Catastrophe is here and gone in six episodes, but it leaves you spent, satisfied and pleasantly skeeved out, the way the best modern comedy shows do.

Catastrophe is a comedy, first and foremost, but it masterfully proves that you don't have to sacrifice depth for laughs.

To write out episode-themes like this makes Catastrophe sound potentially dreary about marriage equality and parental strain. Trust me, it’s the exact opposite: so exhilarating, so gaspingly funny, you’ll burn through the episodes as fast as you can.

Your leader in the clubhouse for comedies in 2016 is Catastrophe on Amazon. ... There is much to love here. There is arguably more to love than last season, which seems almost inconceivable.

The second season of Catastrophe has only one major flaw: It’s too short. ... The easy rapport between the two leads is, if anything, even more smooth and enjoyable this year, and their frisky dialogue, always full of delightful left turns and segues, manages to incorporate anger, frustration and affection in equal quantities.

Again and again, the show toggles between shock humor and sentiment like the two are the most natural fit in the world. Tonally, the show's a miracle, on top of just being balls-out funny.

Catastrophe offers much to laugh at; it is perhaps one of the most cleverly and subtly written sitcoms currently on offer.

That’s [fleshing out the supporting players and introduce new wrinkles into the main relationship] more or less what Catastrophe does this time out, with varying degrees of success, but always with enough wit and energy that you’ll want to keep watching even if what’s onscreen is not as blazingly fresh as what you saw last time.

A thoroughly enjoyable comedy that brings vigor and charm to a familiar TV trope.

Catastrophe has the raw honesty of a mom on her second martini at a play date. It’s also--time-strapped parents take note--a refreshingly brisk six episodes. Even at that, some subplots feel extraneous, and like the first season, the second ends on a dissonant cliffhanger.

Their coupling is toxically but entertainingly fueled by this sense that every story the couple can tell must be a melodrama.

Whenever they lash out in exhaustion and frustration, which is often the moment invariably leads to shocked laughter, a humor laced with desperation and need. Somehow, they're still into each other, and the only true calamity of Catastrophe is its brevity. [4-17 Apr 2016, p.21]

It was often laugh-out-loud funny as Ms. Horgan’s quips found equal footing with Mr. Delaney’s quick-witted retorts. Season two continues in the same tone but somewhat less successfully now that the pair are enmeshed in domestic woes.

At this point it competes for humorous situations with "Odd Mom Out" and the latter wins hands down. Sharon, already not at all attractive, becomes even **** neurotic and that just doesn't work for me. Let's see what season 3 brings... Full Review »
