This is a remarkably bad show. Anything enjoyable about 1883 is somehow missing from this show. It somehow manages to be painfully slow yet filled with senseless danger scenes, seemingly created purely for providing a break in the otherwise continually dull background music. The dialogue makes no sense from one scene to the next - packed full of “tough words” that prove to be the opposite of what the characters or story actually do. Skip this show. Expand

1883 was pretty hammy, but 1923 has all the ham with a large helping of extra cheese. It's a Mills & Boon novel and every tacky pulp fiction novel you've ever read with a glistening Fabio on the cover. It is absolutely a guilty pleasure and there's fun to be had, even with the obvious feminist push and woke Indian empowerment back story that plays right into today's sociopolitical agenda.1883 was pretty hammy, but 1923 has all the ham with a large helping of extra cheese. Mr Harrison Ford is fine but looking his age and Helen Mirren is great, as always. Don't take Taylor Sheridan's tacky writing seriously and you may find yourself enjoying this as a brainless time-waster - 5 stars for the Daniele Steele African Romance subplot Expand

Disppointed. Acting not good. Some story lines are repulsive. Hard to take 80 yr old Harrison Ford pretending to be a tough-guy. We'd say this is a "flip a coin but be prepared not to be too entertained."

One episode does not a series make, even one of the limited variety. But "1923" tests our faith by presenting subplots running on separate tracks in various places on the planet. ... Ford's stoicism leads the "1923"' mood, a match for the land nature has turned against Montana's cattlemen. But it doesn't make for the most compelling flavor over an hour that struggles to prevent the casual viewer's attention from wandering.

It is the subplot of 1923 that most interests me. The scenes from a cruel school for indigenous young women run by the sadistic nun Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle) and a strap-happy and possibly pervy priest, Father Renaud (Sebastian Roché), were horrific and brilliantly done. ... Helen Mirren is always hugely watchable and here she also does a decent Irish accent as Cara Dutton. ... Ford is reliably weighty too.

It’s still unclear from the first episode alone how all of the storylines will inevitably converge, or if all of the storylines even work to begin with, but if executed correctly, Sheridan’s prequel can be a worthy star vehicle for its sprawling ensemble.
