It's a mix of great and awful. I would not recommend it to alt-right children as they may be offended by characters that are not cishet euro-christians. On to the adult issues...

The acting is a mixed bag of, "How did she deliver that line with feeling and a straight face?" to "That is absolute felgercarb" and the writing matches it. I really feel as if some more plot line control would really benefit it in a second season. By the end of the first season far too many plots had been opened without being addressed, almost on the level of a Robert Jordan book. The human interaction as acted and written often feels forced, almost as if they had a bunch of devout myth followers write a pornoflick. Not a single one of the characters is notable or worthy as a fully developed human. The sets, CGI and all the other details almost seem to be from a different production as they are far better than the writing and acting. I remember an era with good writing and bad effects and this is almost the opposite, poor writing and amazing effects!

The tech is unbalanced, as an example lightspeed comms with better than fiber bandwidth are more fantasy than sci-fi. I suspect that is because the show is as much a soap opera as science-fiction.

Average.
Main charactres fail to inspire simpathy and look more like characters from beverly hills 90210 than a starship crew.
Visual fx are good but most of the time we only see internals and corridors.
Weird narravie of the story: In the first 2 or 3 episodes there is a main plot that progress during the show...but laters the show seems more "single episodes" oriented where protagonists are facing a event unrelated to the main plot like Finding food, ship malfuncion, planet exploration.
Most of the plot of this "singular episodes" are inspired from classic sci -fy show from Star treck to Doctor Hwo...so if you have ever watched one of those shows (even casually) this Another Life will appear derivated and predictable.
We will see Season 2 because there is margin of improvement.

It is a very odd show, but it is not boring. It never really seems to come together in the way that it probably should - instead seeming to take the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach to storytelling. Now and then,It is a very odd show, but it is not boring. It never really seems to come together in the way that it probably should - instead seeming to take the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" approach to storytelling. Now and then, something interesting happens, but then, something else happens and the show goes "Squirel!!!" and runs off in some other, random direction.

So again, the constant jumping around keeps the show from getting to be dull (the series seems to be incapable of sticking to a single idea for more than 15 minutes or so) but the constant skipping around (in time, and in terms of plot) also prevents the audience from really getting into the experience. As a ride, it kind of works, but as a genuinely affecting series, with legitimately affecting characters, it largely fails, simply by virtue of not ever spending enough time on any single idea to really sell it.

That having been said, I was never bored - but apart from having a mild sense of curiosity about what random bit of otherwise unconnected lunacy is lurking around the next corner, I was also never really engaged. It is an interesting diversion, and you can have some fun by spotting the constant references (homages, or theft, if you prefer) to other (better) science-fiction properties, but overall, the series is generally forgettable.

A fun curiosity, but very little more.

Yes it's not great as the scores reflect. But for sci-fi fans there is still a lot to enjoy. Also there's lots to laugh if you don't take it all too seriously.

I liked it. It’s a good sci-fi show in this genre form young adults. There are a few cliches but nothing unbearable.

That interspersed with the constant forays into surrealism and dream sequences gave this viewer the feeling of being jerked around. I saw far too much of the characters' romantic lives than I wanted to. People living with rationed water having sex in space in hot, clammy quarters. You can smell the funk coming off your TV set. The writers apparently couldn't resist ripping off Alien. The space creature sequences are just plain silly. I found myself skipping scenes. I'd be surprised if it was picked up for another season. I would rate it good for a young adult series but not suitable for people in their 40s+. However if you absolutely love sci-fi, can’t miss out on anything with Katee Sackhoff, and have the time to let this series be digested you should find it enjoyable. Expand
