Piece by Piece, much like its decorated subject, blows right past refusing to play by the rules and straight up doesn't acknowledge them, and it's all the best for it.
  1. The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is a biopic every bit as off-kilter and bizarre as the protagonist, but despite all of the whimsy and eccentricities, it finds itself missing a spark.
  2. Beneath this movie’s conventions are some interesting gender politics that perhaps could have been made more apparent, but to its credit, are pleasantly subtle.
  3. Despite its undoubted ambition and an excellent central performance from Rami Malek, Buster’s Mal Heart slips into the traps that so often face thrillers of its type.
  4. Atomic Blonde strikes a deafening blow thanks to enjoyable characters, furious fight-play and Charlize Theron’s brand of screen command. She’s always in control, whether toying with feminine wilds or slugging another glass of Stoli on the rocks.
  5. There’s a brooding tonal growth that Pesce is able to establish, as he unravels a film that becomes more horrific with each passing second.

Only M. Night Shyamalan could make an apocalypse film that has audiences rooting for the end of the world, if only to bring the running time of 'Knock at the Cabin' to a merciful end.
  6. The obvious political agenda behind Before the Flood may turn off those who still maintain that climate change is a myth, but the evidence presented in the film should at least cause open-minded viewers to rethink their position on the issue.
  7. Never does Soderbergh’s projection strike me as B-movieness or popcorn entertainment. His mix of arthouse iPhone Hollywood and downplayed character accentuation (by way of misrepresented screen shrinkage) makes for a thriller that fails to spike excitement via a villain who’s always right where he has to be.

Triangle of Sadness is a dark delight that has plenty to say on the state of the world we live in.

Maria is a triumph and the culmination of a trilogy that has become a definitive and essential dissection of the celebrity biopic genre.
  8. Split is never as clever or poignant as it thinks it is, but James McAvoy won't let it be forgotten, either.
  9. Blue My Mind is a provocative Swiss origin story about sex, drugs and trials no person can possibly be prepared for. Whether Mia’s transformation is true or a ruse, the proposition of underwater DNA is only bested by Lisa Brühlmann’s execution.

Hercule Poirot comes out to play again in this horror-leaning murder mystery which, despite looking great, is held back by and underwhelming plot.
  10. It’s a film of maddening contradictions, missed opportunities and half-taken risks, but it’s destined to be one of the year’s most polarizing and talked-about releases regardless.

You can’t help but admire the ambition on display, even if it ultimately falls just a little short.

Thanksgiving is a definitive passion project built on satisfyingly gory visuals, compelling storytelling, and inventive kills that provide a holiday treat for die-hard slasher fans.
  11. Mayhem is a wonderfully violent middle finger to corporate culture, gleeful in its desire to redecorate cubicles with red blood splatters.
  12. How does a movie about the galaxy's most dashingly roguish outlaw end up being the safest Star Wars to date?
  13. The ambition often outweighs the execution, but Totally Killer is still a fun and bloody riff on several different genres at once.
  14. This searing social satire on identity in contemporary culture features a career-best turn from Karen Gillian on powerhouse form.
  15. Junction 48 is about a fusing of cultures, not a conflict between them. There are no easy solutions or simplistic answers, and the film doesn’t try to propose any.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an exercise — or exorcise — in studio IP extension that is so strange and unusual as to be almost review-proof. It's messy and overstuffed, but its quirky charms may well win you over.

While the film never really finds its voice outside of the source material, lacking development and a finer tuning to its new medium, 'Red, White & Royal Blue' might still be the most deliciously fun and excitingly sexy romcom of the year.
  16. Kong: Skull Island is a grand cinematic adventure powered by furry fury, as the horrors of war blend with chest-beating creature confidence.
  17. Terrifier 3 marks a significant evolution in the franchise. Director Damien Leone delivers the most vicious iteration of Art the Clown yet, while also maturing as a filmmaker and providing a solid foundation for future installments.
  18. This is a boxing drama that scrappily battles for its recognition, determined to win you over at any cost.

Everything from the acting to the camerawork and the imposing score makes Fall a memorable mark in transcending fiction, making our greatest fears come to life.
  19. The Void is a portal back to the 80s, hinged on immersive practical effects work that picks up the slack of a slighter story.
  20. Writer and director Quinn Shephard's Not Okay takes thing near to the knuckle, but the biting jet-black comedy never loses sight of its intentions, deftly balancing humor and bile with heart and hard-hitting themes.
