First review for this series. I love this show. I watched both seasons in 3 days. There's something really honest, gentle, and nuanced about this show. It's got some very funny moments, but also some really tender and sad moments. I wasn't immediately warming to the low-brow humour of Kev, but there are guys like that out there. It also took a little while to warm to Ricky's Derek, but asFirst review for this series. I love this show. I watched both seasons in 3 days. I wasn't immediately warming to the low-brow humour of Kev, but there are guys like that out there. It also took a little while to warm to Ricky's Derek, but as the show progressed he was totally believable. The scenes where he gets emotional are really quite moving. One of them in particular brought tears to my eyes. I love how much he loves animals, and the way he talks about them. His dialogue about simple things, like certain words, animals, and the curiosities of other people is written well. Ricky Gervais did a whole comedy show on animals, so I'm not surprised of the focus on it in this show. It's also cast very well, especially the actor who plays Hannah. Expand

Derek is funny, honest, sad, heartwarming, and real. I felt for all the characters and cried a few times. Ricky Gervais plays Derek as a character instead of a mockery, and this might be one of his most brilliant works ever. This show is very human.

An episode of The Office or Extras would be wasted on Derek; he’s completely happy when he’s watching an online video of little piggies and bunnies doing cute things. Derek has all the creative ambition of one of those videos, and Gervais has cast himself as the cutest bunny.

Derek is an honest and often charming endeavor.

The second season mostly upholds the first's tricky precedent, but the absence of regular Gervais associate Karl Pilkington means the yuks are a bit less hearty.
