Stargirl is a fun ride, and the performances by Bassinger and Wilson make the first episode keep a lively pace.

Even after five episodes, the new JSA still seems far removed from being able to take on these experienced supervillains. The potential for fun in the series’ future episodes likely lies in viewing their determined efforts to try. ... Most of all, though, we have to hope that Pat (Luke Wilson) takes a bigger role in mentoring these young heroes: He’s way too effective and enjoyable a character to be stuck on the sidelines for long.

Wilson’s gentle rapport with Bassinger grows exponentially. ... “Admirably” is a pretty decent descriptor for much of “Stargirl,” truth be told. This isn’t a perfect series, but there’s plenty to admire.

DC’s Stargirl gets off to a rousing, high-flying start, then loses some momentum when subsequent episodes open with deep-diving, Titans-style, -centric flashbacks. But by Episode 4, the stage is set for what is both DC Universe’s and The CW’s lightest, brightest, family-friendliest live-action superhero show yet.

DC's Stargirl emulates DC Universe's live-action series "Titans" and "Doom Patrol" by taking a way-deep dive into comic-book mythology, proceeding with a serialized story at a glacial pace...What sets it apart from those gritty efforts is a lighter tone, deriving a sense of fun from coming-of-age teen heroes mastering new powers, making the series a good fit to share with the CW.

The relationship between Courtney and Pat forms the spine of the series and it’s a welcome change of pace from the network’s twentysomething heroes. Whether that's enough to justify yet another superhero show remains to be seen.

Early episodes of Stargirl are an oddly jittery thing. ... The series starts picking up in those fourth and fifth episodes, in which Courtney begins to make friends. ... Bassinger is amiable and chipper. It's hard to say much more about her given that the role is so underwritten that she blends in with other recent blonde-teen-learning-superpowers performances.

Story-wise, Stargirl isn’t breaking many molds; the villains introduced in the first three episodes are mostly indistinguishable from a lot of the Arrowverse’s rogues gallery, and the drama between a freshly-moved teen and their step-parent is a tale as old as time. But a lot of the charm comes straight from the cast.

The series deserves a 10 for the starting 2-3 minutes of the first episode alone. I just hope they didn't blow 90% of the budget on it.

I strangely found myself interested in the series even though its teen-focused. Luke is fantastic and he plays the role perfectly; he really adds to the depth of the series. The villains are what really drive this show. They have done the right work there. Compared to the majority of superhero TV shows out there, these villains are miles apart.

The heroes' backstories are pretty well done. Though the characters themselves aren't as interesting as the villains. They need some improvement to get me to care about them. At this time I'm rooting for the villains!

The performances fromStargirl is my 2nd favorite new show of 2020, my 3rd favorite superhero show, and one of my favorite shows of all time. The performances from Luke Wilson, Neil Hopkins, Trae Romano, Anjelika Washington, Christopher James Baker, Amy Smart, Justin Austin Walker, Brec Bassinger, Neil Jackson, Meg DeLacy, Eric Goins, Cameron Gellman, Will Deusner, and Yvette Monreal were outstanding. The writing was stupendous. The character development was exceptional especially with Courtney, I love how the new JSA started out as normal teens and slowly developed into superheros but still room to grow over the seasons to come. The visual effects were phenomenal especially the Cosmic Staff, S.T.R.I.P.E, Soloman Grundy, Dragon King, and Icicle. The makeup and hairstyling was fantastic especially on Brec Bassinger, Joy Osmanski, Meg DeLacy, Anjelika Washington, Eric Goins, Lesa Wilson, Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, and Hina X. Khan. The costumes were excellent especially on Brec Bassinger, Meg DeLacy, Joy Osmanski, Eric Goins, Yvette Monreal, Cameron Gellman, Neil Jackson, Anjelika Washington, Christopher James Baker, Amy Smart, and Neil Hopkins. The fight choreography and stunt work was remarkable especially Stargirl's. This was an A+ 1st season can't wait for the next. Full Review »
