It’s a big tapestry like “Yellowstone,” and Sheridan isn’t about to change his writing style for two big A-list stars. The show frankly seems to suffer when they’re not onscreen, but you still have to tip your 10-gallon brim to its creator for doing his own thing regardless.

The premiere achieves the rough emotional outlines of an epic – the feel of sweeping ambitions – without much specificity of feeling, yet. But there are more reasons than not, especially if you root for Ford and Mirren as elder statesmen of the screen, to watch more.

Remembering Sheridan’s penchant for juxtaposing mankind’s ugliest antics with magnificent natural vistas, it seems just as likely that “1923” will only match Jacob’s grimace with a perpetually grim tone.

With Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren saddling up “1923” takes the star quality to the next level, putting a shiny bow on a pretty basic package.

Stream it, if only for the presence of Ford and Mirren, and the fact that we know that Sheridan’s shows get better as they go along. But the first episode of 1923 does not do the presence of its stars justice, has disjointed stories and a glacial pace.

Maybe the pieces of 1923 will come together eventually and perhaps they’ll even come together quickly — again, I’ve seen only one episode — but in the short run, it’s unlikely that Sheridan’s carefully cultivated core audience will care.

One episode does not a series make, even one of the limited variety. But "1923" tests our faith by presenting subplots running on separate tracks in various places on the planet. ... Ford's stoicism leads the "1923"' mood, a match for the land nature has turned against Montana's cattlemen. But it doesn't make for the most compelling flavor over an hour that struggles to prevent the casual viewer's attention from wandering.

It's a Mills & Boon novel and every tacky pulp fiction novel you've ever read with a glistening Fabio on the cover. It is absolutely a guilty pleasure and there's fun to be had, even with the obvious feminist push and woke Indian empowerment back story that plays right into today's sociopolitical agenda. Mr Harrison Ford is fine but looking his age and Helen Mirren is great, as always. Don't take Taylor Sheridan's tacky writing seriously and you may find yourself enjoying this as a brainless time-waster - 5 stars for the Daniele Steele African Romance subplot Full Review »

Anything enjoyable about 1883 is somehow missing from this show. They lean into the macho man rancher murder porn aspect of the later Yellowstone, forgoing any semblance of a coherent story. It somehow manages to be painfully slow yet filled with senseless danger scenes, seemingly created purely for providing a break in the otherwise continually dull background music. The dialogue makes no sense from one scene to the next - packed full of “tough words” that prove to be the opposite of what the characters or story actually do. Skip this show. Full Review »
