I feel stupider for having watched this series. Every single thing the characters do is ridiculous and contrary to common sense. Additionally, the technical writing is awful. This series is well beyond "suspend disbelief"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh holy zoom! It's like the crew and writer's didn't know how to make anything look or sound dramatic other than background music that drowns out everything and bad shakey camera zooms. You don't need to look up the actor's nose to understand that the situation they are in is dire. We get it, the ship is crashing and tensions are high. All of the characters are one dimensional and have no depth. You can't make relationships with any of them. The visuals are interesting but that's probably the only good thing about this series. I'm sure everyone who worked on this show is very talented but something missed the mark. They have the nerd, the useless pretty boy, the fat guy, the sexy hot head, the by the book captain, and the egotistical villain who dies in the first episode. Oh, and the AI with emotions who is trying to understand what humans do. The best part of this show are the scenes back on earth. It seems that's the only time where the writers took care to make actual connections between characters. If they get a season 2 I hope they do it differently. Expand

Everyone seems to act randomly without thought or intent. The ship AI is irrational. It doesn't understand why a person that defends their life might result in one of the two people dying ???? "I don't understand how you could take a life so easily?" REALLY ????
The "astronauts" take risks for no particular reason seemingly on a whim. And random acts affect these people to an extravagant degree. Like if they crossed a street it would be perfectly normal for these people to suddenly break down crying in the middle of crossing a highway, get hit by a meteor, get sucked into a wormhole, and get abducted by aliens (all in the first two steps). The alien ship that lands on earth is investigated by a single scientist, doesn't even matter where he is from or who he is, this is just ridiculous in the extreme. I kind of feel bad for the actors in this. This will haunt their careers.

No, he invites the neighborhood equivalent of the Three Stooges--- and off they go on their bumbling fumbling way.
So here--- it's the most important space mission ever, but do they crew it with disciplined, focused, sharp space veterans? Of course not-- rather it appears to be a crew of peevish, unfocused, whiny losers --- I think they're supposed to represent Gen Z or Millennials and their "bad attitudes" or some such rubbish. OMG--- pretty much not a single one of these people should ever be doing anything except selling hamburgers at McDonald's. Did anyone ever hear the phrase "psych eval"?
Another feature of certain really bad Hollywood productions these days is that the writers seem to think that writing characters with "interesting" personalities comes down to obnoxious or annoying. Pretty much every character on this show falls into one, if not both, of those "personalities". Even the folks back on Earth, the captain's husband and child and the female general, just make my skin crawl. The kid especially--- I can just see her stage mother behind the scenes grooming and pushing her to be some sort of child star. EEECH!
I think if I were trapped in an elevator with most of these people for more than 10 minutes I be strangling them.
P.S. The musical choices in this piece of drek are beyond incomprehensible. The music seems to be chosen by a not-very-bright 11 year old teenybopper who seems to think this is a very bad Spanish soap opera (which it sort of is)-- but of course not-very-bright 11 year old teenyboppers should not be let anywhere near sci-fi. P.P.S. SPOILER ALERT: So as this juggernaut of nonsense progresses, we start having multiple AIs who are all as peevish, petulant and annoying as the human crew. Great--- when you've got a winning formula, double down.
P.P.P.S. I've come to realize I don't think I like a single character in this entire series, including the AIs. Tough to build a series when you don't have even one character who you actually would want to spend an elevator ride with (to repeat myself). (Well, the black security guy who comes up in Season 2 maybe, also just maybe the computer hacker who comes up in Season 2-- as long as he gets a better haircut and showers frequently.)

I still think the show is building towards something, but I’m not even sure the writers knew what it was. What could have been an Interesting plot unfortunately let down by bad characters and writing. Best described as Friday night CW fodder. Also, let’s all agree that walking around on an alien planet without a space suit is generally a bad idea. And on asteroids. And eating space berries. And sniffing space flowers. And drinking space water. And basically touching anything in space barehanded. And not using the buddy system. And not checking for space spider hitchhikers. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Captain Karen and the Diversity Squad is some of the worst television available. I watched the entire series and laughed the whole way through. It is forced, trite, and apparently written by angsty, emo teenagers. The (over)acting is some of the worst I’ve seen from adults. There is a lot of “science” jargon thrown around to confuse the uninformed, but none of the characters know the first thing about physics, programming, biology, or medicine. To make matters worse they pull the ending straight out of Independence Day because why not; you too can upload a fatal virus into an alien invasion force!

If you want your twitter politics with a thin coating of space CGI, this is your show. If not it’s an easy pass.

I barely finished the first season and did not have the patience to watch the second after the awful writing. Hopefully the writers will do the world a favor and not write anything else.

Its bad bad bad in almost every aspect.
- The actors are almost all completely incompetent to an extend that I think that they didnt choose them by talent, but because they were friends with someone doing the show. To be honest, it looks like they picked some untalented Youtubers.

- The script, the dialogue and the characters are completely childish and stupid. The story makes weird jumps all the time, things dont make sense, understanding even the simplest physics seem to be completely out of the writers capability. And not only physics, but also human interaction, social behavior, humor, coherency of stories, logic in dialogues and other simple things. For example they think anyone would put together a crew like that, where everyone hates each other, acts like they didnt even pass elementary school, are far too young to be going on this mission, not mentally or physically fit for such a mission or somehow got a doctor in medicine without even knowing basic things about it, and while looking like they are 17 years old.

- The virtue signalling and SJW political correctness propaganda is completely over the top in this.
The doctor is a transgender and of course theres a lover too. 50% of the crew are of course colored. Most are women and most of them are of course leaders, very strong or smart, while the males almost all are stupid, dorky, weak or incompetent, incl. the male AI! The only semi-competent male is killed early and of course depicted as a toxic "alpha male" who is wrong on everything anyway and ready to kill others that question his authority.

Very good depiction of the SJW culture in terms of conflicts, though. They are always fighting with each other, question every order, want unique treatment and generally act like they are spoiled children who dont know even basics in social interaction. Even the AI is so full of uncontrolled emotions that he almost kills everyone. Just like in real life.
The irony is, that they dont have a real black person in the series in a leading or supporting role. Nor Asian. They are all brown. And the only Asians in the show are both killed (one of them literally only was alive 1 minute). Nor do they have gay people in the show, if your dont count the transgender and the one attracted to [insert preferred pronoun here - which the show doesnt do btw, they avoid it like the plague].

I still somehow watched the whole season. Why? Because the story is somewhat interesting.
Same reason I still watch Walking Dead, although I am about to quit.
Will I watch the next season? Maybe. If I remember to. And I doubt I will.

I am giving this show a two, and that is merely because the idea of the show is not terrible. However, the execution is GOD AWFUL. Is it just me, or does anyone else HATE that kid? The acting is just so garbage and the mother daughter connection is so atrociously fake that I just want to commit war crimes every time I hear the kid say “mommy.” There is little to no character development in the series, which doesn’t help matters. Back to the kid though, which is the main reason for my bad review: I just want to squash that thing like it’s the ice age baby or baby yoda. It is disgusting how poor the acting is in scenes with the kid and it ruined the show for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What’s better than coming up with a great plot and creative writing? Well, basically taking elements of every recent aliens vs humans show/movies out there. Alien “artifact” lands on Earth with no idea why, check. Send ship to meet or kill the aliens on their home world, check. Main protagonist has guilt issues from a past horrible incident, check. Sleep pod problems, check. Mutiny on the ship, check. Damaged ship, check. Infected by alien parasites (different aliens), check. Alien saboteur, check. Malfunctioning AI, check. I could go on, but what’s the point. Really, the only original part of this show was the absurd crew, which was made of primarily 20 something non-military government employees. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanna start by the good things about this show, which won’t be long sadly. + they respected the rule "If you cannot explain it scientifically, don’t try", so AI, FTL (Which seems to be based on Alcubierre’s theories), artificial gravity etc. is not explained, and drifts away from hard science (but it’s okay, why not)
+ the acting is really great, seems like the actors did the most they could with what they had, doesn’t make the show great but A for effort I guess (especially William)
+ good CGI (not fantastic but not bad)

So for the bad stuff

- It was written and directed like trash : NASA or whatever doesn’t picks up an object the size of a football field, its apparently easier to find life in space than 1$ on the ground etc. - The person in charge of vetting everyone for the mission should get his ass fired, any psychological evaluation would have grounded Yerxa
- Why the hell does everyone has to have sex ? That’s cheap imho. 2 people had no sex scene (Petra and Cas). I mean, yeah of course it’s enjoyable to have love plots but Jesus it seems they’ve done that just to add more minutes or whatever. - the Aliens (those who landed on earth) kill for fun, they have no other goal than destruction, so that’s completely stupid in the first place but okay. Then why the hell do you bother landing a cristal thing where you could blow the whole planet easily (yes they can), they don’t appear to want to colonize, so why bother ?
- too many side plots made me almost forget why they were here. I could go on, and that’s just my opinion ofc, but this show doesn’t deserve your time. Cheers,

This series is awful, there is no doubt about that. I could write an entire book as to why this series should be struck from television, but I would just be repeating what everyone else has said, so I am going to be specific:

Do any of the whiny children on this ship have jobs?? There is the sullen captain, the idiotic first mate, the panicky engineer, a confused civilian liaison, and the handsome computer hologram that does everything else. Every other person on this ship lounges around in their pajamas and rolls their eyes whenever work is mentioned. There is the overweight guy with a beard, a mean girl with an iPad, and other characters that blend together. None of them actually do anything. Their dialogue isn't even witty or fun. I mean, halfway through the first episode I was hoping the ship would blow up and the ACTUAL ship the show would be following with a likeable crew would show up. What a waste of money. Try again, Netflix.

This is science fiction made for dumb people. This is for people who like space, but know nothing about it. This show is made for people who don't know how people interact with other people.
The amount of potholes and just dumb writing is amazing. The first episode alone tells you everything you need to know. Them being afraid of hitting a planet shows they don't understand how big space is (they being the writers). Not using the backup crew after the current one beat you up in a mutiny? Really?

How about the episode where everyone is infected so they decide to space themselves, yet that one guy found a solution and rushes to them to tell them? Why is he rushing? Why do they act like they where just about to space themselves? HE IS INFECTED TOO! Why would they have spaced themselves without him? So he would have to do it himself? Why the rest do it together?
This show is written so badly it hurts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I specifically wanted to check this show out because I was told that there was good queer representation in it. That sounded interesting to me. I should have read some reviews first. I hope this one stops someone else from making my mistake. This show is a dumpster fire.

I'm going to presume that if you're here, you know the general premise of the show. (Alien artifact falls to earth. Mission sent to the probe's origin. Mission loses contact with earth before arriving.) The plot synopsis is: Everyone fights. All the time. For no reason. It's the laziest writing I have ever seen. All conflict is meaningless because conflict arises for no reason whatsoever. I'll make some bullet points below of things that made me angry.

- Teen melodrama.
- Mutiny within hours of mission start over minor disagreement.
- Mutineer accidentally killed post-mutiny in struggle while he tried to murder the captain. This is permanently treated by all characters (including the AI, who saw it happen) as premeditated murder by the captain. The captain does not contradict this.
- Crew members CONSTANTLY interact with foreign material/remove their helmets outside, despite both explicitly being told not to and dire consequences that keep happening.
- Teen melodrama.
- Spoiler: The title is never really explained or explored. I guess going on a mission is "Another Life?" It is hard to care, but this bugged me.
- No one can or wants to do their job. The crew of the most advanced ship ever made is lazy, and complain when they have to do literally anything.
- Orders are optional and there are zero consequences for directly disobeying them.
- Zero security surrounding a supposedly top secret project. To the point where the main researcher can just openly interact with and spill secrets to a celebrity blogger that he hangs out with publicly
- DID I MENTION TEEN MELODRAMA
- Every character without exception hates every other character. Literally no exceptions. All character interaction is based on needless conflict.
- All conflict is lazily manufactured. Nearly all conflict begins with one character insulting another, and the audience is left wondering *why*.
- The entire crew shows an absolute disinterest in their mission, in science, and their own well-being. All they care about is having sex with each other and fighting with each other. They have literally no other motivations or goals, despite periodic whining that they are all doomed.
- Characters are killed and replaced a lot. This can add tension in a series... but each time a character is killed, I am relieved. Because I hated them. But don't relax. They'll be replaced with a character you'll hate even more.

This show was written for no one. I cannot believe that Katee Sackhoff's time and the show's significant budget were wasted on this trash. Her acting is as good as it possibly could be, but the writing is something that actors can only do so much with. Nothing makes sense, and the show demands that you care about characters who are fundamentally unlikable. Avoid at all costs.

I'll focus just on the crew of the ship:
This must be the most incompetent crew I have ever seen in any movie, serving on any kind of a vessel (whether in space or not)!
This whole mess of a people, without any real chain of command, looks more like a group of unruly teenagers on a trip no one wanted to go to in the first place, supervised by adults escaped from psychiatric hospital.

*Captain/Commander Niko is a moralistic zealot, struggling to control her emotions, and suffering from post-traumatic disorder, affecting her judgement.
*Second in command is a sinister, over-ambitious man who hates Niko and openly questions her every decision from the very beginning.
*Third in command is a former criminal,... with a flexible loyalty.
*Then there is a 'government official', randomly backstabbing and threatening people, and 15 min later being completely cool and ok.

Almost everyone else has some degree of mental disorders, or behavioral traits that would simply prohibit them from ever being sent to space or serve in a crew: *First half of the crew are emotional freaks, that would have serious trouble getting a job at all, let alone responsible one, and in space.
*The other half behaves like they're here by an accident, and either don't understand what is their job there, panicking at every turn, or just outright don't care at all.
*And all this is guided by a flawed, melancholic AI with emotions.

-> What could possibly go wrong???

Interesting plot, great actors, what could possibly go wrong? Everything. Everything went very wrong. Something lands on Earth, nobody knows what the hell it is or what it wants or where it came from. So the government sends its “best” most elite people up in space to go... somewhere... to find out what this thing wants and if it wants to destroy the world. And this crew plans to save the world somehow. But where are they going? How do they know where to go? You’d think it would be explained, but it’s not. So we have this elite crew up in space who are just such poorly written characters it really grinds my gears. The captain (Katee Sackhoff), is constantly saving the crew from certain random deaths, while the rest of the crew repay her by constantly undermining her decisions and having sex all over the ship. The crew are comprised of over-saturated millennial characters: shallow, dramatic, entitled, and not at all believable people. The ONLY well written character is Captain Niko, but the problem is nobody else makes sense around her. The drama between crew members is trite and plain annoying. This series tries way too hard to hit all the marks: transgender, gay, lesbian, threesome, that perhaps if they spent more time on character development and less on character types, we’d have something half-digestible. They traverse between story lines a bit. Some make no sense and have no purpose. The plot line is completely ignored at times and we are thrown into some bogus side-story. I just couldn’t get over these garbage characters, mainly on the ship. I won’t even get into the people on the ground because there’s just not enough time. Sackhoff is the only saving grace in this entire dumpster fire of a show. Expand

Truly terrible.

Certain crowd picked cast based on "messaging" and didnt concentrate enough on plot, story, characters, etc...

Was good for about 15mins as they setup the story and then fail miserreably right after.

Performances by leads is often cringe inducing and dry; with dramatic over acting complete with "ominous music". In case it didnt feel "soap opera" enuff.

Like Niko did in show; run to the other side of universe.

[x] Constant emotional outbursts and forced drama every 2 minutes
[x] Forced diversity hires rather than selecting people based on acting ability
[x] Far too much cussing, **** this **** that, **** you, mother****ing **** "(every 30 seconds)
[x] Spend more time arguing and running a daycare rather than establishing plot
[x] Incomprehensible decision making that requires suspension of disbelief and ignorance of any science
[x] No command structure, no uniforms, pressed hair out of stasis, ear rings and makeup, skimpy outfits

This series is a waste of time, seriously it will piss you off beyond belief if you are an avid sci-fi fan, because they get nothing right, nothing makes any sense and you can tell nothing was written by anyone with any experience in sci-fi. You'll instantly hate the entire crew who would be more suitable on an MTV reality show or maybe Jersey Girls. Only the captain and hologram are tolerable but even then, they are busy babysitting the rest of the crew. Just like all the other reviewers here have stated, you'll spend more time skipping scenes (like all the flashbacks to life on earth scenes which are far too frequent) but jokes on you, there are no good scenes, when the ship is in danger you actually WANT the crew to die off, it's really that bad. Avoid this show like the plague!!

As the show continues we learn more about why Niko is tormented by the mission she previously commanded. We learn more about the AI hologram that is the interface with the ship. I love Niko's character and, especially, her interaction with Cass and William. It captures a certain dirtiness and grittiness of ships and space travel, dealing with some of the challenges of keeping a crew alive and healthy. The relationships between a crew trapped on a sometimes smelly ship, with severed communication to Earth, is sometimes a little bonkers but always entertaining. Looking forward to Season 2! Expand

It's a mix of great and awful. I would not recommend it to alt-right children as they may be offended by characters that are not cishet euro-christians. On to the adult issues...

The acting is a mixed bag of, "How did she deliver that line with feeling and a straight face?" to "That is absolute felgercarb" and the writing matches it. I really feel as if some more plot line control would really benefit it in a second season. By the end of the first season far too many plots had been opened without being addressed, almost on the level of a Robert Jordan book. The human interaction as acted and written often feels forced, almost as if they had a bunch of devout myth followers write a pornoflick. Not a single one of the characters is notable or worthy as a fully developed human. The sets, CGI and all the other details almost seem to be from a different production as they are far better than the writing and acting. I remember an era with good writing and bad effects and this is almost the opposite, poor writing and amazing effects!

The tech is unbalanced, as an example lightspeed comms with better than fiber bandwidth are more fantasy than sci-fi. I suspect that is because the show is as much a soap opera as science-fiction.

One great thing about the Alien movies were the believable depiction of every day workers life on spaceship. Needless to say there is nothing like this in this series. And while some movies go a bit to make sure the audience understands the day to day struggle of a crew on such a spaceship, Another life just has a teenage highschool soap opera on board with the maximum amount of thing your should not take on a long yourney in space.. like sassy crew members or **** crew members or disobeying crew members (all the effing time) or crew members that are on a daily mandatory medicamentation. Or crew members that out on a remarkable amount of make up every day for not apparent reason..without uniforms and without any real skill that would make them fit for being on such an important mission.. all in all. if you are here for "representation" and teen drama, this is your series.. if you are remotely interested in a coherent plot and a progression, move along .. this is not the series you are looking for.. This is basically a scripted, overdramatic "Big Brother" in space..

Visual fx are good but most of the time we only see internals and corridors.
Weird narravie of the story: In the first 2 or 3 episodes there is a main plot that progress during the show...but laters the show seems more "single episodes" oriented where protagonists are facing a event unrelated to the main plot like Finding food, ship malfuncion, planet exploration.
Most of the plot of this "singular episodes" are inspired from classic sci -fy show from Star treck to Doctor Hwo...so if you have ever watched one of those shows (even casually) this Another Life will appear derivated and predictable.
We will see Season 2 because there is margin of improvement.

Now and then,It is a very odd show, but it is not boring. It never really seems to come together in the way that it probably should - instead seeming to take the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach to storytelling. Now and then, something interesting happens, but then, something else happens and the show goes "Squirel!!!" and runs off in some other, random direction.

So again, the constant jumping around keeps the show from getting to be dull (the series seems to be incapable of sticking to a single idea for more than 15 minutes or so) but the constant skipping around (in time, and in terms of plot) also prevents the audience from really getting into the experience. As a ride, it kind of works, but as a genuinely affecting series, with legitimately affecting characters, it largely fails, simply by virtue of not ever spending enough time on any single idea to really sell it.

That having been said, I was never bored - but apart from having a mild sense of curiosity about what random bit of otherwise unconnected lunacy is lurking around the next corner, I was also never really engaged. It is an interesting diversion, and you can have some fun by spotting the constant references (homages, or theft, if you prefer) to other (better) science-fiction properties, but overall, the series is generally forgettable.

A fun curiosity, but very little more.

Yes it's not great as the scores reflect. But for sci-fi fans there is still a lot to enjoy. Also there's lots to laugh if you don't take it all too seriously.

Many reviewers have criticized the characters of this show, a criticism I agree with. Many have compared the crew of the Salvare to the cast of Big Brother, which is a comparison I believe is very apt. The characters on this show are immature, inexperienced, overly emotional, unstable, and completely foolish. No organization would send this group on "the most important mission in history" by choice.

You could fix many of the issues with the characters on this show by simply changing how the show is set up. Make it so Katee Sackhoff is leading a group of underperforming cadets on a training mission when the artifact arrives, knocking out the other ships and leaving the Salvare as Earth's sole hope of making contact. This crew wasn't who you'd want on this mission, but it's the hand you were dealt. With this one change I could understand why a group of immature idiots is manning this mission and not grizzled veterans who have seen and done it all.

Is it good? Not sure. Did I just watched a whole season? Yes!! The script was corny, but it kept me watching and interested mostly. The graphics were a little lame, but think of it as an entertaining score-if tv show, not the next Star Wars.

Ich finde die Serie garnicht so schlecht. Sie erinnert mich an die Anfänge von Stargate und die Liebe ich. Bitte macht dort weiter und die Serie wird sich entwickeln.
