I loved the first episode and found many things to mull over and enjoy in the next two, and I liked how they play as an extension of where we left off in the third season. ... It’s still not a world in which they’re comfortable or consistently welcomed. That pervasive unease, equal parts hilarious and nightmarish, may be Atlanta‘s ultimate commentary on storytelling and on contemporary America. I intend to relish this closing run of eight episodes, whatever they happen to be.

It synthesizes love, violence, and confusion into an expert investigation of what motivates the pursuits of Black people. ... Yet among the expected amount of absurdist comedy, there are true moments of emotional impact regarding stigmatized aspects of Black life. ... It’s masterful at taking tangible, conspicuous culture and emboldening the value of it; such hyper-visibility and crafting of the real into the surreal-but-undeniable is what’s cementing the legacy of the series.

If these first three episodes are any indication of where Atlanta is heading in its final episodes, it’s a truly compelling direction.

Sometimes flirting with horror, and drama, dedicating several episodes to unknown characters who are to never to be seen again — Atlanta has pushed the boundaries on what a TV show can accomplish, and will be remembered for that accordingly.

Season 4 has positioned itself to maintain that sense of possibility while steadying its swing along a particular path. What’s next is anyone’s guess, but you better believe “Atlanta” will put on a show.

Unlike Season 3, there are fewer (if any) memorable moments from the start of Season 4. It mostly runs off vibes, filled with ennui, as its characters exist adrift in their own lives.

The final season of Atlanta has a sense of the surreal that makes the delivery of its message a whole lot easier to take than the show’s third season, which felt like more of a take-your-medicine exercise at times.

Through the first three episodes provided for review, the cohesiveness that once catapulted this series to prominence, however, barely exists. All that’s left are the shards of what once was.

Returning without the goodwill that had reinforced the reception of the preceeding third season, Atlanta's fourth season continues to stumble.Returning without the goodwill that had reinforced the reception of the preceeding third season, Atlanta's fourth season continues to stumble. Gone is the cinematic paranoia and bizzare black existentialism . These episodes have shown a continuation of the disjointed unfocused storytelling that focuses on the message of it's stories rather than telling them well. Obviously given it's "Atlanta " the cinematography is pristine alongside the fantastic soundtrack but when none of that offers more to the story all you can really be is disappointed by a warped could have been masterpiece Full Review »

It's in the tier of Twin Peaks and Damon Lindelof's stuff in terms of just being so unique and surreal. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending but I mean with shows like this I feel like that's kinda the point. I never went in expecting a neatly tied-up narrative so I guess it is par for the course.

I slightly wish there had been more standalones this season (like last season was too much, but this seasons was too little). Nonetheless it remains at the high standard I've come to expect from Atlanta.

Very intrigued by what Hiro Murai, Donald & Stephen Glover do next - with this I feel they've demonstrated they're more than just a flash in the pan.
