing and forced positive feel. The stories seem too cluttered with characters that now and then start talking about their past's for ten minutes then continue on like nothing happened. I look at the reviews by critics for the show and wonder if they've ever watched an episode of Doctor Who beforehand. 4. The acting, my god it is terrible. I've watched Jodie Whittaker in other shows such as Black Mirror or Broadchurch where she plays very different characters and wonder if she can properly portray The Doctor's quirkiness. Also, to Chris Chibnall and hopefully not any other writers, you don't have to have 90% of the episode to be exposition, like every character narrates their actions. I was at first excited when they mentioned no old characters as I'm quick sick of seeing Dalek's and Cyber-men but if it means trading them up for a smurf with a tooth fetish, some sentient rags, a cardboard cut-out racist, some mutant spiders and Stitch then this season is going to be very disappointing. They also seem to be forcing the female doctor, it has made no contribution to the story whatsoever and was probably just done in an effort to gain more watchers. Expand

There is nothing wrong with the new Doctor. The Doctor or the actor is fine and could even easily be one of the better Doctors. The issue is the writing is terrible and the companions feel like someone tried way too hard to be diverse. Pick a companion and move on. I feel like at some point K9 will show up to try and make the ratings better. Here's an idea: fire the writers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will update this review if the season gets better, but this is so far not worth watching. I do enjoy watching Jodie as the Doctor. Her characterizations are good, but the writing is awful. Slow, plodding, nonsensical, and just downright lazy. It feels like the pacing of Broadchurch with the wallpaper of Doctor Who pasted on. Nothing but the Doctor, the Tardis, and the Sonic remind us that this is the very show we thought it was.

There are so many awful moments that really bring me out of this story on so many occasions. In every one of the 5 episodes released so far, scenes where time is very clearly of the essence are brought to a screeching halt by two characters meandering down a hallway expressing things about their past that do not matter to the immediate plot. Moments where comedic timing is completely dropped and we're left wondering if the characters were intending a joke or if we missed something important. Improper pacing all around, poor set up for plot payoffs, and just way too much effort expended on the Graham/Ryan relationship while the Doctor humorlessly runs around doing things and Yaz is entirely useless.

None of the main cast seems to have true feel for their characters, and it shows. I don't blame them, I blame the writing. With the proper Who writer, we would see this cast shine. But I really don't think we have one.

And since an over-arching mystery or villain has been soundly rejected by the Chibnall, there doesn't feel like any reason to hang on watching while the cast face one bland, preachy, mindlessly uncomplicated plot after the next. Unambiguous Trumpian analogues plagued by unambiguous ends-punished-the-means analogues, Rosa Parks threatened by a somehow boring futuristic neo-nazi, and two cutthroat racers who seem terribly uninterested to reach the finish line until they do an about face and cross the threshold holding hands together just because of some trite sermon about...something. I mean, I'm a bleeding heart liberal, but this **** is just way over the top.

My only hope is that we see a change in writers that can bring us the thought-provoking, mind-blowing, and guffaw-inducing Doctor Who we've come to expect and love.

Goofy and curious, commanding and contemplative, Thirteen is already well on her way to demonstrating the complex emotional makeup that is the Doctor. She also demonstrates a cheerful, can-do spirit. ... With the exception of Tim Shaw’s unappealing self, very little about the episode feels Whovian. Gone is former showrunner Steven Moffat’s sense of play, both in the verbal sparring and convoluted storytelling.

The premiere episode here, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth,” reminded me, more than anything, of “The X-Files,” when it was really good. It takes you back to the days when Doctor Who was a fun sci-fi procedural. ... [The alien] resembles some gleaming villain out of a Marvel movie, which makes his blokey name, Tim Shaw, even more incongruously funny. This is Doctor Who at its best--nerdy and chilling and quick with a joke. And, most significantly of all, generous of spirit, a quality that simply shimmers off Whittaker.
