So far the acting has been very good, and they are only just introducing the main characters so it is a little early to tell just how the show will go. Still, what has been seen is showing that there will be a widespread scattering of stories underlined by an ongoing overarc of Constantine's own problems. This is usually a formula for a series worth at least 5 seasons.

The series also includes the current popular trend of Heaven/Hell being involved. Love that!

I'll happily re-review later in the season.

Great show, great acting, given the overarching plot can be a little muddled, but the individual episodes are very interesting and refreshing, and though similar to Supernatural, it gives a fresh take on the occult with John Constantine: a self centered, egocentric a**hole, and it tries to make us empathize with him and understand his actions. I've always like media that tries to take its audience out of their comfort zone (e.g. Trainspotting) and this does it well.
I must say though, don't judge this show by its first episode, whatever you do, as the first was indeed very weak, but that was because it hadn't found itself yet.

There's a bunch of supernatural shows out there these days and this one is my novella. The world of Constantine is not as dark as Walking Dead. The quirkiness and humor of the show makes it fine for regular tv and it's no more silly than any of the other supernatural shows.

Being a fan of the comic I feel they portray his world well and he's scuzzy yet likable and they should be proud of the work they're doing on Constantine. Much better than the movie. I'm sure Allen Moore has his opinions but it's a fun, light show.

    Keep making these!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An awesome, mature, and dark depiction of the iconic D.C. superhero this show combines elements of horror with fun humor. Though maybe sometimes satanic and frightening at some points this show usually shows the heroes emerging victorious. Like the Flash, this show brings to life iconic Constantine characters like Zed and Chas, and foreshadows other heroes and villains who will and might make a live-action appearance. For example, Dr. Fate's helmet is briefly shown in the pilot episode and in the behind-the-scenes, Jim Corrigan makes a live-action appearance, but his alter-ego (the Spectre) is soon to make his appearance, the Swamp Thing aka Alec Holland is briefly mentioned during a phone message, and the Medusa Mask which Psycho-Pirate wears makes a brief appearance in the seventh episode serving as a book stand. For all those fans who are seeking some horror combined with superheroes, this is the right show! Expand

Good supernatural action / thriller series. The pilot episode seemed rushed or poorly edited, almost like parts were left out maybe for time constraints. Thankfully each episode is getting better as the series progresses. The cast is talented and likeable. They all really fit their characters.

Oh, how I wish more people will like this series. I was very afraid that it would not have enough of the hard choices and bad side of the comics, to be watchable. It's true it's nicer than the comics, but it's good enough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This fall TV season has been jam packed with quality shows that makes keeping up on each one a full time job. One of the most anticipated and well received shows has been Constantine, based on the DC comic book series "Hellblazer". Producers Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer developed the show for NBC with the intent to bring a faithful adaptation of one of comics most beloved antihero's; John Constantine into our homes, and succeed they have. Handcuffed by the constraints of network TV, the show pushes the boundaries of acceptable television, while making sure that the core fans stay engaged and coming back each and every week. With this weeks midseason finale taking the show to its darkest place yet, the moment has come for John and his associates to meet their toughest test to date.
ohn Constantine (Matt Ryan) is a demonologist, exorcist and self proclaimed, master of the dark arts, who spends his time battling the inhabitants of Hell who decide to make their presence known here on Earth. John struggles with his past sins and looks to find redemption any way he can for his mistakes. One mistake he can never outlive, however, is the loss of a young child named Astra, who was drug to Hell right in front of John. The result of this incident drive Constantine away from his practices and deep into regret. After a series of events which concern John, he is reluctantly pulled back into the demonic world to protect the innocent by any means necessary. Aided by his oldest friend Chas (Charles Halford) and psychic Zed (Angélica Celaya), Constantine must stop the impending darkness that is set to befall upon the Earth.
This weeks midseason finale "The Saint of Last Resorts", John comes face to face with his biggest test yet, an ex girlfriend named Anne Marie with ties to his Newcastle days. Ann Marie has become a nun in an attempt to make amends for her part in the loss of Astra, but her supernatural has crept back into her life when young mothers are killed and their children abducted. John and Chas travel Mexico to aid Ann Marie in the abduction case, but upon arrival, learn that a second baby has been abducted and the demon may actually be one of Eve's sisters (yes, that Eve...from Adam and Eve lore), who chose power and eternal damnation in Hell rather than marrying Adam. John quickly realizes that one of the nuns is his suspected demon and confronts her. When Constantine's theory is confirmed, he begins to establish a plan to vanquish the demon and save the missing babies.
Meanwhile, back at Constantine central, Zed is discovering that the house may have more to it than meets the eye. After some exploration time, the young psychic heads out to get more art supplies and runs into Eddie, the nude model she was drawing from last weeks episode. She quickly realizes that not all is what it appears with this young love interest and she decides to find out the truth. After it is revealed that the young man is actually working for Zed's father to return her to him, Zed becomes surrounded by two others who were sent to collect her and she is abducted. John and Ann Marie lure Eve's sister out and successfully interrogate her to find out the truth as to why she is on Earth. John finds out that she is working for an ancient order of warlocks, the invunche, and that the darkness is closer than he thinks. As we close, Ann Marie shoots John leaving him for dead, as one of the invunche approaches.
What an extremely entertaining start to the season! The first eight episodes were jam packed with interesting characters and cleverly written storylines that allowed for hardcore Hellblazer fans and novices alike to enjoy the show equally. Matt Ryan is superb in his portrayal of the titular character and the supporting cast of Charles Halford, Angélica Celaya and Harold Perrineau has been nothing short of spectacular in their portrayals of these characters. The choice for NBC to only order a 13 episode season has been seen as a death sentence for the shows chances for a second season, but I disagree. I think the less is more approach for a new show like this might be a good thing! The limited run actually allows for fans to have a chance to digest the show in small quantities and not be overwhelmed by a full order season where it may tire out its newer fans.
The goal for NBC is to find the proper time slot to maximize its viewing capabilities. A prime time slot is out of the question due to the subject matter and content, but Friday night at 10PM EST may not be the solution. I know, for me, being home to watch the show at its normal spot is difficult and more times than not I am viewing it through DVR the next morning. NBC relies on ratings to assess their shows, but Constantine has been handicapped from the beginning. It's time for NBC to trust in its shows strengths and push through to allow a clever and interesting show like Constantine to find its success.

This is a fun show that fans of the genre are likely to enjoy. The show is best when it's scary. The problem, is that episodes seem to have gravitated towards a "dark" level that is too close to "Supernatural"... in order to stand out from the crowd, I think this show should go darker and scarier.

The humour and the tone of this show are spot on. I'm writing this as a fan of the comic, in that it is a reasonable faithful interpretation of the spirit of it (could be darker ;) ) and also as a fan of TV. The visual effects are decent for TV, the atmosphere provides a scare or two, and if NBC goes all the way and takes this show in a similar direction to Hannibal (unapologetically violent and disturbing), they got another hit on their hands.
Overall, I'd suggest anyone interested in comic books to give Constantine a shot. In a time when most shows based on comics are either corny (The Flash, Agents of SHIELD) or gratuitous fanboy pandering (Gotham), Constantine feels like a breath of fresh air.

"Constantine" was canceled some time ago by NBC but is still being shopped around. I hope it finds a new home. With some tweaking it has the potential to be a good show.

"Constantine" is the TV adaptation of the DC comic anti hero John Constantine. He's a chain smoking (although less so on TV) bristly character who is cursed to grapple with the forces of evil due to his past misdeeds.

"Constantine" is the TV adaptation of the DC comic anti hero John Constantine. He's a chain smoking (although less so on TV) bristly character who is cursed to grapple with the forces of evil due to his past misdeeds. John describes himself as a "demonologist, exorcist and master of the dark arts".

In episode 1 we think Liz will end up his partner but she gets the boot. Instead Zed (who is a psychic) arrives to help with the weekly demon quests. Chas is also along for the ride. Manny the Angel drops in from time to time to offer advise (or just to heckle John). Papa Midnite also arrives later in the season and he's really cool

I enjoyed a number of the stories. My favorites were the Hunger Demon and Coblynau. Constantine also has a cool house (with endless doors you're not supposed to open) and lots of relics with supernatural powers (including Aleister Crowley's shaving brush and Achille's heel, well specifically the sinew from his heel). This reminds me of "Warehouse 13" but it's still fun to watch.

My criticisms of the show is that a few of the stories were so so. Also the actress who plays Zed accent kept slipping which was unnerving. I do think John and Zed have chemistry so that's good. We just need more meat to their story lines and some good demons to chase.

In conclusion, is "Constantine" must see TV. Not really but with some adjustments I would be back for a second look for sure.

It's just one of the shows that you expect some drama but you got another sunday dinner tv show.

Even i like guy acting constantine then whole surrounding it's just bad. I remember reading hellblazer and this tv show it's othing close to it. No smoking constantine hurts a bit because i was expecting to see somthing of a kind "Harry Angel". Plot and surrounding as well as other actors

Plot and surrounding as well as other actors on a show makes me feel like someone is applying **** mentalist formula again. Actors picked up from newspapers and tapeworm plot.

What i would like to see is actors that do act, plot made for several episodes and smoking constantine.

ah forgot to add since they make 1ep 1story things it kind a makes you think they don't feel secure about their show...

keep a main actor, everything else to dumpster

Wooden acting, horrendous lead. Completely trash and ripping off many elements of other tv shows. Absolute rubbish. Do not watch this. I would rather be sent to jail for life than watch Constantine.

By no means is this show complex, but it is satisfying to watch. It really started to gain momentum towards the end of the first season. Its a nice light show to just zone out to.

Didn't watch it until it became available on Hulu and I am glad I gave it a shot. Well acted, Interesting story, and definite manages to capture the character of Constantine. It's a bit slow at times though and definitely could have been written better. That being said though, I hope it gets picked up by another network. There's just too much potential with the show and I'd hate to see it wasted.

This show is performing a balancing act, trying to be a comic book show about the dark and supernatural but also trying to be a typical NBC procedural. This is its greatest failing. For this, the show does not allow itself to focus on its strengths--the story of the supernatural darkness, and Constantine as a character--and instead is bogged down by its needs to include sexual tension without chemistry, be what I would call "just dim enough to call dark," and remain simple enough to remain overly-episodic.

There is great potential in this show--and the rumors that it will move to SyFy as "Hellblazer" really keeps my hopes up. However, until this show is treated as it should be, watch cautiously. Right now, it is clear NBC is afraid to let this series become what fans hope of it.

I love this show, it may not be that close to the comic series that inspired it, yet I am still looking forward to every episode. It has yet to fail to amuse me.

“Constantine” is an excellent show that thrills in most episodes. It is well-acted and atmospheric, although the season arc does not pay off and a few episodes and villains feel frustrating.

The show is amazing, while it's not perfect, I feel there are very few that are. Matt Ryan is a great actor in this one. The best comic adaptation for a tv show ever made. It is much like supernatural, but serious, and with deeper characters. The only down side is the timing, friday night is really bad...

What a fantastic show with its mix of horror and dark comedy. I cannot understand why the American ratings are so low I pray they renew for a second season

Its awesome, but don't know why Metacritic gave very low score. I loved the way he fights daemons and his style of talking. NBC or any other network should continue the second season, waiting for it.

Constantine is a solid show whose biggest strength is its protagonist. Matt Ryan is fantastic as antihero John Constantine. The tone fits the character very well. Unfortunately it suffer due to being formulaic and very monster-of-the-week. It also sets up many threads that never come to fruition. This is partly due to the early cancellation, but it can't be ignored.

I hadn't watched many American shows a year ago, nor was I very well versed in superhero stuff other than the Spider-Man trilogy and having basic knowledge of popular superhero stories (Batman's parents were killed, Superman is from Krypton, Joker is Batman's villain; basic stuff like that). So after having watched MCU, DCEU and some more superhero movies, I was very interested in the genre. My friend recommended me to watch the Arrowverse. I watched The Flash and Arrow, and I really liked them. However, they started getting a little repetitive after some time.
So once when I got a Prime subscription I found this show. I didn't know back then this is a part of Arrowverse. So when I saw it I was taken aback. This show has so much horror stuff without actually scaring. Because of this it felt more like a superhero show than a cheesy horror show like Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Matt Ryan, I read in the X-Ray feature, was the same guy who voiced Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. This got me even more interested.
The show taught me a lot about Constantine, something the movie wasn't able to. I understood the lore, character and idea behind the hero. He and Chas are the perfect duo, and I think they should be as iconic as Sherlock Holmes and Watson. The only problem I had with the show was it got too predictable after some time. Also there was too much talking, but that doesn't bother me considering my mom also watched it with me and she didn't like the scary parts.
Constantine is probably one of the only shows from Arrowverse made in the previous decade that was actually good the whole time. Of course this isn't a big deal since it only lasted for one season, but it was able to capture the essence of the character better than most adaptations. If it had lasted longer it could have been the most popular show of the cinematic universe.

Constantine seems like a good fit tonally for Friday night companion series “Grimm,” but Constantine will need to more clearly establish its world--and the rules of its world--and better define its characters if it hopes to become a fanboy favorite.

There's the structure for a sturdy but unremarkable supernatural procedural (and companion piece to "Grimm"), but in the pilot, at least, producers David Goyer and Daniel Cerone aren't aiming for much more.
