Bad news: Brooklyn Nine-Nine is still a cop show. The good news is, though, whatever a single half-hour broadcast comedy could possibly do to chip away at America’s hero-cop mythology, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is, in this final season, committed to at least trying. ... None of the five episodes provided for review contain any reasons for fans to turn it off, I'm happy to report. Indeed, the show incorporates our changed view of policing into a season-long arc involving McGinley while still finding time for farcical misadventures. ... Some of the season’s episodes largely ignore the cultural context altogether. Each is compelling on its own, but there’s no overall sense of direction. ... I was slightly dubious about how effective the show would be in making this pivot. In the end, though, it works pretty well. ... At the same time, there’s still a good deal of cognitive dissonance inherent to Brooklyn Nine-Nine. ... I’m happy that a sitcom that’s delivered so many hard laughs over the years has had the chance to go out on its own terms—nudging its audience toward a greater awareness of what other cop shows are trying to sell in the process. It’s admittedly a bit much to ask Mike Schur and a bunch of comedians to try to dismantle the entire policing system brick by brick, especially over a single season of television. But the dissonance is still there, and not even our boys and girls in blue can ignore it any longer. They’re being thoughtful about it, but the jury’s still out as to whether that’s enough, or just (forgive me) a cop-out. Read full review

A great start for this final season, true to the Brooklyn99 spirit. The plot is consistent too, the rewriting is there true but not the main focus of the story. Hope to see a great finale for this amazing show.

Preachy, heavy-handed, in your face and down your throat lecturing. 99 was already on thin-ice because of similar episodes in the past that cast aside any comedic-facade and instead decide to flat out tell the audience if they don't think a certain way they are the problem.

In the earlyPreachy, heavy-handed, in your face and down your throat lecturing. 99 was already on thin-ice because of similar episodes in the past that cast aside any comedic-facade and instead decide to flat out tell the audience if they don't think a certain way they are the problem.

In the early seasons the show cleverly wove comedy and social commentary together in a seam-less blend that encouraged the viewer to think about social issues from perhaps a different perspective. In an about face, season 8 starts off with dismissing the entire police system and blaming it as corrupt and the reason for any injustice happening anywhere on the planet.

Being chastised by a television show that frames the problems of society in a bizarre one-sided view that dismisses any faults of the parties engaging with the police is incredibly off-putting. The show's entire cast and production staff should be embarrassed they resorted to a narrow, politicized and biased approach to addressing policing issues America.

Worst of all, season eight of 99 commits the most egregious act a show that professes to be a comedy can commit: it's not funny.… Expand

shattered. It's really hard to be funny for 8 seasons, but up until this season B99 was doing well. So far, the season is very weird and now your favourite TV show is filled this politics, as if we hadnt had enough of it. Really unfortunate way to bow out.

Probably the worst season of TV I've ever watched. It used to be a funny show that dealt with difficult issues with policing/society in a tasteful way that allowed people to view things from another perspective. This season does not do that.
