I loved the first episode and found many things to mull over and enjoy in the next two, and I liked how they play as an extension of where we left off in the third season. ... It’s still not a world in which they’re comfortable or consistently welcomed. That pervasive unease, equal parts hilarious and nightmarish, may be Atlanta‘s ultimate commentary on storytelling and on contemporary America. I intend to relish this closing run of eight episodes, whatever they happen to be.

It synthesizes love, violence, and confusion into an expert investigation of what motivates the pursuits of Black people. ... Yet among the expected amount of absurdist comedy, there are true moments of emotional impact regarding stigmatized aspects of Black life. ... It’s masterful at taking tangible, conspicuous culture and emboldening the value of it; such hyper-visibility and crafting of the real into the surreal-but-undeniable is what’s cementing the legacy of the series.

If these first three episodes are any indication of where Atlanta is heading in its final episodes, it’s a truly compelling direction.
-
Sometimes flirting with horror, and drama, dedicating several episodes to unknown characters who are to never to be seen again — Atlanta has pushed the boundaries on what a TV show can accomplish, and will be remembered for that accordingly.
-
Atlanta has consistently provided some of the toughest and most refreshing satire on the entertainment world as a whole.
-
Season 4 has positioned itself to maintain that sense of possibility while steadying its swing along a particular path. What’s next is anyone’s guess, but you better believe “Atlanta” will put on a show.
-
In Season 4’s first three episodes at least, Atlanta has found its footing again.
-
Unlike Season 3, there are fewer (if any) memorable moments from the start of Season 4. It mostly runs off vibes, filled with ennui, as its characters exist adrift in their own lives.
-
The final season of Atlanta has a sense of the surreal that makes the delivery of its message a whole lot easier to take than the show’s third season, which felt like more of a take-your-medicine exercise at times.
-
Through the first three episodes provided for review, the cohesiveness that once catapulted this series to prominence, however, barely exists. All that’s left are the shards of what once was.
